为什么需要Pad Belt?那些贫穷的妇女们,可能没有内裤,所以需要捐Belt款的布棉。。
"Not just a piece of cloth" - 是一个在印度提供布片给贫穷妇女的运动,也教导她们基本的健康与卫生知识。
IDEA:
A women whether in a village, town or a big metro needs asanitary napkin for those 5 days in a month. That need transcends cultural, social and economic factors. In most Indian villages where people don't haveenough to get food and shelter, the women - the most marginalised, end up usingthe most worthless cloth available in the house. This cloth is reused many atimes without proper washing or drying in the sunlight. The moisture and dirtcauses various life threatening diseases like cervical cancer and other hygienerelated infections.
Millions are spent on lecturing on better reproductive and women health issuesbut this basic issue is never addressed which can save thousands of lives. GOONJ...is working on generating awareness and empathy among urban women to supportmillions of deprived women. Most women are largely unaware even about thepractices of their own maid servants.
HOW DO WE DO IT :
For seven years GOONJ..is running a nation wide movement channelising vital resources lying in excessin urban households to the poor in far flung rural areas in Indiato help channelise their meager resources to other more pressing needs. Womenin the metros face similar experience in those 5 days, only they can afford asanitary napkin. We work towards sensitising urban women on this issue.
For most urbanwomen in different age groups; in schools, colleges, corporates etc theappalling conditions of women in villages and the big health risks involved area big eye opener. They are motivated by the easily available solution their oldcloth can offer.
Donated old clothis washed and sanitized to make 1ft by 1ft cloth sanitary napkins. Our trustednetwork of grassroots NGOs reach it to the remote villages. The emphasis is ontalking about this "never talked about" but basic issue and provide abetter piece of cloth.
INNOVATION :
GOONJ's.. innovativeapproach involves looking for a solution for village women's basic need byinvolving a broader and yet a similar target audience of urban women. Thestrategy is a win win situation for all the stakeholders. The urban womendiscarding old unusable cloth, with better awareness and empathy on an issueshe closely identifies with, is able to channelise this useless material as aresource for her less fortunate counterpart.
The problem of boththe groups finds solutions by articulating their common status as women andadvocating an ethical standpoint that every women deserves the right to a basicdignity in those 5 days. In one process a big medical problem faced by villagewomen is addressed, a channel recycling resources lying unutilised in urbanhouseholds is formed and more significantly a long lasting link and empathybetween urban and rural women is developed.
SUSTAINIBILITY :
The main aspect ofresource generation is taken care by converting wastage into a resource.Nothing is being manufactured rather we are trying to provide betteralternatives within the same system but with more awareness and participationon the basic issues related to this. Involvement of a large urban femalepopulation as active participant will ensure regular supply of raw material, which is their old cloth. A well established network of grassroots NGOs, CBOs,Panchayats, Self Help Groups, Indian army as distribution partner across thecountry ensures a proper distribution mechanism. Individuals and corporates arealready coming forward to sponsor detergent, washing machines etc which furtherreduces project costs for a project having far reaching impact.
SOME COMMENTS :
Sorry to say except for the disadvantage of not being stainproof or impermeable - cloth is any day better than cotton and sanitarynapkins.
What you need to invest in is ensuring the fabric is properly sterilised andpacked. Once used there is no problem in reusing the fabric " subject toits withstanding washing"
