Resting hour is definitely correct.
When a present participle is used as an adjective,it means when you use the hour, you are resting.
For instance,washing machine,chopping board.
When you use the machine,it is washing. When you use the board, you are chopping.
But when a past participle is used as an adj,it means it has been done to the noun itself.
Eg,broken windows,devastated widow,frustrated kid |

1. have always been advising
2. to learn
3. to come
???
1.Present perfect and present perfect continuous can be used in this case. They carry the same meaning but the degree of emphasis is different.
He has always advised me to learn english.( His friends' advice has cause him to start taking care of his english)
He has been advising me to learn english.( (1)It is still in progress. (2)Use to emphasis the fact that his friends have advised him very often recently or his friends has just stopped advising him.)
2.To listen to english songs and (to)learn together with them.
Eg,I was writing and (was) playing games at the same time.
Those bracketed words can be omitted.
3.Typing error.(I happen to come across this thread.)

Thanks, but i'm not really good and there are still many words remaining unknown to me .
Actually I have done more than 200 pages(given by language centre) of vocabulary exercise but i don't manage to remember all the words i have learned.
Getting a good thesaurus has really helped me in knowing more words. However, you must do reading if you want to widen your range of vocabulary.
If you don't have one,i would recommend you to buy a thesaurus that is entitled "Family Words Finder" published by Reader's Digest. |

which language centre do you go to?how frequent is the class?do you you according to your level tested?would you mine to share with us? cos i think it's pretty good..
i know it's a bit off topic, but may i ask your opinion on plain english? fancy/colourful english might be great to read and it's very useful to further improve our english (for the write/speaker as well as for readers/listeners).
but i think it's not the case in conversation as the listener might not get what you are trying to convey. what do you think?just out of curiousity..

Yes,i do support using plain english instead of pretentious english but it really depends on who are you talking to and where are you talking.
For educated people, use more sophisticated words would be better,i presume.
I always use plain english in informal conversation.
I have stopped attending english courses. If i were to continue,i would be sitting for CPE on this December.I stop going because i might go to study overseas. But if i believe i will take CPE one day,Cambridge english exams are exciting and challenging.
I have been attending 2 english courses since May of 2006.I still remembered that i went there in the middle of the 1-year course which mean i missed 5 months lessons there.
The language centre i have gone to is called BELL(Benny English Language Laboratory). It is a cambridge-authorized centre, providing people with examinations prepared by Cambridge Esol.
There is only a lesson once a week (for each courses). The duration for each lessons is 2 hours, but normally the teacher there will teach extra because he loves teaching english and helping Malaysian.
There is no any pre-test given when you want to enrol for courses there. So you have got to make sure that you will understand what he speaks. You know your level of english, don't you?
There are courses for KET,PET,FCE,CAE and CPE.
F1,2 F3 F4 F5 F6
F-form
Normally he will arrange those students who have been studying there since they were small for the courses i stated above.
But there are adults studying there too.If you are only interested in taking the exams, attending lessons is not necessary anymore,it is up to you.
The tutors there are excellent, especially the principal(Mr Benny),whom i perceive to be the most circumspect teacher in Malaysia and the best lecturer I have seen. You will have a great advantage being taught by him,he is not only your teacher, but also a cambridge examiner(He brings cambridge to Malaysia in 1962).Moreover,he is also a very experienced teacher,he has been teaching english since 1962.Having been taught by him,i found him always motivate all of the students in every lessons.
The tuition fees there are a lot cheaper compared to British Council.
He only charges rm180 for CPE course and rm150 for CAE course. For other courses, they are relatively cheaper.
You have to pay each months. |

Bell is located at Farlim in Penang.
I will tell you its phone number and address later if you are interested.
If you want to learn english for education or career purposes,i would suggest you to take exams like CAE and CPE.
CAE is generally recognized by all the Universities in the world. But CPE which is harder is more widely recognized.
These exams do not only test your proficiency of english, but also skills. For instance, speaking, writing, listening and reading.
You should refer to this website. http://www.cambridgeesol.org/
A good website that provides you with information about cambridge exams and also recommendation of some books.
There is a forum for students too,you may ask for help there.
www.flo-joe.com
Always give it a second thought before writing.

Sorry, but I have tried my best. ( if you are more concerned with the result.)
Sorry, but I have been trying my best. ( If you are more concerned with the progress and not the result.) |
