Awwwl,as for me, I started mastering my writing part( though it is still not impressive) and found myself stuck at both speaking and even LISTENING ==..
When I got the environment to speal english, I gradually grasped the way of speaking. Rather comforting, my speaking and my writing are a little bit outstanding among my friends. Somehow it's very tough to really get what people are talking about...It should be quite ok with malaysian english but when it comes to those foreign english,,, be it movies or radio broadcast or even cartoon... This struck my confidence badly. I have strived for many years and well, I really worry where is my listening skill going in years to come...=(
One of my friend whose english is the best among us told me that listening and speaking come way more important than writing when you come to the society. Bad for me to know, since I hardly know how to counter this problem of mine, by all means that I ever know of.

Communication skills nowadays are very important.
Communication involves 2 skills-speaking and listening, you listen to the speaker, you understand and you respond to them.
Interview requires you to be proficient in communication skills.Interview nowadays is two way traffic. The conventional one was that the interviewer would ask you question and you would only need to answer him by short sentence. The modern interview is completely transformed, you must ask the interviewer question and answer his question too.
I find that many people who can write well are atrocious in their listening and speaking skills.Listening is the hardest i would say because it encompasses all the accent in the world.
When we listen to native accent,we normally have the background of something spoken unconsciously. However, when you listen to other accents, you will have difficulty knowing what they are talking about.Incidentally, you don't have to understand all the words they utter, you need to identify the keywords and thus having known what they are talking about.
Sadly, the latter is one of the hardest too.In our daily life, you often find that people at the top are good at speaking as speaking helps them to be promoted. The biggest barrier that stops you from speaking well is confidence. If you are too shy,not having enough confident, you will never speak well.Good speaking skill requires boldness, high confident level, grammatical knowledge, fluency without stoppages and vocabulary too.
If you want to speak well, you must first break the barrier of shyness. If you can beat it,you are not far from conquering it.
If you want to improve your listening skill, you will have to listen to british accent, perhaps the most challenging accent to be heard. If you find any problem hearing to them,i recommend you to listen to CNN(american accent),it would be much easier.
What for learning all this?
For the sake of university education and working.
In university,we will listen to our lecturer and jot down the main point of what he lectures.
then,we will go to tutorial room and this is the place which required us to do speaking skill. We wil ask the tutor who is holding a master degree about things we just learnt and do presentation there,as well as discussion.

If you have astro,it would be better.
If you are poor in listening and find it very difficult to comprehend caucasians' spoken english especially british and american, you will listen to the chinese accent(CCTV),perhaps the easiest one to be heard.
After you don't have problem listening to chinese accent, you will now listen to CNN broadcasting channel. This is the 2nd hardest to british accent.
Finally, the hardest one should be the british accent. You will now listen to bbc channel.
BBC and CNN's radio channel can be found on the net, google search it,if you can't find them, tell me. |

Tip for listening.
-In many listening situations, either in your own language or in a foreign language,it is necessary to be able to recognise and sequence the main ideas and to be able to follow the thread of what is being said.Once again, you do not have to understand every word. You should concentrate on recognising key words;these are words that the speaker considers to be important and which,in English, are usually stressed.
-We often listen in order to retrieve specific pieces of information which are particularly relevant to us.In this respect, listening is a process of selection in which it is not necessary to understand every word. You should listen for words or expressions which are related to the information you are interested in and concentrate on that particular part of the speech, interview, announcement, etc. Here again, recognition of key words can help you listen for the important points without worrying about understanding every word.
-When we listen to our own language,we register and interpret many details about the situation and the speakers involve without being consciously aware of what we are doing. However, when we listen to a foreign language,we may have difficulty possessing many of the background details, such as accent, tone, register, function and attitude of the speakers. |

PART 1
Subject Object
He Him
She Her
It It
You You
We Us
They Them
I give her my money.
Give is a verb.
Subject must be appeared before a verb and object must be appeared only after a verb.
Subject takes verb and object does not take verb.
E.G,I convince him to put aside everything.
He told me not to be so stubborn.
He she it and so on are all pronouns.
Prefix pro means for.
Pronoun means for the noun-uncle tan, jason khoo, felicia ooi and so on.
RULE
1)OBJECT CANNOT TAKE VERB.
2)SUBJECT TAKES VERB.
PART 2
Infinitive
He comes here to study.
He came here to study.
He has come here to study.
He is coming here to study.
The red indicate verb.
The blue indicate infinitive.
Verb has got tense.Tense means time.
Verb expresses time.
However, infinitive is not influenced by time.
In any tenses,it is applicable,it has got no tense.
Therefore, infinitive must be a base form.
Infinitive= to + base form.
The only thing to do now is to pick up the vase and to tell mother about it.
In this sentence, there is one verb with three infinitives.
However,it can be simplified to
(to) (to)
The only thing to do now is ^pick up the vase and ^tell mother about it.(Correct)
Are pick and tell infinitive?
Yes they are,but they are infinitive without to,it is called bare infinitive.
In bare infinitive, the (to) is understood, therefore no need to put. |

PART 3
I saw the man.He crossed the road.(both sentences are simple past.)
(it means when u saw the man,he had already crossed the road.)
When we combine
(to)
I saw the man ^cross the road.
RULE
1)SUBJECT TAKES VERB.
2)OBJECT CANNOT TAKE VERB
According to the 2nd rule, object cannot take verb.
I saw the man cross the road.
The man is an object.
However, the "cross" is not a verb,it is a bare infinitive.
The to can be removed as it is understood.
PART 4
I saw the man.He was crossing the road.(the 2nd sentence is past continuous.)
(it means when u saw the man,he was crossing the road.)
When we combine,
I saw the man crossing the road.
Are you confused with the crossing?
Is it a present participle or gerund?
(was)
I saw the man ^crossing the road.
See the logic?
As object cannot take verb, putting was in front present participle is wrong already.
Therefore, when (was) is understood, you must remove it.
Crossing here acts as a present participle, not gerund.
RULE
1)OBJECT CANNOT TAKE VERB.
2)OBJECT CAN ONLY TAKE BARE INFINITIVE TO SHOW PAST SIMPLE.
3)OBJECT CAN ONLY TAKE PRESENT PARTICIPLE TO SHOW PAST CONTINUOUS.
PART 5
What is the difference between gerund and present participle.
Although they are verb+ing, they are not the same.
Gerund is a noun formed from a verb,it is also called verbal noun.
Present participle is not a noun,it is usually used with is/am/are to show present continuous,was/were to show past continuous and also adjective.
GERUND
(n)
I love cakes.
I love pizza.
I love the girl.
Therefore,(Verb + ing here is used as gerund.)
(n)
I love swimming.
I love cooking.
I love arguing.
PRESENT PARTICIPLE
I am cooking .
He is dancing in the room.
She is reading novel.
They are grumbling.
Verb + ing here is present participle.
Present continuous=is/am/are + present participle
In addition, present participle can also be used adjective.
The frying pan.(when you used the pan,you is frying.)
The chopping board.(when you use the board, you are chopping.)
The dazzling perfomance.(when you see the perfomance,it is dazzling.)
The boiling water.(When you see the water,it is boiling.)
The crying girl.(when you see the girl, she is crying.)
Past participle can be used as an adjective too.
The broken glasses.(When you see the glasses, they are broken.)
The depressed guy.(When you see the guy,he is depressed.
The devastated town.(When you go to the town,it is devastated.)
So now you know when verb+ing takes as a gerund or present participle?
ONE MORE THING,ALL THESE METHODS OF COMBINING SENTENCES CAN BE APPLIED TO PRESENT TENSE TOO.
THESE METHODS ARE VERY ESSENTIAL IN WRITING.
I am sorry if my explanation is not explicit enough,im just a form 5 student, forgive me.
If my help is further required,i would be glad to oblige you.

Darksider,

Can anyone clarify to me how to use"...has had..." I felt rather confused when saw this...
Present tense Past tense Past participle Present participle
has had had having
have had had having
is was been being
are were been being
am was been being
hang hung hung hanging
hang hanged hanged hanging
Present perfect- has/have + past participle.
Function-to show completed action.
eg.I have taken breakfast.
I have gone to the market.
I have had enough.(past participle for has/have is had)
He has had enough.
Past perfect-had+past participle
Function-To show completed action before a particular time in the past.
eg.After i had done my assignment,i slept.
I had approached the man before i came to you.
I had seen the girl before i actually reached the spot.
I had had my breakfast before i went to school.
Is I had had correct?
Yes,base on the formula of past participle(had+ past participle),it is right to write had had since had is a past participle.
"I have had enough."
it means you cannot tolerate anymore. |
