Taiwan Bans Sales of Indomie Instant Noodle

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Taiwan has recalled Indomie instant noodles produced by PT Indofood CBP Sukses Makmur Tbk from the market, following the Taiwan Health Department’s Food Security Bureau claim that they had found methyl p-hydroxybenzoate and benzoic acid, two preservatives banned in food products.

After the Friday announcement, two of Taiwan’s biggest supermarkets, Park nShop and Wellcome, recalled Indomie off their racks. In the Taiwan markets, one package of five Indomie is sold for HK$ 10. This is cheaper than other brands which are sold for about HK$ 15 to HK$ 20.

The charges made by the Taiwanese government were refuted by Indomie’s importer in Taiwan, Fok Hing Trading. Fok’s officials stated that Indomie instant noodles have met food security standards in Hong Kong and the World Health Organization. Based on the quality assessment on Indomie last June, no illegal preservatives were found. “Those containing dangerous contents are products which are illegally imported,” read Fok Hing’s official statement yesterday.

An Indonesian supermarket in Taiwan, East-Southern Cuisine Express, made a similar statement. Indomie instant noodles were sent under official auspices, so they are safe for consumption. The negative image of Indonesia’s best-selling instant noodles could be the result of illegal products being smuggled into Taiwan through Thailand.

Taufik Wiraatmadja, director of PT Indofood CBP Sukses Makmur said the instant noodles recalled from Taiwanese market are not those produced by Indofood for the Taiwanese market. The products exported to Taiwan have met the Taiwan Health Department’s Food Security Bureau’s requirements.

According to Taufik, his products have met the global regulations set by the Codex Alimentarius Comission. Codex was established by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). As many as 168 countries, including Indonesia, the US, China, Japan, Germany, and the UK, have agreed to comply by the food standards set by Codex Alimentarius Commission. Taufik said Indofood had always met the safety regulations and standards applied in many countries where Indomie instant noodles are marketed. “We have been exporting instant noodles for over 20 years,” he said.

The Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) chief Kustantinah agrees with Taufik. She said the instant noodle products registered in Indonesia, including Indomie, are safe for consumption. The maximum limit for the use of methyl p-hydroxybenzoate and benzoic acid as food additives is regulated in a 1988 minister’s regulation in 1998.

The incident has been a big concern to the Indonesian Trade Ministry. They plan to fly to Taiwan to confirm whether these products are produced by factories in Indonesia. “The brand could have been attached on a different product,” said Deddy Saleh, an executive from Trade Ministry’s Foreign Trade directorate-general. His office will also request the Taiwanese authorities to confirm the verification.

Bambang Mulyanto, the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Economy’s chief in charge of Trade in Taipei said the Indomie market in Taiwan is quite large because there are 150.000 Indonesian workers in Taiwan. In addition, many cafés sell Indomie. “This has worried businessmen in Taiwn," said Bambang.

The Coordinating Minister for the Economy Hatta Rajasa hopes the ban will not lead to a trade war. “I want this to be fair, open and studied together so it will be objective.” Hatta does not want the same case that happened to crude palm oil which led to Indonesia’s domination in the world’s market to be reduced, to happen again. “That is why we must be objective,” he said.

衛生部長：
化驗77樣本沒污染‧
國內快熟麵放心吃
                        

（布城13日訊）衛生部長拿督斯里廖中萊今日說，衛生部已從市面上收集了77個快熟面的樣本進行化驗，發現並無污染現象，因此，國內的快熟面可安全食用。

他保障該部會嚴厲的進行這方面的調查，向公眾大派定心丸。

他是針對台灣指印尼製造的快熟面Indo Mie Mi Goreng含有化妝品防腐劑，禁止在台灣售賣的事件，向記者發表談話。

他說，隨著台灣指示下架後，大馬也即刻啟動機制，到市場上收集了77個樣本進行化驗，30項已出爐的樣本證實沒有被污染。

他說，根據該部對羥基苯甲酸甲酯鈉防腐劑的監察，適量防腐劑對健康並不會構成威脅。

他說，根據食品添加劑專家委員會（JE C FA）的審查，每天食用不超過個人體重比例10mg的防腐劑，並不會危害健康。
