UPS may cancel Airbus A380 order

Package delivery firm expected to terminate remaining order of 10 planes, leaving Airbus without an order for the embattled superjumbo, paper says.
January 19 2007: 7:33 AM EST

PARIS (Reuters) -- Airbus could soon be without a single order for the freighter version of its troubled A380 superjumbo, a market the planemaker only recently said held demand for 400 planes.

French newspaper Les Echos reported Friday that package delivery firm United Parcel Service Inc. (Charts) is expected to cancel the only remaining order - for 10 of the planes - next week. It did not identify its sources for the story.

Asked Wednesday whether UPS was poised to dump the plane, top Airbus salesman John Leahy said, "They are deciding that as we speak."

Friday, a spokeswoman for Airbus, when asked about the newspaper report said, "I have no information along that line."

Airbus this week revealed its 2006 overall orders total, which fell behind arch rival Boeing Co. (Charts) for the first time since 2000.

The numbers revealed Airbus' weakness in freighters, as Boeing took orders for 81 while Airbus won none.

This July, Airbus plans to deliver the last of its only freighter model, the 35-year-old A300/A310, while the company has announced plans to build a freight version of the A330-200.

Tom Williams, executive vice president for Airbus programs, said Thursday that whatever happened, the planemaker would not entirely end its development work on a freighter version of the A380.

Stepping stone

Analysts say the project is a stepping stone to offering a stretched version of the A380 airliner, which could seat 1,000 passengers.

Airbus could announce it will await better times for it to produce a cargo version, Les Echos said.

UPS rival FedEx Corp. (Charts) cancelled an order for 10 A380 freighters, citing delays that have put the project two years behind schedule.

It bought Boeing's 777 freighter instead.

Two other firms - airline Emirates and aircraft lessor International Lease Finance Corp. - have converted A380 freighter orders to passenger versions.

Wiring installation problems have delayed deliveries of the double-decker, with the first now due for delivery in late 2007 to Singapore Airlines.

The project Wednesday prompted the third profit warning in less than a year from Airbus parent firm EADS.

Airbus' long-term market forecast issued just two months ago called for demand for more than 400 very large freighters by 2025.

If the A380 freighter is shelved, its hopes will be pinned in the interim on the smaller A330-200F twin-engine freighter due in the second half of 2009.

Shares in EADS were down 0.5 percent at 23.94 euros versus Paris' CAC-40 which was off 0.4 percent as of 4:35 a.m. ET.

Malaysia on Thursday lifted the threat of canceling an order for six A380 airliners for national carrier Malaysian Airline System Bhd.

文章里写着:The project Wednesday prompted the third profit warning in less than a year from Airbus parent firm EADS.

Government leasing Airbus

Government leasing Airbus

SEPANG: The Government is leasing an Airbus from Penerbangan Malaysia Bhd (PMB) for VIP use, as it is cheaper than buying one.

Denying reports that the aircraft was only meant for use by the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said the aircraft would also be used by the King.

“We are not purchasing, we are leasing. Why should we buy an aircraft when it will cost so much more; so it is better for the Government to lease it and not worry about repairing the aircraft,” he said on his return from a working trip to London and Davos.

“The aircraft belongs to PMB, it is their money. The Government is only leasing it, just like MAS is leasing aircraft from PMB.”

Asked how much it cost the Government to lease the aircraft, Abdullah replied: “I will reveal the details later if you really want to know.

“The aircraft is for government use, not for the Prime Minister. And Government also means the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.”

Several blogs have reported that a US$50mil Airbus A319 corporate jet was ordered by the Government in mid-2005, and the interior work was being done in Switzerland.

PMB is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Khazanah Nasional Bhd, the Government’s investment arm, and is the parent company of Malaysia Airlines.

Rock-bottom airfares is the name of the game

Rock-bottom airfares is the name of the game

AIRASIA Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Tony Fernandes was not mincing his words when he launched the airline's tagline, “Now Everyone Can Fly,'' nearly half a decade ago.

Indeed, more and more Malaysians are flying and today, AirAsia handles six million passengers. By the turn of the decade, the numbers could well double.

The slogan speaks for itself but more interesting is the airline's tactic of offering rock-bottom prices.

AirAsia's hot seller is its RM9.90 one-way airfare. That is its base and it is offered on almost, if not all, the sectors the airline flies. Today, a traveller can get lucky with a free ticket or pay only RM9.90 one-way for a flight to Macau or Phuket.

AirAsia has indeed revolutionised the air services industry in Malaysia and its pricing model is nothing unique. Most low-cost carriers offer rock-bottom prices at some point in a year.

But what surprised the marketplace this week was that even national carrier Malaysia Airlines (MAS) has opted for rock-bottom airfare pricing. It appears to have taken a liking to the number nine too.

For the MAS travel fair, the airline is offering a one-way RM9 fare for the Kuantan-KLIA and Langkawi-Penang sectors. The interesting part is that the return price for the sectors is the same as the outward fare – something even AirAsia cannot match for certain routes.MAS' move is unprecedented but it is all done in the name of competition. Somehow, MAS has come to realise the need to slug it out for Malaysian travellers' ringgit. Its offers may be for a limited period but certainly is a welcome change.

But AirAsia was not sitting pretty in the other corner. To guard its turf, it has come up with what it calls the “craziest sale in town'', offering up to 99% discounts on some routes. This is just weeks after the low-cost carrier offered one million free seats.

For the traveller, the best bargains count. The price war is on and may get crazier as airlines fight to fill seats and next month, the Matta fair should have some good buys too.

The fight for domestic and regional passengers is on-going but come July, airfares to Europe may come under pressure with AirAsia X expected to take to the skies with its maiden flight to Britain. Fernandes has promised very good pricing, with some tickets even going for RM9.90 one-way.

And by September, the KLIA-Sydney route will see the entry of a new player in Australia’s Jetstar. Being a low-cost carrier, its pricing is expected to be more attractive than full-service carriers such as MAS.

There is no denying that air travel has never been the same since the emergence of AirAsia with its RM9.90 fares. Although Malaysians have more choices now, the base of RM9 is unlikely to go any lower.

However, the rate should find its way to more sectors, and that is what Malaysian travellers hope for. Then, more and more Malaysians can fly, not just via low-cost but with full-service carriers as well, at rock bottom prices.

MAHB recommends new LCC hub

MAHB recommends new LCC hub

By B.K. SIDHU

PETALING JAYA: A new low-cost carrier (LCC) hub will take shape next to the present satellite and main terminal buildings (legacy hub) at the KL International Airport (KLIA), if the Government accepts the recommendations of airport operator Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB).

The legacy hub now caters to full-service travellers and the LCC hub, budget travellers, and they could be linked by a sky train. For the ease of travellers, MAHB has also recommended that the Express Rail Link, which connects KL Sentral with KLIA, be extended to the LCC hub.

“We have identified the site and made our recommendations. The design for the new satellite and terminal buildings (LCC hub) will be different as it would take into account the operational requirements of the LCCs, just as we did for the present LCCT (low-cost carrier terminal),'' MAHB managing director Datuk Seri Bashir Ahmad said when contacted by StarBiz.

“We would be getting AirAsia Bhd involved in designing the terminal,” he said.

Bashir said MAHB was “fully supportive of the Government’s efforts to promote low-fare travel and the company would continue to provide and develop infrastructure to accommodate low-cost travel.”

The search for a new site began because the LCCT is only a temporary site. The capacity of the present terminal can be expanded to handle 15 million passengers a year from 10 million now, but it certainly cannot cater to the growing demand for low-cost air travel. The land around the LCCT is inadequate for future expansion.

Currently, the LCCT handles six million passengers but, by the turn of the decade, the number could well exceed 12 million.

Under the original master plan for KLIA, there is ample land to house four satellite buildings, two terminal structures and five runaways. If all the buildings are constructed, KLIA should be able to handle 100 million passengers a year.

For now, only one satellite and terminal building is available to handle 25 million passengers a year. There is no denying that a new satellite building needs to be constructed next to the legacy hub to meet future growth in full-service passengers, but before 2015.

What is more urgent now is a permanent structure for low-cost air travel since growth in this sector is robust. Therefore, MAHB's proposal makes a lot of sense. It would not just allow both the legacy and LCC hubs to be housed next to each other but, in terms of logistics, it will provide connectivity for passengers who need to change from low-cost to full-service carriers.

On a broader perspective, such as move can potentially attract more airlines to KLIA, given the combined number of passengers at both hubs would be higher that it is today.

This would help Malaysia realise its dream of becoming a transport hub since the combined passenger capacity (of both legacy and LCC hubs) at KLIA in the future could well exceed 60 million.

Bashir said the LCC hub would only be ready in 2015. In the meantime, upgrading work at the LCCT would continue to cater to AirAsia X’s long-haul flights, he said. The expansion involves the extension of the apron for wide-body aircraft, expansion of the terminal building, review of the baggage-handling operations, cark-park extension and a food court.

Currently, AirAsia, its Thai and Indonesian subsidiaries, as well as Cebu Pacific Airways operate from the LCCT. In July, AirAsia X will begin flights to Britain.

Miraculous escape for trainee pilot

NIBONG TEBAL: A trainee pilot had a miraculous escape after the two-seater plane he was flying crashed into the sea off Pulau Aman.

Nor Azlan Yazid, 25, from Selangor, jumped out of the Diamond D-40 HM Aerospace aircraft just before it hit the water some two nautical miles from Pulau Aman at 5.40pm yesterday.

A fisherman, Heah Soon Boay, 54, rescued him after spotting him floating in the sea with his life jacket.

Met at a private hospital later, Nor Azlan, who sustained minor injuries, said he had engine trouble.

“Although the plane was vibrating uncontrollably, I managed to remain calm thanks to my training and decided to make an emergency landing in the sea,” said the trainee with HM Aerospace who had clocked about 80 hours' of flying experience during his one-year training.

Nor Azlan said he was making a return trip to Langkawi from Penang at 5.22pm in the single-engine plane after earlier touching down at the Penang International Airport around noon.

Abdul Halim Ayob, 46, who operates a restaurant in Pulau Aman, said he saw the plane spiralling down at about 5.40pm.

“I saw the pilot jumping out of the plane before it sank into the sea,” he added.

Meanwhile, a northern region marine police spokesman said five patrol boats were sent out to search for the wreckage, which had yet to be found at press time.

Penang Airport Civil Aviation Department manager Ooi Chuan Leong said the air traffic control tower received Nor Azlan's SOS signal earlier and immediately sent out help.
