It's undoubtedly true that confidence is an integral part of mastering english. Well mere confidence does not help though. My worst in on the listening part...I don't understand why but I cant ma ...
I was chinese educated and most of my friends are chinese so I rarely have a chance to speak in eng.Consequently, I was not used to speak in eng and worry that people will laught at my broken eng.Actually, I am quite ok in writing because I can think twice before I write but when it comes to speaking, I don't have time to think.... |

i hope that you do feel proud to be able to master your mother tongue, hakka. i think before anyone learning a second language, they should learn their mother tongue first. for me it's like our soul. just have a look at those 'banana',they're very far away from their identity as chinese. it might sound fancy to be called as the 'new generation',but the fact is that they do not know who they are. it's the same for any other races, not only applied to chinese.
well,as you can see,i was borned (and grown up) in kuala terengganu. almost no english is spoken there. there's no chance for one to speak english there except to the teachers, which is only restricted to english teachers. 100% 'Banana' is very rare. Even among chinese, malay is the commonest language after chinese (including dialects). 'native chinese'(土生华人) usually speaks perfect malay with Terengganu Hokkien (mix malay + hokkien).i even had very little exposure to manglish when i was in KT. and i actually started to pick up my spoken english after SPM.
ok lah, i think i've written too much nonsence here. but i like culture stuff...erm... i hope i'm not causing you guys to yawn.. |

^ It was really meaningful.. Not as pointless as mine..XD
And yeah, my father told me the exact same thing as you did as well.. Hakka is our soul, it won't be replaced by any other languages..
Plus, we can all learn mandarin, english, malay and so to other languages at school.. Why don't we just learn our mother tongue first then followed by the others?? For example my cousins, they call themselves "客家人" but they don't even speak Hakka, sounds ridiculous right??
I grown up in Kedah, the youngest baby in my family and nobody in my family speaks english well, except for my father and my sister..
I started learning English seriously since Form 3 I guess.. I've forgot about the main reason but probably after I knew how to reply on a forum~~XD
But still, I have to say that I'm really proud to be a Hakka!!
Since we don't have a main topic here, let's talk about your christian name(english name).. First of all, let me clear this.. I'm not a christian, but as you all can see in my username, I named myself Oliver..
What about yours?? |

i dont wanna have an english name..cos i think my name is a gift and it's very meaningful.. so i wont name myself another name..
when i introduce myself to chinese speaking ppl i'll tell them my name in chinese..others i'll introduce myself as 'fong',otherwise they gonna have difficulties to memorise my name..'fong'is my actual given name..ching is just my generation name..(further reading here http://chinese.cari.com.my/myforum/viewthread.php?tid=588262&extra=page%3D1) |

Mind if i join? Just to share...
I came from chinese education background as well
Just started to touch up my english these few years back. Speaking is not a problem but writing is a trouble for me. Done a lot of readings and listening but i think the best way to improve my writing is through the real situation. Please correct my grammar if anyone of you found the mistakes.
Yeah, everyone is lack of confidence. So do I, since my first day in my college, where my college is famous with it's english education background, i felt so embarrased with my english level. People around are speaking english, but i'm still shy and i couldn't communicate with them. Since that ever, I started to read more book (luckily, i love books.) I watched dramas, movies...listen to radio..all that makes my english improved within a short period.
Not to say that my english is superb now, but i started to fall in love with this language, without forgetting my mother tougue - chinese. Lots of chinese nowadays showing off their fluent english but forgotten their mother tongue. What a shame actually. I felt so lucky that i know both language.
I dont have fancy english name, so i'm using my name as my IC shown, well..part of it. ^^
Pouring too much water here..
Let's roll this thread! |

Mastering a second language is not that hard. First of all, you should have been excellent at your mother tongue.
My siblings can speak in Cantonese, but they can't understand any Chinese words because they were educated in national schools. I still can't understand why my parents sent me to a Chinese primary school, as I see it, they are not likely to care about the so-called 'culture and heritage'.
I am sorry to say that I don't speak Mandarin to strangers. If you do know me, be informed. I am good at Mandarin, both written and spoken, but I decided not to sit for Chinese examinations after PMR.
I was not able to speak English many years ago, but when you hear me speaking English now, you would think if I am a native speaker of English. I could master a language easily because I am talented in language. And as I said before, excellent command of mother tongue. If you can't even master your mother tongue, don't think about other languages! |

Although I don't really like my chinese name but don't get me wrong, I'm still proud to be a chinese!!
I'm facing SPM right now, but I don't feel the intensity actually.. I don't think I'm gonna past my Malay, although I did for my PMR but this time I really don't.. |

Ya most of our chances to practice the speaking of english are limited by the environment around us. And this normally ends when we further our tertiary education in some colleges or universities where we can find groups that speak only cantonese, or mandarin or english ...And we make our choice here, to face the challenge, also to join our long-saught training ground.
I wasn't able to communicate with english fluently, not even able to convey anything by speaking, though I get good enlish result in SPM and 1119. For about 2 years I was ...like somewhat retarded in speaking english in my class -.- Well, my writing somehow could amaze them though -- it seems most people conversant in english do not really master writing english at that stage.
*I was not used to speak in eng>>>--->>>I was not used to SPEAKING (in) english
not very sure if it's really correct though, someone correct it pls =)
Try,,,,,,,,,,,,to think twice TOO before you speak then^^ though it might be much tougher than in writing. |

I love mandarin very much and when I was exposed to the beauty of english by a good teacher, I start to fall in love with this language as well, but only could practice reading and writing, while there is rarely a place for me to polish up my speaking and listening skills.
I know =) In the place you came from, it is not within the english territory. My friend told me that you dont have to use english to live better there... in business, in daily lives...
*the commonest language 〉〉〉---〉〉〉the most common ?
U are not speaking nonsense here.Ilove your sharing =)
I do love culture stuff. You are not causing me to yawn. U make me start to talk a lot too><

I sorta insist on no-christian-name at start...Now I dont really mind though but still I dont have one, since I could introduce myself as Kai which english users could call as 'Kyle'. And the first time I see Kyle this name is used on a cute cartoon character... so I pretty love this name since then

I could see and feel that your english is much better than me but your may not focus too much in gramma, contrary to what I was... I was busy in grammar for exam's sake and put less concetration on the real english. Im pretty regret(ted? or no need) now.
*famous with it's english education background---> ITS english education(al?) background ( I do doubt if educatinoal is wrong or not, Im just easily confused with these.)
*everyone is lack of confidence---> everyone lacks -or everyone is lacking( both correct or which 1 is more suitable? anyone? cuz im not sure too)
