Ritek to start mass producing BD-RE discs

San Francisco (IDGNS) - Taiwanese disc maker Ritek plans to start mass producing BD-RE (Blu-Ray Disc Rewritable) discs as well as HD DVD-RE (high definition) discs in the third quarter of this year, a small but important step to helping reduce the cost of such discs for users.

A handful of Taiwanese companies dominate the disc mass production business, including Ritek and rival CMC Magnetics. These companies license disc technology from developers and then spin out as many of the discs as they can in a bid to drive down the cost of each disc and earn as much revenue as possible.

Initially, however, BD-RE and HD DVD-RE discs will still be pricey. The average cost per disc will remain around $10 in retail outlets, despite production costs of around $5 per disc, said Eric Ai, a Ritek representative. Prices won't likely come down until other mass disc producers in Taiwan win accreditation to make the discs, and ramp up volumes.

Each single-layer BD-RE disc has a capacity of 25GB, enough to hold three hours of terrestrial digital high-definition TV, or six hours of standard TV. HD DVD-RE discs can hold around 20GB of data, while DVD discs hold 4.7GB.

Taiwan market: Lesser-known brands supplying DVD+R/-R discs with 30-50% defect rates

In the Taiwan retail market, small brands or brands without a reputation have recently provided a large volume of DVD+R/-R discs of which purchasers have found as many as 30-50% failed in performance. Such defect rates are historically very exceptional, according to Taiwan retail channels.

Currently, DVD+R/-R discs supplied by international brands, including Philips, Sony and TDK, sell at NT$8-12 (US$0.24-0.36) per disc while small or little-known brands charge only NT$6-7 for a disc, the sources indicated.

Among Taiwan-based makers, DVD+R/-R discs produced by CMC Magnetics, Ritek and Prodisc Technology have the lowest average defect rates, the sources pointed out. In contrast, such discs imported from China-based makers are characterized by relatively high defect rates, the sources noted. However, even for the same makers, defect rates may vary from one shipment to another, the sources said.

High defect rates are due to makers, trying to cope with falling prices of DVD+R/-R discs, using second-grade optical polycarbonate, a basic material of optical discs, and self-developed dyes to minimize production costs. Also there are problems in controlling quality during the manufacturing process, the sources explained.

The best way for consumers to avoid high defect rates (which therefore have to be returned in many cases) is to choose leading brands, the sources suggested.

无论如何，历史已经证明megan的股价对好消息是没反应的，对坏消息却非常敏感..

这个就好玩了啦！哈哈！

不过事情没有那么直接。以Megan目前的情况看来，Megan对贷款这一方面，都比较小心。目前只是把问题放在厂家那一方面，所以短期不会影响到Borrowings Repayment这一块。据我所知，如果发生这样的问题，银行会委任独立重组专家，（PWC，AIGB, MIMB，CIMB，E&Y等等）来插手。Production立刻会减少，Focus全力会放在Trade Receivables和客户那一块，高薪的Executive薪水会消减，直到公司有Cash Provision来换银行将来某个限期的债务（可能几个月，可能半年不定）。然后公司还必须额外承担这Restructuring的费用。到时候，可能先来个PN17，搞不好后来一个PN4也不一定。。。

钱是小事，被厂家Blacklist和与客户的感情弄坏了才是大事。

如果Restructuring不行，那么就好玩了。现在才是白武士商场的时候。因为那时候才是公司，还是银行都没有Bargaining Power的天赐时机。

起码，我会打这样的战！

如果银行接手：
1。是好帐，就公司好
2。是有问题的坏帐，就可以告前任ceo
3。是坏帐，也伤不了megan全部nta。
4。新的大股东要做megan 的t&r全部变坏就不能了。
