Hong Kong shares at 3-year-low on global sell-off
HONG KONG, Oct 10 (Reuters) - Hong Kong shares are set to open 7.7 percent lower, plunging below 15,000 points for the first time in nearly three years, trailing a devastating seven-day sell-off on Wall Street.
The benchmark Hang Seng Index .HSI is set to open down 1,225.72 points at 14,717.52, it lowest since November 2005.
Only 7 of the 1088 traded issues opened higher on Friday. |

European Factors--Index futures tumble on recession fear
LONDON, Oct 10 (Reuters) - European stock index futures tumbled in early
trade on Friday, tracking sharp losses on Wall Street and in Asia as recession
fears grew and investors shrugged off attempts by the world's governments to
unlock credit markets. At 0618 GMT, futures for the DJ Euro Stoxx 50 STXEc1, Germany's DAX
FDXc1 and France's CAC FCEc1 fell 6.8-7.3 percent. Asian stocks plunged on Friday with Japan's Nikkei 225 .N225 down nearly
10 percent. The U.S. government is weighing guaranteeing billions of dollars in bank
debt and temporarily insuring all U.S. bank deposits, in a bid to unfreeze bank
lending and staunch massive losses in equity markets, The Wall Street Journal
reported on Friday. The New York Times reported that U.S. and British officials were converging
on a similar blueprint to stem financial chaos involving injections of
government money into banks in return for ownership stakes and guarantees of
repayment for various types of loans. South Korea's finance minister will plead with U.S. bankers for extended
credit lines for the country's banks as fears they might buckle under the
strains of the global credit crisis. Commodity stocks are set to remain in focus, with metals prices dropping
sharply and crude prices falling five percent to $82 a barrel, a one-year low,
as fears that market turmoil will send demand for fuel slumping outweighed news
that OPEC will hold an emergency meeting in November. |
