Xenoport (XNPT) Perplexes Shareholders


Up first this morning is the controversial Xenoport, Inc. (XNPT) http://www.xenoport.com/ currently trading in the $8.66 range on a 3-Month average daily trading volume of nearly 3 million shares. XNPT was trading in the $18 range a year ago and set a pretty solid floor for most of 09; trading between $16 and $20 with a few dips down to $14-$16 and a few spikes into the $22 to $24+ range. In mid-Feb 2010, XNPT dropped from $20 to $6 and has climbed back to its current level. XNPT has a 52-week high of $25.42 set on 09-17-09.

XNPT is a head scratcher. The Company in 09 was trading along a somewhat normal path for a Pharmaceutical. After a 2nd delay in late Feb 2010 of its restless leg syndrome drug Horizant. The stock dropped like a rock. Horizant is a partnership-drug with giant GlaxoSmithKline. The FDA said it was delaying approval. This week, XNPT said it is cutting half of its staff and eliminating drug discovery work in order to save money as it prepares to focus solely on drugs already in clinical testing. XNPT will be eliminating about 110 jobs. It expects the cutbacks to save about $15.6 million per year.

The perplexing issue for shareholders is what to do? Aggregate? Get out? Some analysts correctly point out that even though the shares have plunged 60% in a month, the other XNPT drug in mid-stage studies (for the treatment acid reflux) if approved could be a ‘game changer’ for the Company, but that XNPT doesn’t have a very deep pipeline. For my two cents worth, even though there are now a lot of short-sellers in the float, and of course considering the price an investor bought the stock and each investors own risk profile, it would make common sense to ‘Hold’ XNPT and see what happens for the near-term (3 Mo). Pharma’s have always been tricky. On the Up-side; both primary drug candidates get approved in 2010 and the stock soars back to its high. On the downside; neither drug gets approved and the shares plummet. Now is the time when management at XNPT needs to really ‘communicate’ with its shareholders. Some weekly postings from the CEO and CFO on its web site could do no harm: ‘This is where we’re at’. This is where confidence, trust and a little reassurance go a long, long way.

OccuLogix Inc. (TEAR)- Shares of OccuLogix Inc. were on fire Thursday after the companyreleased positive news. The stock sold off after hitting the $4.05morning high. I will be a buyer if Occulogix Inc broke through $4.05 onFriday.

TerreStar Corporation (TSTR)- Shares of TerreStar Corporation shot up on Thursday but there was nonews out. This looks like a short covering event. I would be a buyer ofTerreStar Corp if the stock closed above the 200 day moving averagelocated at $1.23.

Zanett Inc. (ZANE)- Shares of Zanett Inc. shot through resistance of $3.14 on Thursdayand ran a little bit. Zanett now has resistance located at $3.37 &$3.57. Support is located at $2.75

Cyclacel Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (CYCC)- Everyone should be watching Cyclacel Pharmaceuticals right now. Thestock has shown major resistance at $3.00 over the past 2 months. Thecompany is presenting at a Roth conference on Monday. Anything positiveout of the conference will cause Cyclacel stock to spike.

Cell Therapeutics, Inc. (CTIC)- Shares of Cell Therapeutics, Inc. bounced off the support level of$0.98 on Thursday. This level must continue to hold or I feel that CellTherapeutics could retest the $0.80's. Resistance is located at $1.25.

SIRIUS XM Radio Inc. (SIRI)- Shares of SIRIUS XM Radio continue to drift around on very lowvolume. Sirius XM Radio won't move higher unless additional positivenews comes out from the company or on an upgrade. Support must hold at$0.82 or SIRI could fall even further.

DryShips, Inc. (DRYS)- Shares of Dryships Inc are showing some major buy signals right now.I would wait to buy Dryships until it closes above $6.20. This has beena major resistance level over the last 3 months.
