Usually goes like this:
Someone: [says something in either Mandarin or Cantonese]
Me: Can you speak English?
Someone: Can you speak Mandarin?
Me: No
Someone: Cantonese?
Me: No. (Actually, yes) Good day to you. *walks off*
I make an exception for Cantonese if they are only asking for directions. Else I don't give a fucuk. Strangers who approach me speaking Chinese are usually opportunists looking to sell me insurance or rope me into some scam. Best not to even bother with them.
Of course, those who speak English might be trying to sell me something as well but I am willing to accord you a bit more respect if you can speak the language fluently. Try Engrish with me and you will be told to buzz off.
O RLY. Here's news for you guys. I didn't go to a Chinese school. My parents enrolled me in a Sekolah Kebangsaan. My parents themselves didn't attend a Chinese school. They were lucky enough (or maybe its just old enough) to have attended high school when our country was still using the BRITISH education system. Way better than our cacat Malaysian system.
So how is this different from them? There are language schools over in the US that teach African languages. By your logic, they MUST attend. Yet they don't.
How is Chinese even my so-called 'mother tongue'. How is it even my culture? I wasn't born in China. Neither are you. Why is it your mother tongue all of a sudden? Aren't you guys jumping the gun here? Don't kid yourself. You are not Chinese. Even China's Chinese will tell you are not one of them.
The reverse could be said that your failure to properly assimilate and get along with the world is the reason why you rather retreat into your own little ethnic shell.
And that...is YOUR farking problem.
I don't identify with America or England or China. Maybe Malaysia because I was born here, but this country doesn't seem to think I am part of it unless I am a particular race too. And THAT, is farking why I think this whole idea about race is just damned stupid and overrated.
If you like to think of yourself so much as Chinese, I would suggest you do what UMNO tells you to do and go back to China.
PS. Incidentally, I get a whole lot more respect in China than you guys. Being able to speak English fluently over there without sounding like an ah beng actually puts them in awe since they seen ti worship the West over there. On the other hand, they look down in disdain at your lousy putonghua.
Oh dear.
