Chelsea has prepared a £6 million bid for the Inter Milan full back Maicon. Sources have revealed that Maicon’s agent is scheduled to meet the Chelsea administration in London later this week.
The 30-year-old Brazilian international, Maicon is considered to be one of the best right backs in the world. Moreover, Maicon has the ability to play as a full back on either wings. Maicon primarily as a defender but his ability to move up field with the attack is what has won him many fans.
Chelsea has made signing in a new right back as one of their top priorities this summer. The two Portuguese full backs at Stamford Bridge, Paulo Ferreira and Jose Bosingwa were released from their contracts with Chelsea.
The Champions League winners of last season have no intentions of signing them back which means Chelsea will be in severe shortage of full backs next season.
The Inter Milan veteran, Maicon can prove to be a good signing for Chelsea. If Chelsea can sign the veteran for £6 million then this deal could turn out to be a steal.
Maicon, who has been playing at San Siro for six seasons, is one of the four shortlisted full backs that Chelsea manager Roberto di Matteo plans to bring at Stamford Bridge this summer. Roberto di Matteo has been allotted huge funds from Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich after the Italian turned the club’s fate around with a Champions League and FA Cup victory.
Roberto di Matteo’s four-man list of potential Chelsea full backs include; Borussia Dortmund star Lukasz Piszczek, Ajax’s stalwart Gregory van der Wiel, Lille’s Frenchman Mathieu Debuchy and Manchester United youngster Rafael da Silva.
Roberto di Matteo is aiming to bring in a veteran right back with a nominal transfer fee to pair up with left back Ashley Cole in the first team. If Chelsea ends up signing Maicon then the London club can boast about having one of the best full backs of this era.
Interestingly, Maicon snubbed a transfer offer from Real Madrid just a couple of weeks. The reason behind Maicon’s refusal to play for the club every player dreams of playing for is quite simple. Maicon is still looking for first team action which will be nearly impossible with Real Madrid.
According to sources, Chelsea has prepared a three-year contract for Maicon which offers a weekly salary of £80,000. |
