Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse has edged closer to a move to Anzhi after refusing to wear the Magpies jersey next season in a row over their new sponsors.
Cisse is a top target for Russian giants Anzhi who are already believed to have failed with an initial opening offer of around £14million.
Newcastle insist the striker will be staying at St James’ Park, but his future has been clouded by a row over new shirt sponsor Wonga.
The pay-day loan firm have agreed a bumper deal to have their name on the Newcastle shirt next season, but Cisse disagrees with the promotion of the company on ‘religious and ethical grounds’.
The 28-year-old, who is a devout Muslim, is just one of a handful of players to raise concern about Wonga, with Cheick Tiote and Hatem Ben Arfa also upset at the sponsorship.
Wonga have become controversial for their high interest loan policy, that sees them offering short-term cash with an APR of over 4000%.
Sharia law states that Muslims are not allowed to benefit from lending or receiving money from other person.
Newcastle have a good record of catering for different religious needed, having recently installed a prayer room, but it’s thought they are yet to reach a compromise with Cisse.
If no agreement can be reached, the deal is likely to push Cisse closer to the Newcastle exit door, with reports in Russia claiming Anzhi are set to return with a £17million bid soon.
