Rumours that the probe may involve the police or the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission are 'not true', says an independent non-executive director

The ongoing internal probe at Alliance Financial Group Bhd's (AFG) (2488) banking unit is not related to fraud and will not have a material impact on the bank's earnings or balance sheet, a board member said.

Rumours that the probe may involve the police or the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission are "not true", independent non-executive director Tee Kim Chan said at a briefing for analysts and fund managers yesterday.

He also denied that it had anything to do with a particular public-listed company or a multi-storey building.

Tee, however, would not say what the probe was about, except that it would take about two to three weeks to complete, analysts who attended the briefing told Business Times.
Tee was also not able to say when the bank's chief executive officer, Datuk Bridget Lai, would be back from her annual leave.

Lai voluntarily took leave while the bank carried out the probe, he said.

Tee moved to assure the 35-odd analysts who came for the briefing that it was business as usual at Alliance Bank Malaysia Bhd and that regulators were being kept informed of developments.

Some of the analysts, however, left the meeting dissatisfied that the bank did not provide more information on the probe or on when Lai would be back.

"It's hard for investors not to jump to conclusions when not enough answers are being provided. There's still no assurance that Lai will come back to the bank," said one, who declined to be named.

As it stands, rumours are rife that Lai may join a rival bank.

At least two foreign research houses, Credit Suisse and UBS, had downgraded AFG's stock before the briefing. UBS cut its recommendation to "neutral" from "buy", with a target of RM2.70.

AFG's shares fell by 1 sen to RM2.42 yesterday, off an intra-day low of RM2.29. Some 65.3 million shares changed hands, double the previous day's volume, making it the day's most actively traded counter.

Bridget Lai said to be head-hunted

PETALING JAYA: Alliance Bank group CEO Datuk Bridget Lai (pic) is believed to be head-hunted for top positions in banking and finance.

The offers are said to have emerged since last year but Lai’s contract with Alliance had just been approved by Bank Negara for renewal in September; hence, she has not accepted any offer.

When contacted, Lai declined to comment.

Alliance Financial Group Bhd group chief executive officer Datuk Bridget Lai. Industry players said they were not surprised that Lai would be approached by headhunters as the shortage of seasoned bankers in Asia makes someone like her “very bankable.’’

Her 30 years of experience, mostly with Standard Chartered Bank before she took up her current post in 2005, has given her a strong foundation especially in consumer banking which is her forte.

Just two days ago, Lai refuted reports that she had resigned amid a spate of rumours that a senior official of Alliance Bank, who was purportedly on forced leave along with a few others, had offered to resign.

Bloomberg yesterday reported that Alliance Bank also issued a statement that Lai had not resigned and that it conducted investigations as part of its due diligence on corporate governance and board oversight.

Alliance Financial Group Bhd, whose biggest shareholder is Temasek Holdings Pte Ltd, said its banking unit is being helmed by head of corporate banking Choo Joon Keong during the absence of its top two executives.

Lai and chief operating officer Shim Kon Teck were on annual leave, Agnes Ong, a spokeswoman for parent company Alliance Financial, said in an e-mailed response to a query. She didn’t say when they might return.

看消息看新闻买股票是最愚蠢的。
