Cut loss?

Malaysia fights to clear the air over latex gloves

Published: 2008/01/31

WASHINGTON: Malaysian latex glove makers are fighting bad publicity emerging from the US medical community, particularly the Johns Hopkins Hospital, which recently announced that it was banning the use of latex gloves and other latex medical products on its premises.

The hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, has opted to become "latex-safe" by prohibiting the use of all latex gloves and almost all medical latex products to prevent rare but severe allergic reactions, called anaphylaxis, that could include wheezing, rapid heartbeat and a sudden drop in blood pressure.

While such reactions could be fatal, Johns Hopkins anaesthesiologist Dr Robert Brown - who also chairs its latex task force - conceded that he knew of no fatalities at the hospital.

"We do care about our users and their safety is very important to us. We're not just selling gloves, but we're concerned that the decision of Johns Hopkins to eliminate latex gloves from its hospital is based on outdated data," said Dr Esah Yip, director of the Malaysian Rubber Export Promotion Council (MREPC) here.

She described Johns Hopkins' move as an "overreaction" and "misleading".

Yip has written to the hospital about the new class of safer latex gloves that has seen a decline in incidences of latex sensitisation and allergic reactions.

She has also informed the US media and travels around the country to talk about Malaysia's superior latex gloves.

Yip said that new technology adopted by Malaysian manufacturers since the late 1990s had drastically reduced the presence of residual proteins in latex gloves to less than 50 micrograms per decimeter.

The use of such gloves has been shown by a number of independent hospital studies in the US, Canada and Europe to not only vastly reduce sensitisation and allergic reactions, but, more importantly, that latex-allergic individuals can work alongside their colleagues using these improved latex gloves without suffering any ill effects.

A recent study funded by the US Centers for Disease Control and the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health found that latex gloves' leakage rate, at 5.6 per cent, was much lower than that of surgical gloves made of nitrides (9.3 per cent) or polychloroprene/neoprene (7.4 per cent).

"Johns Hopkins' decision seems to be out of step with the rest of the country and is based on old data that no longer applies, rather than on data from the new class of low-protein latex gloves available today," said Yip.

"Allergy issues should be overcome, not by banning latex gloves but by adopting the policy of using only low-protein, low-powder, or powder-free latex gloves, while allergic individuals should use quality non-latex gloves, as has already been done in other hospitals in the US, Germany and Finland," she added.

Yip said there was no evidence that anaphylactic shock had ever occurred when the low-protein, low- or powder-free latex gloves had been used.

She also pointed out that Mayo Clinic, a leading US medical institution which recently conducted a study, had found that the use of low-protein latex gloves resulted in savings of US$200,000 (about RM648,000) a year.

More than 3,300 physicians, scientists and researchers as well as 46,000 allied health staff work at Mayo Clinic, which also has facilities in Rochester (Minnesota), Jacksonville (Florida) and Scottsdale/Phoenix (Arizona).

Collectively, the three locations treat more than half a million people each year.

Yip said Johns Hopkins' decision to eliminate latex gloves from its hospital could unnecessarily increase its glove cost by 50 per cent.

"Johns Hopkins is spending precious healthcare dollars to fix something that isn't broken, and hasn't been broken since new manufacturing techniques in the late 1990s and early 2000s revolutionised the way latex gloves is made," she said.

While US imports of latex gloves grow steadily every year, challenges lie ahead for the MREPC as the Harbor Hospital in Baltimore and the Shriners Hospital for Children in Sacramento, California, opt to go latex-free.

In 2006, the US imported 18.4 billion pairs of rubber gloves worth US$1.2 billion (RM3.9 billion). Out of this, 9.2 billion pairs worth about US$0.6 billion (RM1.9 billion) were from Malaysia.

In 2004, the US imported 17.6 billion pairs of gloves worth US$1.03 billion (RM3.3 billion), with 8.6 billion pairs worth about US$0.5 billion (RM1.6 billion) coming from Malaysia, according to the Global Trade Atlas. - Bernama

I read below news report from Business Times that Johns Hopkins Hospital has banned  the use of latex gloves and other latex medical products on its premises.Johns Hopkins Hospital is widely regarded as one of the world's greatest hospitals, and it has topped U.S. News and World Report's ranking of American hospitals for 17 consecutive years, so Johns Hopkins Hospital's banning of latex gloves really is a bad news for latext glove manufacturer, especially Top Glove.

What actions that Top Glove have taken to counter reactive these development?

Top Glove
Thanks for highlighting the issue.

Following are our comments:
a) The news is nothing new as the US medical industry has raised the protein allergy issue many years ago. This is aggravated by those competitors in US that ONLY selling NON latex glove. That is why MREPC has appointed Dr Yip in the States to promote and inform the right thing about latex gloves.

b) If it is true, FDA in US will be the first to ban the usage of latex glove in all the US hospitals. As Ms Yip mentioned, the protein level has been reduced significantly.

c) There is environment issue of using nitrile glove as well since it is not bio degradable, unlike latex glove

d) As for TG, we are producing both type of glove, latex and nitrile glove. As an OEM manufacturer, we will produce based on customers need. If there are more demand for nitrile glove, TG will then produce more of it.

e) The production lines in Malaysia can cater for both type of glove, ie interchangeable. So there is no need of additional capital expenditure

f) US is only 30% of our total sales and TG is actively focusing on other developing countries, such as Latin America, Asian and African countries which growth rate is much higher.

Best regards
