Manhattan Fish opens outlets in Kuching
KUCHING: The Manhattan Fish Market has opened its very first two outlets here recently, marking the chain restaurant’s business expansion in East Malaysia.
The chain is a casual dining restaurant specialising in American-style seafood.
Its managing director George Ang said the opening of the outlets here was due to the overwhelming response from patrons, and the City was selected due to the demography, profile and level of strong middle income earners.
“Our motto: This is a whole world in itself, it’s seafood at its finest; we are serious about living it up to that standard and providing the best and freshest seafood to our customers,” Ang said.
In an interview at tHe Spring outlet here, he said The Manhattan Fish Market was the first Western seafood restaurant in the State and the prices were the same as that in Peninsular Malaysia.
“As there are only two outlets in Kuching, we have to import our seafood from Kuala Lumpur, which is expensive, but we want to maintain the prices of the food to be the same as in the peninsula,” he said.
He said the seafood in the peninsula was imported from countries like Australia, Vietnam, and Indonesia, adding that “our salmon is imported all the way from Norway”.
On the origin of the chain restaurant, Ang said the concept was conceived over 180 years ago.
The Manhattan Fish Market in Fulton Street has greeted the dawn from its location in Manhattan, New York, under the Brooklyn Bridge with the freshest seafood.
Since then, Malaysia has adapted and taken The Manhattan Fish Market to another level, providing people with the freshest seafood casual dining restaurants across the country, married together with the same tastes once found under the Brooklyn Bridge.
Some of the chain’s signature dishes are fish and chips, garlic butter mussels, red hot whole fish and giant flaming lobster platter.
The food served at the restaurant is either poached, fried or baked, depending on the patron’s taste.
Patrons must give the garlic butter mussels a go as the mussels are very fresh and the garlic butter sauce is not too thick or too watery and the taste is perfect and the baguette slices which come with the dish is great for dipping with the sauce.
Another dish that is a must try is The Manhattan Seafood Platter for 2, which is more than enough for two, with its deep-fried fish fillet, calamari rings, oysters and prawns served with chips and garlic rice.
The prawns are covered in Flaming Sauce where the restaurant server will use a burner to create a flaming effect to the dish.
tHe Spring outlet at 2,240 sq ft is able to cater up to 102 diners while the Boulevard Mall outlet spans 1,820 sq ft.
Each outlet is expected to achieve RM300,000 gross sales per month.
The outlet in tHe Spring opens daily from 10am to 10pm, regardless of public holidays.
For further information, call 082-231488 (tHe Spring outlet) or 082-462393 (Boulevard Mall outlet).

MPH Bookstore offers wide selection of books

Kee explaining the concept of the MPH Bookstore at The Spring.
By Connie Chieng
KUCHING: Book lovers here are in for a great time with the opening of MPH Bookstore’s latest new outlet at The Spring yesterday.
The outlet is the 28th MPH Bookstore’s outlet in Malaysia but the first in Sarawak. It occupies an area of over 7,000 square feet and offers a wide selection of books including those for children and fiction.
Besides books, it also offers complimentary products like magazines, music and movie products, stationery, educational toys and games, gifts and greeting cards.
Deputy Chief Operating Officer, Donald Kee said MPH Bookstore decided to open an outlet in East Malaysia because of overwhelming requests from the customers here who often travelled to West Malaysia in search of good books.
He added that customers here would get the same range of books as in West Malaysia.
Prices, he said, would be standardised in all the 28 outlets as MPH Bookstore’s main purpose was to play a vital role in helping the government to shape the minds of Malaysians, enrich their lives and encourage them to gain knowledge through reading of books.
Kee said the new concept store also offered customer friendly services and facilities such as a self-search terminal, a customer service counter, corporate services, customer special orders and a reading area with seats.
The General Manager for Operations, Kua Chun Pin said the bookstore welcomed readers’ views on the type of books they loved to read.
He said at the moment, it had “a little of everything.”
Urging bookworms to give him information on what they like, he said: “We will cater to what the people want and every two months, we will add new titles.”
