Comolli confirms Liverpool FC interest in Suarez and Young
Liverpool have confirmed that they have earmarked Luis Suarez and Ashley Young as two of their key transfer targets.
A deal for highly-rated Uruguay international Suarez continues to remain in limbo with both the Reds and Ajax understood to be involved in a stand-off over the striker's valuation.
And despite Aston Villa boss Gerard Houllier issuing a firm hands-off warning to any clubs planning to snare winger Young, Damien Comolli, Liverpool's director of football strategy, revealed that pair top the club's wanted list in this month's window.
"We are looking primarily for an offensive player because the team is short on pace," he told Canal+Sport.
"And as far as Suarez is concerned, at the moment there is no dialogue with Ajax.
"He is one of the players we are interested in. Will he be available in January? This is another story.
"For Young, if he is on the market then we will be interested. But I don't believe that is the case."
Comolli, who held similar positions at Tottenham and Saint-Etienne before joining Liverpool last year, also moved to dismiss suggestions of a crisis at Anfield as Kenny Dalglish looks to arrest their current mid-table slump, which has left European qualification a distant hope.
He added: "There is no crisis. I can see things from inside and I don't have this feeling. It is all a problem of confidence.
"There were quite a few injured players, players who came back from the World Cup worn out, and this was the main cause of our bad results.
"[Fernando] Torres and [Steven] Gerrard are exactly at the same physical level as they were in the year in which they finished second [in the 2008/09 season]." |
