Mahaleel 的经典 'Savvy is my first lotus'
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Malaysian automaker Proton has launched a new city car, but the company's CEO says buyers should look at the car as "my first Lotus."
Proton owns British brand Lotus, and used the sports carmaker's expertise in ride and handling to give the new Savvy hatchback a sporting feel. The car is powered by a 74-hp, 1.2-liter gasoline engine with a five-speed manual transmission, giving it a maximum speed of 106 mph. Lotus stiffened up the chassis, after benchmarking the car against German and Italian rivals.
"It's not a sports car, but certain elements have been engineered into the car that'll give you a taste of what it's like to drive one of the world's best handling vehicles," said Proton Group CEO Tengku Tan Sri Mahaleel Tengku Ariff. "We'd like to think of it as 'my first Lotus.'"
The Savvy has just gone on sale in Malaysia and will go on sale in Europe from September to October. It will enter the fiercely competitive small-car sector; key rivals are the Chevrolet Matiz, Honda Jazz, Kia Picanto and Toyota Yaris, Proton believes.
What this means to you: Ask yourself, "If this car eventually turns into a Lotus, will my (insert your economy car here) turn into a Corvette?" |
