LG explains that the Nexus 4 LTE chip is actually a dud

The presence of an 4G LTE chip in the LG Nexus 4 has been making owners of the device scratch their head and giving them hope that it might eventually be hacked to work.


The revelation made by iFixit's teardown of the device has made a lot of buzz around the web and an LG spokesperson has stepped up to explain the situation.
Here's what he told Techradar.

In order to provide the best possible specification for Nexus 4, LG utilised the same powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset as can be found in its 4G LTE product, namely LG Optimus G.
This powerful chipset is only available with a combined processor and modem and cannot be implemented separately.

The LG representative goes on to explaining that the 4G functionality cannot be obtained just by adding the necessary software. That's because the Nexus 4 is missing "essential hardware parts" such as a signal amplifier and filter.
While this may be disappointing to a lot of Nexus 4 owners, the latest Google smartphone has been proven and tested to work in 4G LTE mode on Canadian networks. So is there something LG is not telling us?

雖然 Nexus 4 表明不支援 4G LTE 功能，不過早前被網民發現 Nexus 4 內裝有 4G LTE 芯片，而且能在有限的網絡中使用，事件令不少人懷疑 Google 為什麼要局限這功能，而且難免讓人猜測與 LG Optimus G 有關，近日 LG 終於就這方面作出回應指「要使用當中的 4G LTE 芯片需要額外的硬件配合，才能啟動當中的功能，而 LG 已經為大家準備了高效能的智能手機 Optimus G，備有 4G LTE 功能，而 Nexus 4 只是讓大家能在 3G 市場體驗 Optimus G 強大硬件功能的智能手機，是 Optimus G 的另一選擇，避免直接競爭。」好了，現在有兩個問題，首先大家會因 4G 功能改買 Optimus G 嗎？另外，到底是誰提攜了誰呢？

那個是WiMax的說
現在商用化的4G標準包括WiMax,HSPA+和LTE
其實當初ITU（國際電信聯盟）建議的4G標準高得多，可是後來最先商用化的WiMax運營商一直用4G打廣告，所以一些競爭者（準備當中的LTE）就放話說這些運營商欺騙消費者，說這個只是pre-4G 或者 quasi-4G （前4G或者準4G），可是後來的3GPP-LTE現實環境測試出來的速度也達不到ITU心目中的4G速度，LTE一方也沒有話說了，所以ITU索性降低他們原本訂的4G標準，結果HSPA+也被認可為4G了，Nexus 4也稱得上4G電話了

馬來西亞的WiMax牌照已經頒給四家公司，其中兩家我們經常聽到yes 4G 和 P1 W1Max，之前有另外一家AMAX的，我家附近都看得到他們掛的廣告橫幅，可是後來好像消失了
另外一家說是政府讓他們在東馬運營，但是我也沒有看過他們的蹤跡

Nexus 4 and USB-on-the-go are no-go

Despite Google mentioning USB-on-the-go functionality for the Nexus 4 in the manual, the phone actually fails to connect to any peripheral, not only storage drives.
It can't be hooked to a keyboard and mouse either, unlike the limited USB OTG support of the Nexus 7, for instance. The Analogix SlimPort ANX7808 that we have on the Nexus 4 certainly supports OTG, as the port specs clearly say: "USB host, device or OTG data passes through by default."

Thus USB-on-the-go might be something that LG and Google could theoretically unleash with a software update, but why is it left out from the initial firmware seems to be a bit of a head-scratcher.
