Blatche, Wall lead Wizards over Jazz 108-101
Posted Jan 17 2011 5:20PM
WASHINGTON (AP) Flip Saunders sent John Wall a long text message on Sunday night. The Washington Wizards coach told his rookie guard that he'd exceeded expectations this season and didn't have to score a lot to have an impact.
Wall responded with 19 points and a career-high 15 assists on Monday to lead the Wizards to their fourth straight home victory and first two-game winning streak of the season, 108-101 over the Utah Jazz.
"We've been on him. We're asking a lot of him," Saunders said.
He told Wall: "Do what you do. Play with energy. Push it up. See if people are open and get people the ball and play with enthusiasm."
Wall did just that with 10 assists in the first 18 minutes of the game.
In the second half, it was Nick Young's turn. Young continued his hot play, scoring 22 of his 25 points in the second half.
The Wizards took control with a 10-0 run midway through the third quarter. With 6:40 remaining, Wall passed to JaVale McGee, who made a leaping, acrobatic dunk and was fouled by Raja Bell. He converted the free throw for a 62-55 lead.
At halftime, Washington led 42-39, and Saunders scolded Wall and his teammates for not finding Young, who had a career-high 43 points three games ago and 29 in his last game.
"We didn't get him any shots," Saunders said. "When he gets going, it opens things up for everybody else."
The result was not only the Wizards' first two-game winning streak, but their first win against a team with a winning record. Utah had won three straight, and played the first of a five-game road trip. The Jazz completed the season's first half with a 27-14 record.
Now, the Wizards are faced with a bigger challenge: winning on the road.
Though Washington is 12-8 at home, feasting on the league's bottom-feeders, they're a horrid 0-19 away from the Verizon Center. Instead of congratulating themselves for this mini-streak, they keep referring to the road woes.
"I think we've been in every game. Somehow, we don't finish it. Just make a ton of mistakes in the fourth quarter," Rashard Lewis said.
The Wizards will try for their first road win on Wednesday in Milwaukee, and Andray Blatche, who had 21 points and 11 rebounds, is attempting to figure out a reason for their struggles.
"When we're home, we have so much more energy and focus. When we're away, we're in the game into the fourth quarter and we lose that focus," Blatche said.
The Wizards were focused nearly the entire game as Blatche hit his first five shots, and they extended the lead to 73-58 with 3:39 left. But the Jazz, who have won 12 games this season after trailing by more than 10, looked as though they might have another comeback in them.
Utah was down 101-91 with 3:11 to play, then scored seven straight to close to 101-98 with 1:26 left. Blatche converted a free throw, Young hit a 3-pointer and Wall made two free throws to secure the win.
At 20, Wall has lots of pressure and he says he's not only OK with getting texts from his coach, he welcomes it, and he's even appreciating their nagging him about his composure.
"I get a fine every time I pout or show frustration on the court. I don't want to lose that money."
Utah was playing its first afternoon game of the season and the first of five on the road. In what amounted to an 11 a.m. start for the Jazz, they lost for just the third time in 17 games against Eastern Conference teams.
Deron Williams had 28 points and 11 assists for Utah in his first matchup with Wall. Al Jefferson had 25 points and 10 rebounds.
"They came out and played better than us," Williams said. "It looked like they wanted it a little bit more, like it meant a little bit more to them."
Notes: Williams reached double figures for the 47th straight game - a career best. ... Utah F Gordon Heyward missed the game with a sinus infection. ... Lewis grabbed his 5,000th career rebound. ... Eddie Jordan, the former Wizards and 76ers coach, visited and chatted with Washington coach Flip Saunders before the game. Jordan and Saunders are two of 11 Wizards coaches during the 23 seasons Jerry Sloan has coached the Jazz. |

Nets snap 6-game slide after ending Melo-drama
By TOM CANAVAN
Posted Jan 19 2011 10:01PM
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) Hours after owner Mikhail Prokhorov ended their long, drawn-out pursuit of Carmelo Anthony, the New Jersey Nets snapped a six-game losing streak with a 103-95 victory over the Utah Jazz on Wednesday night.
Brook Lopez scored 11 of his 20 points in a big third quarter and the Nets seemed to relax with the trade talk over in winning for only the second time in 13 games.
Sasha Vujacic added 15 points, Devin Harris had 14 points and eight assists and Travis Outlaw had 13 points as New Jersey matched its season high with seven players in double figures.
Al Jefferson had 21 points and eight rebounds and Deron Williams added 20 points and 10 assists for Utah, which lost its second straight.
Rookie forward Derrick Favors, the No. 3 pick in the draft who was mentioned prominently in the trade talks along with Harris, added 12 points and six rebounds for New Jersey.
The Nets seemingly took command in the third quarter with a 21-7 spurt that featured seven points by Lopez and six by Outlaw. A 3-pointer by Jordan Farmar, the fourth long-range shot in the run, stretched the lead to 71-57 late in the quarter.
Utah, which has rallied from a dozen double-digit deficits to win games this season, made a fourth-quarter run against the Nets, closing within 93-91 on a three-point play by Jefferson with 1:52 to play.
Lopez answered with a layup off Harris' feed at the 1:40 mark and Vujacic eventually stretched the margin to 97-91 with a layup with 30 seconds to go.
New Jersey iced the game at the free throw line.
The result was secondary to the pre-game drama.
After months of talks aimed at bringing Anthony from Denver to New Jersey, Prokhorov announced that the Nets were ending their drawn-out trade talks with the Nuggets.
Prokhorov said the deal had become too public, taken too long and had hurt his team, so he pulled the plug on the proposed deal that featured as many as 15 players.
"Really, I am not happy with the way the deal has gone until now," said Prokhorov, who fielded questions in English and Russian. "It has taken too long. It has been played out in public. The uncertainty has taken a toll on the players ... and I believe it has cost us several games."
NOTES: Ravens running back Ray Rice, TV reality star Kim Kardashian and rap mogul Jay-Z were at the game. ... This was an evening of Russian culture, and NHL hockey players Ilya Kovalchuk, Alex Ovechkin and Varlamov Semen, Olympic gold medalist Kenny Krayzelburg (swimming) and Viktor Petrenko (figure skating) were on hand. ... Nets G Anthony Morrow, who has been sidelined since mid-December, expects to play Friday against Detroit. |

当家后卫严重失常 不输才怪
Celtics stop Williams, crush Jazz 110-86
By JIMMY GOLEN
Posted Jan 21 2011 10:10PM
BOSTON (AP) Kevin Garnett scored 21 points, Paul Pierce added 20 and Rajon Rondo had 12 assists on Friday night to lead the Boston Celtics to their fifth straight win, a 110-86 victory over the Utah Jazz.
Deron Williams had a season-low five points for the Jazz, who have lost three in a row. Earl Watson scored 12 for Utah, while Paul Millsap, Gordon Hayward and Andrei Kirilenko had 11 apiece.
Glen "Big Baby" Davis scored 15 and Semih Erden had a career-high 14 points for Boston, which scored the last 11 points of the first half and never trailed by fewer than 17 in the second.
Williams made just one basket - his fewest in almost 12 months - to end a string of 48 straight regular-season games of double-digit scoring.
He took just four shots and played a season-low 23 minutes, picking up his second foul with 8 minutes left in the first quarter and his third with seven minutes left in the half. Utah's leading scorer with 22.1 points per game, he didn't score at all until 8:28 remained in the third quarter.
The three-game losing streak, following losses at Washington and New Jersey, is the longest of the season for the Jazz. The losses to the Wizards and Nets, two of the worst teams in the NBA, were relatively close; Friday's game against the Celtics never really was.
Boston scored seven of the first nine points and led by 16 later in the first quarter. After allowing Utah to score nine straight points to close the gap to seven, the Celtics scored the last 11 of the half and took a 59-41 lead.
Pierce, Garnett, Ray Allen and Davis were already in double figures at halftime, when Rondo had 10 assists; Boston shot 59 percent in the first half to Utah's 38 percent.
Utah briefly got within 17 points in the third quarter and 19 in the fourth.
The biggest problem for Boston was the loss of Shaquille O'Neal in the first quarter to a leg injury. O'Neal went into the courtside seats after a loose ball - he didn't get it, but he gave a fan a hug - and played just six minutes total, scoring one basket.
The 38-year-old former NBA MVP missed a week in November and another in December with leg injuries. The Celtics are already short on big men, with Kendrick Perkins not yet ready to come back from the torn ligaments from the NBA finals, and Jermaine O'Neal out another month with his injured left knee.
NOTES: Allen converted a four-point play when he hit a 3-pointer while drawing a foul from Raja Bell with 7:05 left in the second. ... Al Jefferson, who had seven points and five rebounds, played three seasons with the Celtics after they drafted him 15th overall in 2004, then traded him to Minnesota in the deal that brought Garnett to Boston. ... The Celtics scored half of their 26 points in the third quarter from the foul line, going 13 for 14. ... Williams' season-low had been the 10 points he scored against New Orleans on Dec. 17. |

爵士处在严重低潮期
76ers topple Jazz 96-85
Posted Jan 23 2011 12:57AM
PHILADELPHIA (AP) Three nights ago, a pair of crushing four-point plays hurt the Philadelphia 76ers. On Saturday, it was an unusual five-point play which made the difference for the Sixers.
Andre Iguodala scored 22 points, Lou Williams added 20 and the Sixers defeated the slumping Utah Jazz 96-85 on Saturday.
Elton Brand added 19 for the Sixers, who snapped a two-game losing streak and won for the 12th time in the past 15 games at home. Spencer Hawes grabbed 11 rebounds.
"It doesn't give us back the Orlando game, but we'll take it," Brand said, referring to Wednesday's 99-98 overtime loss to the Magic in which Philadelphia blew a four-point lead with 22.1 seconds left in regulation.
"Yeah, I'd say we were due one back. It was a big sequence in this game."
Philadelphia also improved to 13-7 at home, eclipsing last season's 12-win total.
"It was a great win for our guys," Sixers coach Doug Collins said.
Deron Williams had 20 points and 14 assists for the Jazz (27-17), who dropped their fourth in a row on their five-game road trip. It's their longest losing skid in slightly more than a year.
During the trip, Utah had lost at Washington, New Jersey and Boston. The final leg will be Tuesday at the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers.
"We've lost our focus," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "I think we're feeling sorry for ourselves."
Williams scored just five points in the 24-point loss at Boston, breaking a string of 48 straight games scoring in double figures.
Al Jefferson had 19 points and 13 rebounds while Paul Millsap had 18 points and 12 rebounds for Utah.
Andrei Kirilenko - who was benched in favor of rookie Gordon Hayward to start the game - had 12 points.
The Jazz had won nine of the past 10 games against the Sixers.
"We had moments when we played decent, but they controlled the game all night," Sloan said.
Philadelphia held a seven-point lead after the third quarter and quickly extended it to 78-66 early in the fourth.
Utah got within 78-71, but the Sixers responded with a 3-pointer by Iguodala along with being fouled by Raja Bell.
After Iguodala missed the free throw for a potential four-point play, Brand tipped it in for the rare five-point play.
"It was huge, getting the five-point play," Brand said. "We've lost games in ridiculous ways this season. We got something going in our direction."
Jrue Holiday then knocked down a pair of free throws for an 85-71 lead with 6:07 remaining.
The Jazz never got within nine the rest of the way.
The Sixers led 43-30 but Utah closed the first half on an 11-4 run. Williams hit a 25-foot 3-pointer from the top of the key at the buzzer to bring the Jazz within 47-41.
Notes: Utah coach Jerry Sloan is in his 23rd season as coach of the Jazz. During that span, the Sixers have employed 13 coaches. There were 14 lead changes. The Sixers are 15-12 since starting the season 3-13. Deron Williams was whistled for a technical in the final minute. |
