Lakers rout Jazz 120-91 for 7th straight home win

By BETH HARRIS
Posted Jan 26 2011 1:59AM
LOS ANGELES (AP) A day off and two days of practice since their previous game did the aging Los Angeles Lakers some good.

Feeling refreshed, they led all the way in defeating Utah 120-91 Tuesday night behind 21 points in three quarters from Kobe Bryant while handing the Jazz their season-worst fifth straight loss.

"Just worked hard the last couple days and we came out really focused on defense," Bryant said.

Pau Gasol added 20 points, Andrew Bynum had 19 points and 11 rebounds, and Lamar Odom scored 17 off the bench for the Lakers, who won their seventh in a row at home.

"We focus in on defense game-to-game," Odom said. "We focused on doing the small things the right way. It makes all the difference, not just tonight but in practice. That's where you get better and it's starting to show a little."

Deron Williams scored 17 points and C.J. Miles added 14 for Utah, which has lost its last nine against the Lakers at Staples Center. The Jazz went 0-5 on their road trip, including losses to four teams from the East.

"We've lacked chemistry and continuity on offense and on defense and we're not trusting each other," Williams said. "We thought we'd come out and put together a better effort, but we didn't. We couldn't execute and we couldn't get stops against teams with the worst records in the NBA, and coming in to play one of the better teams in the league, it got ugly."

The Lakers had the game in hand after the first quarter, when they shot 72 percent from the floor, hit all three of their 3-pointers and went 8 of 10 on free throws while building a 17-point lead.

"We came out with a lot of energy and I think we caught a team off-guard," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said.

Los Angeles stretched its lead to 28 points in the second quarter, leading 66-38 at the break largely on the efforts of its bench. Odom, Steve Blake, Shannon Brown and Luke Walton played most of the minutes, while Bryant, Gasol, Ron Artest and Derek Fisher got some much-needed rest.

The Jazz shot 14 of 43 in the first half, when the Lakers had more rebounds, assists, steals and fewer turnovers.

"I think we lost our swagger somewhere along the line," Raja Bell said. "You start pressing and start trying to do everything so right that it backfires, and that's a tough way to play."

The Lakers' lead reached 33 points in the third, with Bryant hitting two free throws to make it 88-55 before leaving the game for good. The Jazz got no closer than 27 in the period.

"It was one of those nights we couldn't get anything going," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "They shot the ball well, they passed the ball, they were just much more alive than we were."

Joining Bryant on the bench in the fourth to chat and watch both the game and the crowd were Artest, Bynum and Fisher.

Odom provided the final quarter's highlight, tossing up a high-arcing jumper with a sideways glance before sailing out of bounds and into the crowd while getting fouled. Bryant got on his feet to applaud.

"That's just fun," Odom said. "It was good to get the crowd on their feet."

Brown drew an even louder reaction when he careened in for a fast-break dunk only to miss. No matter, though, the Lakers were up by 38 and he just smiled.

"I found it funny," Bryant said. "He was so high up. When you're on top of a building and you're throwing a pebble down on the street sometimes you miss the target."

Notes: The Lakers notched their NBA-leading eighth wire-to-wire win of the season, one more than last season. ... Bryant needs 13 points to pass Hakeem Olajuwon for eighth on the NBA's career scoring list. His next chance comes at home Friday against Sacramento. ... Los Angeles evened the season series 1-1, having lost at Utah on Nov. 26. ... The Jazz are 3-19 against the Lakers at Staples Center since the building opened in 1999.

Spurs withstand late rally to beat Jazz 112-105

Posted Jan 27 2011 12:51AM
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Manu Ginobili scored 26 points, Tony Parker had 23, and the San Antonio Spurs withstood a late rally to beat the Utah Jazz 112-105 on Wednesday night for their 10th win in 11 games.

Richard Jefferson scored 14 points, while Tim Duncan and Gary Neal each had 13 as the Spurs improved to a franchise-best, 39-7 record after 46 games. Only five teams in NBA history have had better records than the Spurs at this point in the season.

Deron Williams scored 17 of his season-high 39 points in the fourth quarter, but Utah lost its sixth straight. Al Jefferson had 22 points and CJ Miles added 13 for the Jazz, who swept the Spurs in 2009-10 but have lost both meetings this season.

The Jazz have recorded 12 comeback victories this season, overcoming deficits of more than 15 points seven times, but the Spurs made just enough clutch plays down the stretch to quell this rally.

Richard Jefferson made a 3-pointer on an assist from Parker to expand the Spurs' lead to 86-67 late in the third quarter. Most of the Jazz starters left the court, but the Utah reserves sparked an improbable rally over the next five minutes. Seldom-used Jeremy Evans had three high-flying dunks and a free throw during a 17-4 run to bring the Jazz within 90-84 with 9:29 to play.

Ginobili took a lob pass from Duncan and scored to make it 107-97 with 2:00 to play. Williams cut the lead to 109-105 on a driving layup, but he missed two long 3-point attempts in the final 15 seconds.

Utah is mired in its worst stretch of the season, and the average loss has been 15 points. The Jazz reached the bottom against the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday, when they trailed by as many as 38 before falling 120-91.

It had become so bad for the Jazz, that the last time they had outscored an opponent in any one quarter was against New Jersey - four games ago. The Jazz finally broke the string by posting a 27-24 margin against the Spurs in the fourth quarter.

The Spurs scored the first seven points of the game and ran the Jazz ragged off screens. Parker and Ginobili continually got into the lane for floaters or easy set-ups for the Spurs' perimeter shooters. The Spurs shot 51 percent and limited the Jazz to just one second-chance basket.

Playing with a sprained wrist, Williams often bulled his way to the basket in a determined effort to break the Utah skid. He had nine assists and made 16-of-19 shots from inside the arc but missed all five of his 3-point attempts.

The game was extraordinarily physical at times for a regular-season game. Twice in the first half, the action stopped for Raja Bell and Paul Millsap to stop the bleeding on cuts to their thumbs. Williams also went to the locker room between quarters to get his hyperextended right wrist taped.

Notes: The Lakers and the Spurs, Utah's last two opponents, are the only teams that have winning regular-season records against the Jazz all-time. Ginobili and Bell were whistled for a double-technical in the fourth quarter. After two games in a reserve role, Andrei Kirilenko scored 10 points in his return to the starting lineup, while the Spurs tipped off with the same five that have been there every contest this season.

Millsap scores 30 to lift Jazz over Timberwolves

By LYNN DeBRUIN
Posted Jan 29 2011 12:03AM
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Paul Millsap scored 30 points, Earl Watson had a season-high 13 assists in place of injured Deron Williams, and the Utah Jazz beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 108-100 on Friday night to halt a six-game losing streak.

Andrei Kirilenko added a season-high 27 points and had a key steal in the final minute for the Jazz (28-19).

The Timberwolves fell to 10-36 and have lost six straight despite Kevin Love's 32nd consecutive double-double. He had 22 points and 15 rebounds.

The Jazz were without leading scorer Williams for the first time this season because of a hyperextended right wrist.

But Watson, making his first start in a Jazz uniform, brought the same energy he usually provides off the bench. He had four assists in the first five minutes and seven in the first quarter as Utah jumped out to a 32-25 lead.

After Love scored seven points in the third quarter to tie it at 55, Watson ignited an 8-0 Jazz run.

He hit a jumper, Kirilenko and Al Jefferson followed with consecutive dunks and Millsap scored again to make it 74-66.

Reserve guard Ronnie Price gave the Jazz their biggest lead a minute into the fourth quarter when he hit a 3-pointer to make it 90-79. The Timberwolves fought back, with Luke Ridnour's jumper pulling them within 92-91 with 7:39 remaining.

Love grabbed an offensive rebound and cut it to 101-95 with 2:50 remaining, then forced Jefferson to foul out with 1:37 left on a 3-point attempt. Love made all three free throws to cut it to 101-98.

Millsap hit a jump shot with the shot clock winding down for a 105-100 lead with 46 seconds left, then Kirilenko stole it from Michael Beasley to seal the win for Utah.

Wesley Johnson kept the Timberwolves close in the first quarter with eight points off the bench, going 2 of 2 from beyond the arc. He pulled Minnesota within 44-40 with 7:24 left in the second with six points in a 3-minute span, including an alley-oop dunk off a pass from Martell Webster.

The Jazz led 58-55 at halftime thanks to an 18-7 edge in fast-break points. The Timberwolves stayed close by shooting 51 percent, including 5 of 10 from beyond the arc.

It wasn't enough in the end, even with the Jazz missing their leading scorer.

Williams announced after the morning practice that he wouldn't play because of the wrist, which he injured Wednesday in a 39-point effort against San Antonio.

"I feel like I can't hold the ball. If I could play, I could play," Williams said. "I'm not one of them people that sits out for little injuries. My goal every year is to play 82 games, so I'm (ticked) off I can't play. But I can't play."

Williams missed two games last season because of a right wrist injury. An MRI taken Thursday showed no structural damage.

Notes: The Jazz led 58-55 at halftime, the first time they have won a half since Jan. 17 ... Utah's 32 points in the first quarter were the most in an opening quarter since Dec. 1. ... Jazz reserve C Mehmet Okur did not play in the second half because of a lower-back straight. ... Jazz reserve C Kyrylo Fesenko did not play because of a sinus infection.

Warriors snap four-game skid, beat Jazz 96-81

By ANTONIO GONZALEZ
Posted Jan 31 2011 2:31AM
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Monta Ellis sat stoically on the Golden State bench in the fourth quarter, a towel draped over his head and an emotionless expression. Even he looked stunned.

The only thing perhaps more surprising than his performance was the outcome.

Stephen Curry had 27 points, seven assists and six rebounds and the Warriors overcame Ellis' horrendous shooting performance to beat the undermanned Utah Jazz 96-81 on Sunday night to snap a four-game losing streak.

"It was one of those rare nights where everybody had to pick him up," Curry said.

Even rarer was that they did.

Dorell Wright scored 16 points, and Reggie Williams added 15 to help the Warriors build a 19-point lead in the fourth quarter while Ellis was on the bench. Ellis, averaging a team-high 25 points, was held to a season-low two points on 1-for-9 shooting in 31 minutes.

Warriors coach Keith Smart figured it was just "one of those nights" in the grueling NBA season.

"It rained today. Why did it rain? Blame it on the rain. I don't know why," Smart said. "But I think that's why you try to formulate a basketball team so you don't rely on one particular player."

If only the Jazz could do the same without their star.

Al Jefferson had 16 points and 14 rebounds, and Andrei Kirilenko had 14 points and nine rebounds for a Jazz team that has lost six straight road games. Utah never seriously challenged in this one with star point guard Deron Williams out with a hyperextended right wrist and center Mehmet Okur sidelined by a strained back.

"We're going through some tough times," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "We haven't played with a lot of energy and then Deron gets hurt. We get banged up and that's what happens when you get in situations like that. But that's where you see where the fight is in you and see how bad you really like to play."

The Warriors had to find new ways to win.

They did some of their best work early even with Ellis held scoreless for the first half. Wright made a pair of 3-pointers, and Curry followed with another to lead an 11-2 run late in the first quarter.

Golden State pushed its lead to 14 points in the second behind mostly reserves, although it struggled to keep the pace - at first, anyway - without the starters, and the lack of production from Ellis showed.

The Jazz regained their rhythm after the break and got within three points, smothering the Warriors defensively. They kept Ellis without a point until his only basket with 7:39 remaining in the third quarter, and even that took some work: Ellis spun into the lane and made a floating layup over Utah's outstretched front line.

"You could see he wasn't all the way there, whether it was personal or whatever it was. I'm not taking credit for that," Utah guard Raja Bell said.

The Warriors managed just fine without him.

They slowly went ahead 85-67 in the fourth quarter against team that was simply exhausted playing short-handed. It was a rare night when Ellis had such low output and the Warriors still won.

The All-Star hopeful's previous low this season was five points in a 117-89 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Nov. 21 when he hardly even played in the second half because it was such a blowout. The last time Ellis scored only two points came against Phoenix on Feb. 4, 2009.

"You have to win a lot of different ways if you want to be successful," Curry said. "Every night's not going to be pretty. Even if everybody is not on their game, you have to find ways to win."

NOTES: The Warriors improved to 2-1 against the Jazz this season. The home team has won each game. They wrap up their season series Feb. 16 in Utah. ... Jazz reserve C Kyrylo Fesenko played the final 8 minutes after missing the previous game because of a sinus infection.
