Palm-based biofuel may be viable this year

The more environment-friendly Envo diesel may be commercially viable if the crude plan oil price is not more than RM3,000 a tonne
USAGE of Envo diesel, a palm-based biofuel, can start this year if the crude palm oil price (CPO) remains at below RM3,000 a tonne, Deputy Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities A Kohilan Pillay said today.
“If the crude palm oil price is below RM3,000 a tonne, it will be commercially viable, but if it is more than RM3,000, it will be difficult,” he said after opening the First International Conference on oil palm biomass.
CPO price is currently hovering at RM2,500 a tonne. Kohilan Pillay said envo diesel would still be subsidised as its price had to be the same as diesel but it was an alternative for consumers as it was more environment-friendly. Diesel is being sold at RM2.58 a litre.
Envo diesel, a mixture of five per cent processed palm oil and 95 percent petroleum diesel, will be used in stages, starting with selected government vehicles and later moving on to public use.
The CPO industry has entered a bearish stage with prices remaining soft due to external factors such as soyoil and crude oil prices.
In view of falling prices, industry experts had called on the oil palm industry to play a greater role in carbon trading and biomass.
Kohilan also called on the industry to seize the opportunities in biomass and trading in carbon credits.
“Ever since carbon trading was introduced as an instrument under the Kyoto Protocol to mitigate the global increase in greenhouse gas emissions, many projects in the oil palm industry qualify for support to earn carbon credits,” he said.
Asked whether there would be a change in the Windfall Tax threshold price, he said there was no decision yet.
Planters were reported to have asked for a higher threshold price to calculate windfall tax on oil palm companies in view of falling crude palm oil prices.
They had asked for crude palm oil threshold price of RM2,500 a tonne, revised from the current threshold price of RM2,000 a tonne. — Bernama

Biodiesel exports to rise as palm oil prices fall

MALAYSIA expects a 50 per cent growth in biodiesel exports to some 143,000 tonnes this year, as the business has become viable again on lower cost of crude palm oil.
Yesterday, the third month benchmark palm oil futures closed at RM2,436 per tonne, 46 per cent off from its all-time high of RM4,486 per tonne in March.
The price of palm oil traded in the futures market has been falling due to an oversupply of vegetable oils worldwide. The price drop is worsened by buyers from consuming countries, in recent weeks, attempting to renegotiate import contracts and defer their deliveries.
"We should see higher exports of biodiesel as palm oil prices have come down significantly. But this is subjected to palm oil satisfying the food sector first before the excess can be channelled for biodiesel," said Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Datuk Peter Chin.
"If feedstock prices remain bearish and crude oil prices remain at current levels, we could see a 50 per cent growth from last year's 95,013 tonnes," he told Business Times in a telephone interview yesterday.
"Already, the monthly exports are averaging more than 12,000 tonnes," he added.
Since April, the average export price of palm methyl ester has improved from RM3,255 per tonne to RM3,902.
On local usage of Envo Diesel, Chin said the government prefers to roll out the programme on unsubsidised sectors first.
"It will depend on whether palm oil prices remain bearish. When we implement usage of Envo Diesel for local consumption, it has to be tried on unsubsidised sectors like construction and transportation before we can consider mandating it at all petrol stations across the nation," he said.

超維特或轉佳
何人可仍有看頭
(吉隆坡28日訊)儘管何人可(HOVID,7213,主板消費)淨利走低,券商認為,隨著原棕油(CPO)價格下滑,旗下的超維特(CAROTEC,0076,自報股)未來數季貢獻將回揚。
截至今年6月財年,何人可全年營業額增長近15%,報2億1473萬令吉,淨利卻下滑28.4%至1526萬1000令吉,主要受高企原棕油和活性藥用成分(API)價格拖累。
僑豐投資研究分析員諾法茲指出,何人可財報符合預測,藥劑業務持續錄得穩定盈利,貢獻超過76%稅前盈利,賺幅為13.8%。
他說,何人可早前宣佈與印度藥劑公司聯營,料可支持藥劑業務增長,產能隨著產品系列擴展而倍增。
“再者,何人可能進一步拓展印度市場,提升成本效益,畢竟勞工成本低廉,且印度為全球首屈一指的活性藥用成分生產國,有助以較低價格購入。”
他指出,原棕油價格揚升,繼續壓縮超維特賺幅,導致后者末季稅前蒙虧140萬令吉,去年同期則獲670萬令吉淨利。
“不過,隨著原棕油價格進一步走緩,我們預計,超維特未來數個季度業績表現有望改善。”
研發棕油特性為主的超維特(CAROTEC,0076,自報股),由何人可大股東何樹生創辦,何人可持股約半。
諾法茲認為,儘管超維特前景看似稍微明朗,但目前要將較低原料成本效益納入考量仍嫌過早,特別是原棕油價格下檔可能只屬于短期,未來可能回揚。
因此,僑豐投資研究維持何人可財測“短線買進”(Trading Buy)評級和30仙目標價。
閉市時,何人可報24.5仙,跌1.5仙,全日成交量13萬7000股。

EU lawmakers vote to lower key biofuels targets

BRUSSELS: European Union lawmakers have proposed cutting a target for using traditional biofuels to six per cent of road transport fuel by 2020, while Malaysia's Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Datuk Peter Chin Fah Kui warned the current plan is discriminatory.
The EU Executive Commission earlier this year proposed that 10 per cent of all road transport fuel should come from renewable sources, without specifying how much of that should be biofuels or vehicles powered by renewable electricity or hydrogen.
If agreed in a vote later yesterday by the European Parliament's influential industry committee, the tweaks would formally include electric and hydrogen-powered cars within the 2020 road transport target.
"At least 40 per cent of this (10 per cent) target shall be met from electricity or hydrogen from renewable sources," said a draft document seen by Reuters.
The proposal backed by three major voting groups also listed other alternative options including energy produced from waste, from biomass such as woodchips, or from algae produced in vats.
The EU's original 10 per cent target has been attacked by environmentalists, who say traditional "first generation biofuels" produced from grains and oil seeds contribute to rising food prices and deforestation.
"Crops should be used to feed people and not fuel cars," said Adrian Bebb of Friends of the Earth Europe.
"The promotion of biofuels in Europe will increase food prices and force millions of people in developing countries into poverty."
The EU has responded with tough standards to ensure its thirst for biofuels does not cause unnecessary damage.
But Malaysia's Chin told Reuters on Wednesday those criteria had been poorly thought out, in particular the EU's assumption that most palm oil plantations led to deforestation.
Many were planted on agricultural land that had been cleared of trees decades ago and had now become unproductive, or on old coconut or rubber plantations, he said.
"We could ask what happened to the forests of Europe," he said. "Those fields of rape seed must once have been forest."
The proposed EU standards also demand that biofuels must reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 35 per cent compared with petrol or diesel, together with an assumption that palm oil would only reach 32 per cent and therefore miss the target.
Malaysia argues the EU proposals are biased and that its palm oil can achieve CO2 reductions of around 60 per cent.
"All we want is fairness based on science," said Chin.
The committee decision to be voted yesterday will likely serve as a proxy for the EU Parliament's position during talks between the parliament and the 27 EU member states ahead of a full parliament vote in October.
The committee vote has become more crucial than usual because France, which holds the EU's rotating presidency, is aiming for a quick turnaround on environment legislation.
Paris wants to go to international climate talks in Poznan, Poland in December with proof that it is serious about battling climate change and has passed laws to do so.
Chin said the EU proposals were currently not compatible with World Trade Organisation rules in their current form.
"The EU is now trying to put in place legislation that has elements of discrimination that are counter to the principles of the WTO, which promotes fair trade," he said.
But he felt confident there would be no need for a complaint to the WTO as there is still time to amend the legislation. - Reuters

如果有兴趣投资棕油业的网友,可以考虑也投资CAROTEC分散风险。石油的价格可以靠减少供应来维持,所以生化能源是有盈利空间的,只要世界各国的政府还是提倡biofuel。 |

biofuel的碳水化合物(CO2)含量还高过diesel,暂时欧洲还没有批准biofuel成为商业用途。第一条件,缩减碳水化合物含量但必须低过diesel,biofuel才能正式被使用。但这是可能发生的。环境

Announcement Details :
1. Introduction
The Board of Directors of Carotech Berhad (“Board”) wishes to announce that the Company had on 13 November 2008 entered into a Biodiesel Supply Agreement with Trafigura Beheer BV, Amsterdam (“Trafigura”) for the supply of refined and distilled palm biodiesel under the tradename of “CaroDiesel®” to USA and Europe. (“Supply Agreement”).
Under the terms of the Supply Agreement, Carotech will supply Trafigura with 60,000 metric tonnes (“MT”) to 84,000 MT of its biodiesel product or equivalent to 5,000 MT to 7,000 MT monthly, at a price based on a formula at a premium over the crude palm oil (“CPO”) price. The contract period to supply biodiesel for one year begins in January 2009.
The Supply Agreement is valued at up to RM200 million, based on the prevailing CPO price. The first bulk shipment will take place in January 2009.
The Supply Agreement serves to jointly establish a strategic business partnership in the quest to contribute to the reduction of global greenhouse gas emission with the utilisation of sustainable renewable energy like palm biodiesel, and to reduce dependence on fossil fuel.
2. Approval
The Supply Agreement does not require the approval of the shareholders or any other authorities.
3. Information on Trafigura
Based in Switzerland, Trafigura is the world’s third largest independent oil trader and the second largest independent trader in the non-ferrous concentrates market. The company is involved in the sourcing of crude oil, petroleum products including biofuels, metals, metal ores and concentrates for industrial consumers.
In the oil sector, Trafigura has access to over 30 million barrels of storage facilities through a combination of owned terminals under its network and long-term lease agreements with third party oil terminals. It employs approximately 1700 people in 35 countries with access to over US$14 billion in credit facilities and investments in industrial assets around the world of more than US$700 million.
4. Financial Effects
4.1 Share Capital
There is no change in the issued and paid-up capital of Carotech as a result of the Supply Agreement.
4.2 Earnings
The Supply Agreement is expected to contribute positively towards the earnings of Carotech.
4.3 Net Tangible Assets (“NTA”)
The project is expected to enhance the consolidated NTA of the Group.
5. Directors’ and substantial shareholders’ interest
None of the directors and/or substantial shareholders nor persons connected with them, has any interest, direct or indirect, in this Supply Agreement.
6. Statement by Directors
The Board having taken into consideration all aspects of the Supply Agreement is of the opinion that it is in the best interest of the Company.
7. Documents for Inspection
Copy of the Supply Agreement will be made available for inspection at the registered office of Carotech at 121 Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, 30010 Ipoh, Perak Darul Ridzuan during normal office hours on any week day (except public holiday) up to 3 months from the date of this announcement.

(吉隆坡13日讯)超维特(Carotec,0076,自动报价股)与荷兰Trafigura Beheer公司签署一份总值2亿令吉的合约,以在1年内为后者提供介于6万至8万4000吨的生物柴油。
该公司董事经理何树生表示,该公司将于明年1月份起,为Trafigura Beheer按月提供介于5000至7000吨生物柴油。
何树生是在代表该公司出席签约仪式后,向记者作出上述表示。
代表Trafigura Beheer出席签约仪式的是尼古拉斯,而该签约仪式是由我国种植与原产部副部长A柯希南比利见证。
何树生说:“我们期望这份合约可以为公司财年带来显著贡献。”
他披露,目前该公司新厂房的总产能为12万吨,可是该公司目前的产能只介于6万至7万吨。
“由于我们签署了上述合约,将会提高供应量,所以我们已计划在今年杪,将产能全面使用。”
他指出,目前欧洲仍然是最大的生物柴油使用者,该国期望在2020年,所有交通燃油的10%是来自于再生资源。
生物柴油前景依然亮丽
“不过,美国却是全世界最大的生物柴油单一使用者,估计其使用量可在2012年,占市场的19%。”
美国对生物柴油的需求从2004年的每年2500万加仑,增至2007年的4亿5000万加仑。
何树生说:“鉴于全球经济风暴,所以对生物柴油领域来说,2009年是更艰巨的1年。”
“尽管如此,生物柴油的前景依然亮丽,因为欧洲重申将于2015年及2020年,达致让所有交通工具使用5%生物柴油的目标,无法达致的话将遭到处罚。”
此外,欧洲、巴西、中国以及印度纷纷决定以生物柴油来取代介于5至20%的柴油 |

什麼是Carotenoids—類胡蘿蔔素?
植物包含各種色素,他們參與一些重要的功能。在這些色素中,chlorophylls 大部分是綠的;phycobilins 是藍的和紅的,而 carotenoids 則是黃、紅或紫。

家禽為何要使用游離態 xanthophylls
在植物界 xanthophylls 被發現是以脂肪酸酯形式存在。家禽在吸收前會經由消化液作用先予以水解或皂化,這樣腸道才能吸收利用。
在典型的家禽業飼養管理下,家禽消化道功能成熟前即已到達上市體重及大小,所以並不允許家禽有效利用酯化色素。為了促進吸收和達到好的著色效果,需要提供游離態 xanthophylls 而非酯態。所以利用所謂預先消化 ( 皂化 ) 來達到良好的著色效果。
當金盞花粉被用於家禽日糧中,經同化作用後酯化 Lutein 僅含 35 ~ 38%。直到使用皂化萃取物,其含游離 xanthophylls,吸收率高達 90%。
所謂“有效性”是用來確認存在於家禽飼料中小部分游離,生物性可吸收 xanthopylls。產品中游離 xanthophylls 的含量是和體內著色能力有直接相關。有關有效性的主題,Alcosa 由在多年前已主動並贊助許多研究的進行。在墨西哥和其他國家,如在:Texas A&M University , Texas , U.S.A. 另一个医学研究案件。照顾健康的产品
Carotenoids 為一種脂溶性維生素,其包含有β-carotenoids-提升免
疫能力、lycopene-維護心血管健康、lutein / zeaxanthin-維持視力健康,
這三者在結構上相當類似,對人體生理功能上是不可或缺的。然而有
很多因素會影響到carotenoids 的吸收,例如食品的加工方式、烹調的
類型、體質的不同、carotenoids 物理-化學特性、營養和生理形態等,
因而無法有效的達到生物利用率。而測定carotenoids 的生物利用率亦
有許多困難點:缺乏適合、方便可利用的動物模式、因個體不同對生
物利用率的效果亦不同,又或是carotenoids 的消化過程需要油滴將其
包覆,形成微粒體後進入腸道形成乳糜微粒,如此才能通過腸膜進入
淋巴系統使人體吸收(脂溶性物質需透過淋巴才能吸收),然這個過
程是難評估的。因此此研究研發出一體外模式系統,模擬人體腸道:
利用caco-2 細胞結合模擬的胃及腸道腔,觀察並檢測carotenoids 在
腸道及腸細胞中的攝取和輸送,如此可排除其他的影響因子,得
到”bioaccessibility”,亦即排除生物利用率的測定困難點,得到一個較
準確(純被測物)的數據。實驗以樹薯為原料,樹薯中富含微量的維
生素A、鐵和鋅,這些物質與carotenoids 的合成有關,因此可透過測
定這些物質得知人體吸收carotenoids 的狀態;又以枸杞為原料,枸杞
中含豐富的zeaxanthin(zeaxanthin-esters: 632.9 μg/g),因此亦可藉由
在模擬腸道的模式系統中觀測zeaxanthin 的吸收及運輸過程,以利了
解carotenoids 在人體中合成與代謝的過程。 |
