A bank guard wished his colleagues a merry Christmas before going into a toilet and shooting himself in the head, an inquest into his death heard yesterday.
Cisco Certis auxiliary police officer Thirunavukarasu Sandanasamy, 25, had just finished work at about 5pm on Dec 22, 2011, when the tragedy happened in VivoCity shopping centre in HarbourFront Walk.
A cleaner who went into the toilet about 40 minutes later saw red stains on the floor. When he bent down to wipe them away, he saw a revolver lying in the cubicle and a hand dangling near it.
Police were called in and found Mr Thirunavukarasu dead. His body was on the toilet seat in the locked cubicle, with his back against the wall.
Police found no evidence of a struggle or signs that someone had climbed in or out of the cubicle. All the evidence, such as gunpowder burns, showed that Mr Thirunavukarasu had shot himself, testified investigating officer Tan Lian Heng yesterday.
Investigations also revealed that the guard, who came here in 2008 from Malaysia, had told a female colleague in April 2011 that he was being disturbed by visions of a snake-like form and could not have a relationship with a woman.
In his findings, State Coroner Imran Abdul Hamid said he agreed with police that the bank guard had "deliberately shot himself". The coroner also noted that Mr Thirunavukarasu was unhappy working as a bank guard. There was no suicide note and he did not express any intention to kill himself, the court heard.
Mr Thirunavukarasu's parents came from Penang for the inquiry.
The inquiry also heard that Certis Cisco had introduced new safeguards, such as disarming auxiliary officers in financial difficulties or facing criminal charges until given the all-clear by psychiatrists.
Certis Cisco told The Straits Times that it had provided counselling and financial assistance to Mr Thirunavukarasu's family.
