Troubled Airbus suffered its second blow in a week on Friday when the last cargo customer abandoned the freight version of its delayed A380 superjumbo, days after the planemaker announced 10,000 job cuts.
United Parcel Service said it planned to cancel an order for 10 Airbus A380 freighters, worth approximately USD$3 billion at list prices, joining its rival FedEx which cancelled an identical order last year.
The US express firms were among buyers angered by delays of up to two years in A380 deliveries, and had been the sole takers of a superfreighter version on which Airbus had pinned hopes of challenging the Boeing 747 in global airborne trade.
UPS said it was concerned that Airbus, a unit of EADS, could not fill its orders in a timely manner.
UPS had already said it was delaying taking deliveries of its 10 aircraft beyond 2010 and reached agreement with Airbus last week to wait for the results of a review.
All that changed when EADS and Airbus said on Thursday the planemaker would temporarily stop working on the cargo version of the world's largest airliner.
"UPS had intended to complete an internal study of whether it could wait until 2012 for the aircraft, but now understands Airbus is diverting employees from the A380 freighter program to work on the passenger version of the plane," it said.
"Based on our previous discussions, we had felt that 2012 was a reasonable estimate of when Airbus could supply this plane," UPS president David Abney said in a statement. "We no longer are confident that Airbus can adhere to that schedule."
Airbus said it respected the decision and remained confident of delivering the first passenger plane in October.
The highly unusual public spat ended a dire week for Airbus, which warned on Wednesday its survival was at stake as it cut jobs and put plants up for sale, triggering union walkouts.
The leader of one of France's biggest unions said he feared there would be forced lay-offs in the Airbus restructuring plan, despite assurances from the company and the French government.
"I hear the (French) prime minister say that we have assurances there will be no forced lay-offs," CGT secretary-general Bernard Thibault told France 2 television. "What is certain... is that at the contracting firms the consequence will be forced lay-offs," he said.
"We know what the next stage is -- outsourcing, contracting and then moving work to low-cost countries," Thibault said.
Unions have pledged to make the job cuts, and 1,500 lay-offs at technology form Alcatel Lucent,, an issue in French presidential elections in April and May.
Airbus says it could reconsider whether to impose forced redundancies if its fortunes have not improved in 12-18 months.
It will sell parts or all of six of its 16 sites in France, Germany, Britain and Spain after sacrificing EUR5 billion euros (USD$6.6 billion) in future profits due to delays to the A380 superjumbo.
It has also been hit by a weak dollar and the erratic development of its next model, the mid-sized A350 which it needs to compete with Boeing's fast-selling 787.
In Germany, workers in three plants being sold in full or in part refused to work for a third day, but said they would resume from late Sunday. French unions called a strike for Tuesday.
The head of Airbus in Germany, Gerhard Puttfarcken, told ZDF television that the firm was open to dialogue.
"We are at the start of the process, and it has been designed in a way to leave room for dialogue," he said.
Industry sources said on Friday that there were expressions of interest for the three German sites Varel, Laupheim and Nordenham from companies and financial firms.
On a more positive note, Germany said it did not expect delays to deliveries of the future A400M military airlifter despite the industrial crisis at Airbus.
The first 60 A400M aircraft ordered by the German army are due to be delivered and ready for use in 2010. The aircraft is seen as an integral part of European Union ambitions to develop the bloc's capacity as a global military player.

UPS said Friday it will cancel its order for 10 A380Fs, expressing doubt that Airbus can maintain the delayed delivery schedule agreed to last month and leaving the manufacturer with no orders for the freighter version.
UPS and Airbus reached an agreement in February that pushed delivery of the first aircraft from 2010 to 2012 and specified that either company could terminate the order later this year. The parcel delivery giant said it would take time to evaluate the order, but it reversed course last week and announced it will cancel the deal as soon as the agreement with Airbus permits.
UPS ordered the aircraft in January 2005 and at the same time cancelled commitments for 37 A300-600Fs. It originally had been scheduled to receive its first A380F in 2009.
The company "had intended to complete an internal study of whether it could wait until 2012 for the aircraft but now understands Airbus is diverting employees from the A380 freighter program to work on the passenger version of the plane," it said. Added COO and UPS Airline President David Abney: "We had felt that 2012 was a reasonable estimate of when Airbus could supply this plane. The cancellation casts doubt on the future of the A380F, on which work reportedly has been suspended. Airbus originally touted the freighter version as a key driver behind development of the large aircraft, pushing its potential to transport high volumes of cargo between major international trading centers. "Freight operations will be on a different scale, with new levels of range and efficiency, when the A380 freighter enters service," it said.
FedEx, Emirates and ILFC all previously ordered the A380F but subsequently cancelled or switched freighter orders to passenger versions. |

Thousands of Airbus workers go on strike in France
TOULOUSE, France: Thousands of Airbus workers went on strike at French factories of the European planemaker on Tuesday, protesting against a restructuring plan that has dominated France's presidential election campaign.
More than a hundred buses brought staff from factories in southern Toulouse to a rally in the city centre to denounce plans by Airbus to cut 10,000 jobs across Europe, including 4,300 in France.
In the northern town of Meaulte, some 1,500 workers marched through the rain to protest against the restructuring aimed at cutting costs after delays to its A380 superjumbo project.
"It's not right that one of the jewels of European technology is cutting 10,000 jobs over four years, while its order book is full for several years," Bernard Thibault, the head of the CGT union, told Les Echos daily.
Tuesday's strike was due to last a day but unions threaten wider action if Airbus carries out forced reducndancies, something it has promised not to do unless things get worse in 12-18 months.
In Germany, workers who staged walkouts last week resumed normal operations on Monday. They have agreed not to strike under a longstanding pay deal with Airbus management.
With an Airbus plane rolling off assembly lines on average every 9 working hours, production would be badly hit in both countries if French workers held a prolonged strike, since French factories produce many parts needed for the whole group.
Airbus has shot to the top of the political agenda in France, with Socialist presidential candidate Segolene Royal and her centre-right rival Nicolas Sarkozy both demanding action to help Airbus parent EADS, although by different means.
Finance Minister Thierry Breton said on Tuesday the French state was ready to raise its stake in EADS if needed and reaffirmed it would follow any capital increase at the company badly hit by delays to the new Airbus A380 superjumbo airliner.
"The state will follow the capital increases if these are proposed," Breton said in an interview with France Inter radio.
Sarkozy has also proposed pumping state money into Airbus to fund future development while Royal wants a group of French regions to buy shares in EADS, mirroring the involvement of German federal states which have bought symbolic stakes.
She has also said she would try to freeze the restructuring programme if she won power in the April and May election.
Royal was due to meet German Chancellor Angela Markel in Berlin on Tuesday to talk about the troubled firm, but Breton denounced her ideas as unworkable.
"Her proposal ... is populist and useless," he said in an interview with Metro newspaper, saying French regions did not have the financial clout of their German counterparts.
Breton said when EADS private shareholders Lagardere and DaimlerChrysler began discussions on reducing their holdings in 2005, he had told them "in the name of the government that not only would it not sell its shares but that it was ready to raise its stake and follow any capital increase if that were necessary".
His remarks on a capital increase mirrored comments by Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin who has said "the state will play its role," evoking the same forceful stance on industry which gave birth to his earlier policy of "economic patriotism".
Germany, in particular DaimlerChrysler, is suspicious of French state interference and insisted on reducing public influence in the company's founding shareholder pact in 2000.
The French decry political manoeuvrings in Germany too and resent Berlin's decision to bring in a state bank and regions to bolster its presence while dismissing French interventionism.
The political fighting over how to help Airbus workers dominated French newspaper headlines on Tuesday.
"(Centrist Francois) Bayrou and Sarkozy have had to change position and ended up praising public authorities, following the example of the Socialists," left-leaning Liberation daily said.
"Today, they are also pleading for the state to bring in capital again, to redefine the shareholder pact and the governance of the company," it said in an editorial.
The French government has expressed irritation that its hands are effectively tied by the shareholder pact designed by its Socialist predecessors when EADS was founded in 2000. But it risks opening EADS up to foreign predators if it weakens the takeover defences enshrined in the same pact.

March 7 (Bloomberg) -- A PT Garuda Indonesia plane carrying 140 people crashed and caught fire in central Java in Indonesia killing at least 58, a provincial health ministry official said.
The bodies retrieved from the 15 year-old Boeing Co. 737- 400 plane are being taken to Yogyakarta's main hospital for autopsy, Sugeng Dwi Riyanto, a health ministry official said by phone. The flight originated in Jakarta and crashed as it landed in Yogyakarta at about 7 a.m. local time.
The plane's fuselage melted as it was consumed by flames about 100 meters off the runway, according to television reports. Two months ago, a 17 year-old PT Adam Skyconnection Airlines Boeing Co. 737-300 plane, carrying 102 people, disappeared off the coast of Indonesia's Sulawesi island.
About five explosions were heard during today's crash, ElShinta radio cited Yusmintoro, an airport official as saying. There were 133 passengers and seven crew members aboard, according to Pujobroto, a Garuda spokesman, who uses one name.
``A Boeing air safety investigator is in Indonesia and will assist with the investigation,'' said Boeing spokesman Ken Mercer from Seattle. ``Boeing expresses profound concern for the safety of the passengers and crew.''
Local hospitals were treating at least 62 people for injuries. The injured include at least 26 Indonesians, one Japanese and one Australian, Sif Wuryanto, a spokesman at a local hospital said by phone.
Four of nine Australians on the plane are missing, Australia's Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said in a briefing in Jakarta today. The rest are being treated in local hospitals, he said. Downer, who is in Indonesia to attend a terrorism conference, will go to Yogyakarta later today.
Safety Investigation
The recent airline accidents have prompted President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to order an investigation into the country's transportation safety standards. About 80 percent to 90 percent of planes in Indonesia are over 10 years old, according to PT Lion Mentari Airlines spokesman Hasyim Arsal Alhabsyi.
Indonesia last month grounded seven of Adam Skyconnection Airlines's Boeing 737-300 planes, a third of its fleet, after the fuselage of one of its jets broke upon landing in Surabaya, East Java on Feb. 21.
On Feb. 28, Transport Minister Rajasa said Indonesia may ban airlines from buying older planes. The government may cut the maximum age used planes can be sold at to 10 years from the current 20, he said.
On Sept. 5, 2005, a PT Mandala Airlines jetliner crashed into a residential district North Sumatra province, killing 149 people.

KLIA Wins 2006 World Best Airport Award
DUBAI, March 13 (Bernama) -- Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) notched another mark in its success story when its flagship airport, the KL International Airport (KLIA), once again reaffirmed its ranking as the World's Best Airport in the 15-25 million passengers per annum category for the Airport Council International's Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Awards 2006.
San Diego Airport in the United States and Zurich Airport in Switzerland were placed second and third in the category.
The award presentation was held here last night in conjunction with the two-day Airport Council International (ACI) Airport Business and Trinity Forum hosted by the Dubai International Airport, which kicks off today.
MAHB managing Director Datuk Seri Bashir Ahmad said the award was very important because it was given by the ACI's survey on airport services and infrastructure which gave passengers full satisfaction.
"We are very pleased to receive this award today, I think it is really rewarding for us and we hope to do better next year as the category and other airports will be more competitive and challenging for us," he told reporters after receiving the award.
He said the wi fi services had contributed the most to KLIA's success as it was the first airport in the world to provide the service without any charges.
The KLIA also maintained its third place in both the Best Airport Worldwide and Best Airport in Asia/Pacific categories, behind leader Incheon Airport, Korea, and Hong Kong's Chek Lap Kok Airport while Singapore's Changi Airport was fourth.
When asked about KLIA being placed ahead of Changi Airport, Bashir said: "This is a very nice feeling. As you all know, we are always compared to Changi Airport in Singapore and it's nice to know that we have done very well this particular year and hope to continue to progress."
He said it is not just about the airport infrastructure but the quality of the service provided was more vital to please the passengers and winning the award had proven this.
"There are 28 features in the ACI ASQ survey and we had to monitor each feature to ensure that we will not slip behind and to ensure that we had given the good services. We will continue upgrading our services and facilities to meet the increasing demands of our passengers," he said.
ASQ is a survey conducted by the ACI by benchmarking airports performance on service quality, facilities and passengers feedback in several categories, namely Regional Awards, Size/Domestic Awards and Special Awards. A total of 81 airports worldwide participated in the ASQ Survey 2006.
KLIA first participated in the survey in 2002 and has won the award for the same category since 2005.

MALAYSIAN Airline System Bhd (MAS) will launch a new airline, "Firefly," which will commence operations with two Fokker F50 aircraft in early April.
Firefly will fly twice daily services out of Penang International Airport to Kota Bahru, Langkawi, Kuantan and Kuala Terengganu. It will also operate daily services to Phuket and Koh Samui in southern Thailand.
MAS told Bursa Malaysia today that Firefly will be run by wholly-owned subsidiary Flyfirefly Sdn Bhd (formerly known as Kelas Services Sdn Bhd).
Firefly will be managed by a separate management team, it added.
FlyFirefly has been issued the Air Services Licence and Air Operator’s Certificate by the Civil Aviation Department effective March 17 2007.

But orders for different versions of plane will keep Boeing busy
By JAMES WALLACE
P-I AEROSPACE REPORTER
After a production run of more than 450 planes, The Boeing Co. has built its final 747-400 passenger jet.
The last four planes still on the company's order books have been removed in a hush-hush deal that saw Philippine Airlines switch its order to the 777.
Those two 777-300ERs for Philippine Airlines were among 46 new jetliners that Boeing added to its 2007 order tally Thursday, including 26 787 Dreamliners. At list prices, those 46 planes are worth about $9 billion. But customers typically get discounts of 25 percent or more off the sticker price.
Although Boeing will not build any more 747-400 passenger planes, it's hardly the end of the line for the 747.
Already in development is the bigger and more efficient 747-8 freighter and a passenger version, the 747-8 Intercontinental. Boeing has 84 firm orders for the 747-8, including 20 Intercontinentals ordered by Lufthansa.
The freighter will enter service in 2009, followed by the Intercontinental in 2010.
And even before Boeing begins building the 747-8, it still has 36 other 747-400 freighter orders to fill.
It's been clear for some time that the production of the 747-400 passenger plane was over. No customer has ordered the jet since China Airlines in November 2002. The last 747-400 passenger plane was delivered to the airline in April 2005.
But until Thursday, Boeing had continued to carry four remaining 747-400 passenger jets on its books. Boeing would not confirm that the four jets were among seven ordered by Philippine Airlines in 1993, but people with knowledge of the matter said those were the same planes.
The 747-400, which has sold more than any other model of Boeing's venerable jumbo jet, entered commercial service in 1989 with Northwest Airlines, which along with United are the only two U.S. airlines that still operate the passenger version.
Boeing later developed an extended range model, the 747-400ER. Boeing has 18 747-400ER freighters left to deliver, along with 18 747-400 freighters. Those jets will be a bridge to production of the 747-8. The Intercontinental will carry about 50 more passengers than the 416-seat 747-400. Both the 747-8 freighter and the Intercontinental will also have a new and more efficient wing, as well as the fuel-efficient General Electric engines that have been developed for the 787.
Although the 747-400 is the largest jetliner in commercial service, it won't be once the 555-passenger A380 from Airbus goes into service late this year with Singapore Airlines. Unlike the 747, which has only a short upper deck behind the cockpit, the A380 is a true double-decker jet.
The A380 will make its first appearance in the United States Monday, when one lands at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport and another lands about the same time at Los Angeles International Airport. These are test flights. Airlines that have ordered the A380 are testing it under conditions similar to a commercial flight.
Boeing believes the 747-8 Intercontinental will appeal to airlines that need a plane that seats more than 400 passengers but fewer than the A380. But so far, only Lufthansa has ordered the 747-8 Intercontinental. An early matchup of the 747-8 Intercontinental and the A380 will be the decision later this year by British Airways. The airline is evaluating both jets for what could be a substantial order.
Although industry analysts say it's too soon to know if Boeing will persuade many current 747 operators to order the 747-8 Intercontinental, cargo operators have already made it clear they like the 747-8 freighter.
Boeing said Thursday it won six more orders for the 747-8 freighter, though it did not identify the customers. Boeing now has 60 orders for the freighter. Airbus does not have a large freighter and it recently delayed development of the A380 freighter after customers FedEx and UPS canceled their orders.
UPS could turn to Boeing's 747-8 freighter.
In addition to the six new 747-8 orders, Boeing announced orders for six 777-300ERs and 15 787-9s from unidentified customers. Those were in addition to the two 777s ordered by Philippine Airlines, five 787s ordered by Continental Airlines, six 737s ordered by Aviation Lease and Finance Co. of Kuwait, and six 787s also ordered by the leasing company.
That gives Boeing 116 firm orders so far in 2007.
Boeing is approaching 500 firm orders for the 787, which is scheduled to enter service in May 2008. Rollout of the first 787 is scheduled for July.
Meanwhile, Airbus is in line to receive some badly needed orders for its A350, which will compete against the 787 when it enters service in 2013.
Russian state flag carrier Aeroflot said Thursday it will order 22 A350s, while Qatar Airways said it is in talks with Airbus for up to 80 A350s.
The Russian airline had a preliminary agreement to order the 787 from Boeing, but final contract talks fell apart earlier this year because of political tensions between the U.S. and Russia.
Qatar Airways had announced two years ago at the Paris Air Show that it planned to buy 60 A350s. It never signed a firm contract with Airbus because the A350 was redesigned to make it more competitive with the 787. Qatar said it is in talks with Airbus for not only those 60 A350s but for 20 more. An announcement could be made in June at the Paris Air Show.

SEATTLE, April 27, 2007 -- The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] and launch- customer Lion Air today celebrated the delivery of the first Next-Generation 737-900ER (Extended Range) airplane. The airplane was delivered in a special dual paint scheme that combines the Lion Air lion on the vertical stabilizer and the Boeing livery colors on the fuselage. Boeing launched the 737-900ER program in July 2005 when Jakarta-based Lion Air announced the initial order for 30 of the newest 737 model. To date, Lion Air has ordered 60 737-900ERs.
"This is a proud day for me and the Lion Air family as we take delivery of the world's first 737-900ER," said Rusdi Kirana, president director of Lion Air. "The unprecedented economic advantages, passenger comfort and superior reliability of this airplane are key to our growth as we expand our routes and add new destinations."
The 737-900ER, the newest member of the Next-Generation 737 airplane family, increases the capability of the 737 by carrying more passengers and flying farther.

The twin-engine jet incorporates a new pair of exit doors and a flat rear-pressure bulkhead that allow a maximum capacity of 220 passengers in a single-class layout.
Aerodynamic and structural design changes, including strengthened wings, a two-position tailskid, enhancements to the leading and trailing-edge flap systems, optional Blended Winglets and auxiliary fuel tanks, will allow the 737-900ER to accommodate higher takeoff weights and increase its range to 3,200 nautical miles (5,900 km).
The 737-900ER will have substantial economic advantages over competing models, including 9 percent lower operating costs per trip and 7 percent lower operating costs per seat, and 565 nautical miles more range than the A321, which is more than 10,000 pounds (4,536 kg) heavier. The 737-900ER joins the 737-600, -700, -700ER and -800 airplanes and will share the same industry-leading reliability of the other Next-Generation 737 series models.
As of March 31, 2007, eight customers have placed orders for 104 Next-Generation 737-900ERs, and more than 6,800 orders have been placed for 737s.
Lion Air operates an all-Boeing fleet and is the largest low-cost airline in Asia with traffic approaching one million passengers per month since the airline's inception in June 2000.

Kenya plane 'crashes in Cameroon'
A Kenya Airways plane with 115 people on board has crashed in southern Cameroon, near the town of Niete, Cameroon state radio reports.
The flight, which originated in Ivory Coast, was reported missing on Saturday after it failed to arrive in Nairobi.
There is no confirmation of the crash from Kenya and no reports on the fate of the passengers.
Kenya's national carrier has a good safety record. However, 169 people died when one of its planes crashed in 2000.
Connecting passengers
Kenya Airways says the last message was received by the control tower in Douala, Cameroon, soon after take-off.
The airline says there were 106 passengers and nine crew on board the Boeing 737-800 plane.
It is not clear what the nationalities of the passengers are but it is thought many were connecting through Nairobi to other destinations.
The Kenya Airways website says the fleet is 23 strong but only one of the planes is a 737-800. It is 26%-owned by Air France KLM's Dutch company KLM.
In January 2000 a Kenya Airways plane crashed into the sea after taking off from Abidjan airport in Ivory Coast killing 169 people. There were 10 survivors.
