RM200 mln to start work on Mukah airport immediately
By Conny Banji
MUKAH: Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud announced that the state government was granted RM200 million by the federal government for the construction of a new airport here.
“The airport is one that can be used by Boeing 737. It will be somewhere between Mukah and Oya. We have been given RM200 million to start work on it straight away,” he said.
According to him, the amount was part of the RM2 billion from the federal government under the Ninth Malaysia Plan (9MP).
Taib was speaking when launching the groundbreaking ceremony for a new government office complex at Service Road here yesterday. His deputies Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang and Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam, State Secretary Datuk Amar Wilson Baya Dandot, State Legislative Assembly Speaker Dato Sri Mohd Asfia Awang Nassar, and Urban Development and Tourism Minister Datuk Michael Manyin Jawong were among those who attended the function.
The building which is adjacent to Wisma Pehin Setia Raja will house the District Office, state government departments, Sesco office and office of the Regional Corridor Development Authority (Recoda).
The total gross floor area of the building is 21,500 square metres.
The main design feature is the traditional Melanau ‘terendak’ (head gear) for the roof over the central core of the building.
The terendak is augmented by four small domes at four corners of the building.
The main office building is five-storey high and six-storey at the central part.
The contractor is Juara Cahaya Sdn Bhd which based in Kepong, Kuala Lumpur.
Touching on the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE), Taib said in 20 years to come the state would need a total of RM60 billion of investment in infrastructure.
Only with this amount would SCORE become what it should be according to plan.
“But the RM60 billion is small compared to the more then RM300 billion worth of foreign and private investments that will enable SCORE to exploit most of its resources which otherwise would not be exploited because of uncoordinated development,” he said.
Taib went on to say that the state has planted nearly 100,000 hectares of trees for the production of pulp.
For this, he said, work on a pulp factory in Tatau will start this year.
“Because of the good income from our planted forests and our potential to produce electricity, we will build four more pulp factories, probably one each in Baram, Baleh, Mukah and Betong or other areas,” he said.
As for Sibu, he said the town will be the maintenance, engineering and financial base for SCORE.
Later, Taib, accompanied by Juara Cahaya director Elly Zalilah Yusuf, performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the new office complex.

如果只是下737的机型还好,不然的话在mukah建这么大的机场根本就是浪费钱,连古晋,美里的机场都没什么航线,还可期望木胶的有什么航线吗...

Works on airport terminal extension to start soon: Wong
By Raymond Tan
SIBU: Works on the extension of Sibu Airport terminal costing RM150 million will start soon.
Revealing this at the installation of Sibu SUPP Town Service Centre at Kingwood Hotel on Monday, Second Finance Minister and Minister of Public Health and Environment Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh said this was a project that had been planned by the Sibu Visionary development Team led by him.
He said the team had listed out 10 construction projects and 32 other projects to upgrade the town, and the airport terminal extension was one of them.
“While most of the others have been accomplished, the airport extension is one of the few that we are still working on.”
He said the extension project, once completed, would be a pride of the town.
“The extended airport will be larger than those in Miri and Bintulu. It will have environment and community user-friendly features.”
He said his team members, particularly Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Robert Lau and Lanang MP Datuk Tiong Thai King, had lobbied hard for the project.
On the eight-bridge road to Tanjung Manis, he said this was another harder-to-come-by project they had been working on.
“Works have already begun.”
He said as more development projects were accomplished, the people have begun to see further and demand for more.
“This is a good thing because we all look for better life and high living standard.”
Wong said the people’s three wishes here were the settlement of their land lease renewal, flood mitigation and education for their children.
“The land problem has been partially solved. We are still working on the rest.”
For flood mitigation plan, he said the Department of Drainage and Irrigation was working on it too.
“They cannot immediately solve the problems, but they have identified the need to improve the 11 major drains in the town to flush out extra water during heavy downpour.”
He said they had also identified certain problems in the works, like water in low-lying areas, which was lower than the level of the river water, and therefore not easy to drain out.
Wong said they would also start raising the roads as one of the immediate flood mitigation plans.
For the Chinese education, he said more fund would be channeled to the sector.
He said he would meet the management board members of Chinese schools to look into their needs.
“The people must see the fair challenges of all Malaysians, and never to fall into the trap of the opposition parties.”
He said SUPP would not get themselves caught in their war of words because if they did, they would too fall into their trap.
“We shall instead spend our time working with the people to accomplish their wishes.”
He said what the opposition did was just making statements, “but, for us, we want action done”.
He said his visionary development team also wanted to create more job and economic opportunities for the people and this town.
“That is why we are aggressively promoting tourism by launching Visit Sibu Year.”
He was happy that their efforts had attracted the Pandaw Cruise in carrying out the Rejang River Cruise.
“I have just received an e-mail from the Scottish company, saying response to their tour launch was so overwhelming that 1,400 tourists made up mainly of Americans and Europeans had signed up for the adventure package. The river cruise will begin on July 1.”
He said tourism was one of the best investments during economic hard times because it would help to create job and economic opportunities for the people.
