19-12-2007: Padini to have 15 concept stores by end-FY08
by Lim Yu Min
SHAH ALAM: Padini Holdings Bhd will have 15 multi-brand concept stores by the end of the financial year ending June 30, 2008 (FY08) from nine currently, said its executive director Chan Kwai Heng.
Since July 1, the company has opened four multi-brand concept stores in the Pavilion KL, Aeon Bukit Tinggi Shopping Centre in Klang, Sunway Pyramid shopping complex’s new phase in Petaling Jaya, and Kinta City in Ipoh.
“Another two new concept stores will open in the East Coast Mall in Kuantan and the Spring shopping mall in Kuching before March next year,” he said after the shareholders meeting here yesterday.
“Other than that, we have also opened two single-brand shops in the Mid Valley Megamall, which carry the Vincci Plus and Vincci Accessories labels. We will also open an outlet in Dataran Pahlawan Melaka by January next year,” he said.
Excluding the franchise stores, the company runs 170 stores locally, with the brand names of Vincci, Seed, Padini Authentics, PDI, Padini, P&Co, Miki Kids and Miki Mom.
On its overseas exports business, a total of six new Vincci/VNC stores have been opened since July this year with another two expected to open in India by the end of this month.
During the same period, three non-performing stores were closed, added Chan.
For the financial year ended June 30, 2007 (FY07), domestic turnaround accounted for 89.2% or RM282.6 million of the group revenue. Exports fell to RM34.3 million from RM41.7 million a year earlier due to foreign clients scaling back their purchases.
Padini currently has a presence in the Asean region, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates, and plans to further develop its franchise and dealership stores in Egypt and Turkey.
At the shareholders meeting on Dec 19, the shareholders have queried the board on the RM2.3 million loss in its café operations in FY07.
Chan explained that the café business was meant to be part of branding process of the Seed label but due to various circumstances, it has to be shut shut down some of the cafes which were not profitable.
“Due to various circumstances, the business has been affected, hence we have shut down the cafes in One Utama Shopping Centre (old wing) and in Sungei Wang Plaza. The one located in One Utama Shopping Centre (new wing) will also be shut down in the future,” he said.
“We are still on the learning curve in the café busines operation, and we find that there is potential in this business since it’s a further extension of the Seed label lifesyle. A Seed café was opened in the Mid Valley Megamall in September this year, and we hope that with these changes, we can turn the café operations around,” he added.
Comenting on the dividend policy, Chan said Padini is paying more dividends each year, adding that in FY07, a total interim dividend of 20 sen less tax has already been paid, while the board has further recommended a final dividend of 5 sen per share less tax.
Following the completion of the subdivision of its existing oridinary shares of RM1 each into ordinary shares of 50 each, the proposed final dividend of 5 sen will be converted to 10 sen per share hence the company is paying 30 sen gross dividend in FY07.
