When market fell, media tried to find reasons for the drop. This week the main reason was a rebounding US dollar. “With short-term interest rates very low, global traders have turned to borrowing funds cheaply in the U.S. and then reinvesting the proceeds in equities and commodities, looking to lock in higher returns and benefiting from further erosion in the dollar.” However a rebound in US dollar caused some of this so-called carried trade to unwind and hence market retreated.
Since the media is currently focusing on US dollar, market direction next week should very much depend on the dollar index (http://www.marketwatch.com/investing/index/DXY), a measure of US dollar against a basket of other currencies, including gold. A retreating US dollar should benefit the stock market.
Many important US economic indicators and the US FOMC meeting next week should drive higher market volatility day by day but market may yet move no where on the whole by the end of the week. Many smaller companies in Singapore shall announce results in the next two weeks and this should drive some sporadic rally of stocks selectively.
Hence the strategy for short term investors next week may be to trade in the direction opposite to overnight US market performance. For example, buy on gap downs caused by US overnight weakness and sell to rally on gap ups due to overnight rally.

Resistance Levels: $0.60, $0.63, $0.6424, $0.68
Support Levels: $0.56, $0.511, $0.50
SIRIUS XM Radio Inc. (SIRI) stock appears to be stabilizing and is in a mini uptrend. I am watching out for a close above the 50 day moving average located at $0.63. If SIRI closes above the 50 day and breaks above the previous high of $0.6424, I will buy the stock. I will then place a stop loss order at $0.62 just incase the trade doesn't work. |
