Stocks may take a hit

By Goh Thean Eu
Published: 2008/03/10

MALAYSIAN shares are due to fall today after a surprise election result while Wall Street's drop on Friday may rattle investors further, analysts said.

Malaysia's ruling coalition Barisan Nasional won the recent election by a simple majority. Analysts had widely expected it to win by a two-thirds majority.

"The stock market depends and relies on predictability and continuality. Any surprises on the downside are always not good for the market," MIMB Investment Bank research head Pong Teng Siew said when contacted yesterday.

Investors are already nervous as the market's benchmark has fallen 8.5 per cent over the past one month. Foreign investors have led the selling after research houses like CLSA cut its recommendation on Malaysian stocks, citing slower consumer spending.

However, there are also those who think that any selldown would be cushioned by the fact that most foreign funds trimmed their holdings recently.

OSK Research Sdn Bhd head Kenny Yee advised investors holding fundamentally good stocks to stay calm.

"There will be some knee-jerk reactions on Monday. I don't think investors should jump on the bandwagon ... investors shouldn't do anything drastic, as it will only make things worse," he said.

US stocks closed lower on Friday and this will further weigh on investors.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed 1.2 per cent to below 12,000 points, the first time in two months, after US Labour Department announced lower-than-expected job numbers.

It said on Friday that 63,000 non-farm jobs were cut in February, a huge contrast as economists had forecast for 25,000 new jobs.

"I think those who still thinks that the US is 'potentially' going into recession is living in denial ... the US is already in, if not heading, into recession," said an analyst.

Analysts expect stocks of firms with projects in Penang to be most affected. The opposition political parties gained control of five states, including Penang, in the polls.

Foreign investors unfazed by election results

By Chong Pooi Koon and Goh Thean Eu
Published: 2008/03/10

FOREIGN investors are not too worried over the general election results.

Most investors are adopting a wait-and-see stance after the weekend’s surprise polls results.

They hope the four states that are soon to see a change of guards will have a smooth transition of power.

Aberdeen Asset Management Sdn Bhd, which has invested some RM7.1 billion in Malaysia, is unfazed and sees the political development as positive.

“Having a larger minority voice is extremely positive. A country works better when there are checks and balances,” managing director Gerald Ambrose said.

Barisan Nasional won the election by only a simple majority, although analysts had widely expected it to win by a two-thirds majority.

Aberdeen’s investment objectives in Malaysia were unchanged, he added.

“It (the election results) doesn’t really matter and will not make any difference to our long-term investment objectives.

” President of Taipei Investors Association in Malaysia Datuk Dr Ting Chung Cheng, hoped both the state and federal governments would ensure that the interests of the country would always come first.

“They have towork closely,” he said.

Dr Ting said he was not worried as the government was open and sensible.

“Those in power will not do anything that will harm the country.

“If anything, the polls show that Malaysians can vote out the government if they don’t like it. I think this is a very positive development for the nation.” Datuk Wong Siew Hai, the chair of Malaysia American Electronics Industry, wants to see Malaysia continue with its pro-business policy.

“As foreign investors, we definitely want to see political stability, peace and the smooth transfer of power,” he said.

All eyes are on how the opposition will deliver on their promises after they successfully denied the ruling BN government its two-third majority in parliament and won control in five states.

He also does not expect foreigners to hold back investment here.

“We are not too worried because there is no sign of unrest.”
