Proposed Plaza Merdeka expected to draw more people to city centre
THE proposed Plaza Merdeka, if fully operational, is expected to make the surrounding areas vibrant once again and draw more people back to Kuching City Centre.
Located in the heart of Kuching’s central business district and tourist area, Plaza Merdeka is a shopping mall together with a boutique business and hotels within a classical building facade design by renowned architect Yolanda David Reyes from the Philippines.
The site proper is bound by Pearl Street to the south, Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg to the east, Kai Joo Lane to the west and the historic Old Courthouse Complex to the north.
Plaza Merdeka Holdings Sdn Bhd is the main owner of the project.

Its managing director Steven Ng said the project would house five-and-a-half level modern, state-of-the-art shopping mall and 290 hotel rooms.
“Our intention of implementing this project is to draw people to the area and make the surrounding areas more vibrant than before.
“We believed it will be a shopping drag in the City Centre and assist businesses around the area, especially those trading along the India Street,” he told StarMetro after a briefing with the Merchants Association of Kuching City Centre and India Street in Kuching yesterday.
Ng said they were targeting the middle income group to shop at the malls while its hotel would adopt a “value concept brand” - pay a budget hotel rate but enjoy five-star facilities and services.
He said the shopping area would be located on B1, Ground and Levels 1 to 4, adding that Level 4 would also house the hotel’s function halls, coffee house and 17 guest rooms.
He said Level 5 to 11 (seven floors) would house the rest of the 273 guest rooms.

Shaping up: Works in progress.
Ng expressed confident that the project could be completed by 2012, saying that the estimated date of completion for the shopping mall itself was in the first quarter of 2012.
Bina Puri Construction Sdn Bhd, a fully owned subsidiary of Bina Puri Holdings Bhd, is the main the contractor of the project.
Ng said there would be two levels of parking with a total of 800 plus parking bays at Basement 2 and 3 while within 100 meters from Plaza Merdeka is the government-owned Saujana Car Park with 300 parking bays.
The estimated gross development value of the project is RM350mil.

Assurance to merchants
MERCHANTS in the Kuching city centre and India Street are assured that their business interests will always be in consideration during the construction of Plaza Merdeka, a new shopping mall.
Plaza Merdeka Holdings Sdn Bhd managing director Steven Ng said his company would work closely with the Merchants Association of Kuching City Centre and India Street to ensure a win-win situation for the two parties.
The company has had several briefings with the association on the upcoming construction to hear their views and concerns, he said.
“From the briefing, we will do our best to address the concerns raised by the merchants and take precautionary and rectification measures for our mutual benefit,” he told StarMetro after another briefing in Kuching yesterday.
The briefing was on the construction of a storm drain behind India Street and Kai Joo Lane bordering the project site.
The association’s committee members were assured that the developer and contractor had agreed to their request to delay the construction of a tunnel through Jalan Courthouse to the Kuching Waterfront until the Raya festival in September was over.

Ng said the decision to delay the construction was made after considering the business interests of the merchants.
“The fasting month is a peak period for businesses because people, especially Muslims, do their Hari Raya shopping. The contractor has assured that the project will have minimal impact on the merchants’ businesses during the fasting month,” he said.
Plaza Merdeka Holdings Sdn Bhd is the main owner of the project while Bina Puri Construction Sdn Bhd, a fully-owned subsidiary of Bina Puri Holdings Bhd, is the main contractor.
The estimated date of completion for the mall is the first quarter of 2012.
