Sanjaya Malakar (born September 10, 1989 in Seattle, Washington) is a singer from Federal Way, Washington[1] who is currently a finalist on the sixth season of American Idol. He comes from a family of singers. He is the first person of Indian descent to make it to the top 12 on the show. He is also of Italian descent on his mother's side.[2]
Malakar cites Stevie Wonder as his idol, and sung Wonder's "Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I'm Yours)" at his Seattle audition. The judges have been critical of his performances since the audition, though Simon Cowell admitted that Malakar is "popular" with the voters. Despite the criticism from all three judges, Malakar has made it through to the Top 11 (although he came close to elimination on March 14, 2007, when he was in the Bottom 2). On March 19, 2007, Howard Stern announced on his Sirius Satellite Radio show that he was launching a campaign with his listeners to vote for Sanjaya to win the competition.[3] Vote for the Worst has him as their "pick" for this season.
Malakar performed for four years with the Hawaii Children's Theater group.
