　　（古晋5日讯）原订于本月13日前往民都鲁为砂拉越中区发展走廊主持推展礼的首相拿督斯里阿都拉改变行程，只在古晋进行工作访问。

　　在古晋期间，首相将于当天下午为耗资一亿令吉的砂拉越回教大厦主持奠基礼。

　　首席部长公署（回教事务）助理部长拿督道勿阿都拉曼证实这项消息。

　　砂拉越回教大厦高17楼，将在明年初动工兴建，地点是在现有的砂拉越回教理事会。

　　拟议中的大厦也将成为商业与办公大楼，同时也将拥有一座可容纳2000人的大厦礼堂。

95%医疗设备经到位 砂医药中心明年启用

        （本报古晋14日讯）砂拉越医药中心兴建工程已完成超过90％，预计在2008年就能正式投入医疗服务。

        奥地利健康、家庭、青年部长安丽雅柯多斯基博士及奥地利驻大马与汶莱华大使多纳杜斯克博士今日率领团队前往砂拉越医药中心参观。

        目前,砂医药中心95％的医疗设备已经备妥，唯有等待室内装潢完成及准备就绪就能安装。其余完成测试和调试过程的仪器包括资讯科技设施等。

        奥地利部长前往砂医药参观主要是配合Vamed组织成立25周年纪念及Vamed Engineering（马来西亚）有限公司20周年纪念。除了砂医药中心之外，Vamed组织也广泛的分布马来西亚各地.

砂医药中心将与姐妹中心诺玛专科医药中心携手为市民提供服务，组成互补性服务，为市民提供更广泛和更广泛的治疗和服务。

首航吸引180名乘客 亚航今古晋飞澳门

        （本报古晋14日讯）亚航首度推出，即将在明日首航起飞的古晋澳门直航首航吸引超过180名乘客的不俗反映。

        亚航推出古晋澳门每周3趟直航航班，首日航班定在下午3时40分启程，傍晚7时25分抵达澳门。为配合15日首航，澳门政府旅游办事处将于明日为首航乘客提供意外惊喜，赠送礼品与澳门旅游资讯予搭客。

        澳门政府旅游办事处今日发表文告表示，澳门政府旅游办事处为配合亚航推出古晋澳门首航举办一系列宣传活动吸引大马游客，包括于今日假旅游大厦举办的“体验澳门”旅游促销。

        同时，当局也计划携带旅行社及媒体随同，以介绍与推广澳门旅游产品予群众。

        根据澳门驻大马旅游办事处表示，古晋将是未来东马区的市场增长主要枢纽，因此，亚航古晋澳门首航除了带领更多大马游客前往澳门旅游，澳门返古晋也增加澳门、香港及中国南部游客前来大马旅游。

        此项新服务再度提升澳门成为区域及中国南部的重要枢纽。

        澳门政府旅游办事处是一个政府组织，扮演宣传澳门旅游，与本地旅游领域单位协调角色，当局也扮演着拟定与实行本地旅游政策，提供旅游相关准证。

空手道世界杯云集40国4000高手 09年首次古晋举行

        （本报古晋28日讯）朝日空手道公会主办的2009年第18届空手道世界杯，将有40个国家多达4000名顶尖高手云集古晋，展开一场场龙争虎斗！

        朝日空手道公会会长兼筹委主席陈浩於今日召开新闻发布会指出，空手道世界杯续2001年在沙巴举行之后，这是破天荒首次在古晋举行，并将於州团结体育馆掀开战幔。

        他提到为了准备2009年第18届空手道世界杯，神户大阪（Kobe Osaka）国际空手道联盟会长兼世界空手道联合会裁判主席汤米摩里师傅最近到访古晋，并已圆满结束其考察。这期间，他到访了砂拉越会议中心、州团结体育馆、州体育馆、古晋希尔顿酒店、独立广场酒和州图书馆。

明年先办一项锦标赛

        此外，汤米摩里斯於昨日也拜访副首长拿督巴丁宜丹斯里陈康南，并讨论赛事，包括地点、入境签证、技术问题等。据悉，届时本市提供1000间酒店房间，以应付2009年空手道世界杯。

        汤米摩里斯今日於新闻发布会上也表示，对於2009年空手道世界杯的赛事感到信心，同时也要感谢各界的支持，使到赛事的筹备工作顺利展开。

        另外，筹委主席陈浩也计划明年主办国际空手道锦标赛，将从3月21日至23日假州团结体育馆与州图书馆举行。届时，预料有来自亚洲和澳洲的15个国家参与赛事，开放给9岁至35岁选手参与。

Naim's New Riveria Square Project To Be Ready In Two Years


KUCHING, Dec 15 (Bernama) -- Sarawak-based property developer Naim Cendera Sdn Bhd, is expected to complete the first phase of commercial development on its new Riveria Square project within two years.

Sales director Tony Lau said Saturday the project, involving a combination of residential and commercial properties with infrastructure and public amenities, strategically located in the interchange between Kuching and Samarahan divisions, is expected to be the gateway to a well developed higher education, medical and technology hub for the state.

"The first phase consists of 29 units of three- and four-storey shophouses, and early birds will get to enjoy introductory prices ranging from RM718,888 per unit onwards," he told reporters at the launch of the Riveria Square project at Wisma Naim here.

Riveria Square commerical units provide business opportunities from supermarkets, food courts, furnishing and offices to alfresco coffee bars and fast food franchises.

So far, about 40 percent of the 900 Riveria Square residential units, with prices ranging from RM230,000 per units, were now ready for occupancy while the response from house buyers had been overwhelming due to the quality and value-for-money price tags, he added.

The project is within the proximity of Universiti Teknologi Mara, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, Sarawak State Education Resource Centre, Industrial Training Institute and the proposed Sarawak International Medical Centre.

Naim Cendera, a public-listed company, is also undertaking projects in Bandar Baru Permy Jaya in Miri and Desa Ilmu in Kota Samarahan.

£29.6 million eco venue will boast plenary for 1,500 delegates

Construction is underway on the new 200 million ringgit (£29.6 million) Borneo Convention Centre Kuching. The centre is being developed on a six hectare riverfront site in the capital of Sarawak, Kuching. The Centre will form part of a new marina, shopping mall and hotel development on the greenfield site known as The Isthmus.

The new centre’s environmentally conscious design is inspired by the surrounding rainforest jungle. The roof structure is shaped in the form of a “ririg” leaf, a rainforest plant which plays an important daily role in the local indigenous cultures.

Rainwater will automatically be channeled down the central vein of the leaf on the rooftop and collected for irrigation through a sub-surface ecological drainage system.

The roof canopy is supported by a series of exposed structural elements resembling the trunks and branches of rainforest trees. Design and construction advice is being provided by PG Consulting.

Capacities in the centre include 1,500 delegates in plenary mode, a 2,000 capacity banquet hall and 14 breakout meetings rooms. A separate ballroom will accommodate 850 for a banquet. The largest pillar free exhibition space is 2,500 square metres. Car parking for 800 vehicles is provided.

The centre will have wireless internet access in public areas and provide simultaneous interpretation facilities in four languages.

Construction is now underway and on schedule with an expected opening date in May 2009.

The State Government of Sarawak will appoint an operator in early 2008 and together with the Sarawak Convention Bureau, the new Borneo Convention Centre Kuching will market the venue nationally and internationally to attract business events to Sarawak.

New development to rise in Satok



KUCHING: Satok is a prime area in Kuching city that has seen much growth over the years. In the coming years, more developments will rise, particularly the upcoming River Edge Commercial Development (RECD) by developer Kumpulan Properties Sdn Bhd with Parade Pavilion Sdn Bhd as its main contractor.
Covering over ten acres of land, RECD aims to be the new business, entertainment and residential urban hub centred at Satok. KUCHING: The renowned Satok Sunday Market will be relocated to a new site at a cost of RM35 million, said Housing Minister Dato Sri Abang Haji Johari Tun Abang Haji Openg.

He said the project, to be funded by the Federal Government, would be implemented by the Federal Agriculture Marketing Authority (FAMA).

“What we are doing is to make Kuching City a vibrant tourism and financial hub. So the new Satok market will enhance our tourism sector and, at the same time, improve the environment, especially the Bintangor River which is very polluted by the present Satok Sunday Market,” Johari told the media after a closed-door meeting with PBB Satok Branch leaders at a leading hotel here yesterday.

He said the present site was no longer conducive as it would congest the road and pollute the Sg Bintangor, which flows into the Sarawak River.

“We will turn Kuching into an eco-tourism centre, bringing tourists to Muara Tebas by river cruise. This will attract more tourists to come here,” said Johari,   a former Tourism Minister.

He added that Chief Minister Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud had envisioned that Kuching city would become a major logistic hub, with the proposed Kuching Sentral (Kuching Intergrated Regional Bus Terminal), located just five minutes’ drive from the Kuching International Airport.

Johari, who is also the State Assemblyman for Satok, said some RM20 million had been utilised to improve the conditions of Sg Bintangor.  

“Another RM2 million will be used to improve the landscaping of the river banks, which will enhance the beauty of the whole area,” she said.

He said Satok, which lies in the heart of the city, had seen vast transformation over the years.

“Some RM100 million has been pumped into Satok area alone in recent months. The Islamic Centre, which is currently under construction, will be a new landmark in the area in the future,” he said.

On another issue, Johari said the Satok State Constituency, which is part of the Petra Jaya Parliamentary Constituency, would be playing its part so that Barisan Nasional would retain the seat.

“Satok, Tupong and Samariang State Constituencies, which are under the Petra Jaya Parliamentary Constituency will work harder to ensure the incumbent, Fadillah Yusof not only win but with a bigger majority,” he added.

Unimas to have six new buildings

KUCHING: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) will be expanding its campus soon to accommodate its increasing students.

The university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Khairuddin Abdul Hamid said  the RM690m Phase II expansion project would see the construction of six new buildings. The project, to be carried out under the Ninth Malaysia Plan, will be launched soon.

He was speaking at a high tea organised by Unimas Alumni. During the event, Khairuddin unveiled the logo of the association. Unimas has existed for more than 10 years and  is one of the most better known  universities in Malaysia.

The function yesterday was the first activity to be organised by Unimas Alumni after a lapse of a few years.

Those present discussed the importance of the alumni.

Also present were Prof Madya Dr. Abdul Mutalip Abdullah and other Unimas Alumni members.

Kuching races away with Interhash event

Kuching-based Hornbill Hash House Harriers will host the next World Interhash.  The Sarawak Rainforest Interhash 2010 will be held 02-04 July 2010 and is expected to attract more than 5,000 participants to Kuching.

The biennial Inter-hash started in 1978 with Hong Kong being the first site.

The event is expected to be a tourism bonanza for Kuching injecting around RM 18 million into the economy.  

Organisers have timed the event just prior to the World Rainforest Music Festival, to encourage visitors to extend their stay and explore the rest of Malaysia.

Kuching won by 500 votes from nearest rival Kenya at this year’s Inter-hash event staged in Perth Western Australia. Other bidders included Bali, Indonesia and Kuala Lumpur.

The Sarawak Rainforest Interhash 2010 Bid was funded and supported by the Sarawak Convention Bureau, Sarawak Tourism Board, Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board, Malaysia Airlines and Malaysian Hash Council.

Good start for Malaysia’s first independent convention bureau

Some 24 new meetings with an average size of 320 delegates – and taking place over the next two years – have been secured by the Sarawak Convention Bureau in its inaugural year of operation.

The first independent convention bureau to launch in Malaysia, aiming to attract events to the Borneo state, had presented more than 40 destination bids up until December last year with 24 successes and 10 still pending. The 24 confirmed meetings should bring in 7,775 delegates generating an estimated 2,000 hotel room nights and RM16.3 million in direct delegate expenditure.

“We are very pleased to have achieved a 58% strike rate in our first year of bidding and this augers well for our future growth,” said Sarawak Convention Bureau’s chief executive Jill Henry. “We were pleasantly surprised at our success in converting international and regional events, which actually outnumbered the national wins five to one. So this year we are putting more emphasis on enticing national meeting planners to consider East Malaysia. Last year, we had challenges getting them to consider moving their events around the country rather than regularly staging them in the capital Kuala Lumpur.”

The Bureau also reported that it conducted site inspection visits for 113 meeting planners and association executives from the UK, Europe, Australia, China, Taiwan, Scandinavia, Singapore and Hong Kong, and attended major meeting trade shows to build awareness of Sarawak as a meetings destination. In addition, it assisted the organisers of 13 conventions held in Sarawak last year with marketing and promotion support for delegate boosting to maximise their delegate attendance.

“It is an exciting time for us in Sarawak as we are gearing up for our bigger and better meeting facilities coming on stream over the next few years,” Henry continued. “Top of the list is the RM200 million Borneo Convention Centre Kuching with its 36,000 square metres of floor space due to open in mid 2009. In tandem with the new meeting and exhibition facilities, Kuching will see a doubling of its three, four and five-star room stock by 2010 with the construction of five new hotels.”

Volkswagen 3S centre to be ready in a year

KUCHING: The first Volkswagen 3S (sales, service and spare parts) centre in Asia to incorporate the company’s new corporate image as unveiled in Germany recently, will be opened here next year.

Ismaco Automotive Sdn Bhd is building the RM6 million centre at Jalan Batu Lintang. The cost of the project will include RM5 million for a building, infrastructure, finishings, machinery and equipment.

It would be fully functional in about a year’s time from now. An earth-breaking ceremony was held yesterday to mark the commencement of the project.

Ismaco Group managing director Datuk Ismail Salleh said at the ceremony the 3S Centre marked a major step forward for the Volkswagen brand in Sarawak.

“This is the first full-fledged Volkswagen 3S in Asia to incorporate the latest corporate image of Volkswagen, which was recently announced by Volkswagen, based in Germany, “ he said.

Ismaco is the only Volkswagen dealer in Sarawak. The company officially opened its first Volkswagen showroom at Jalan Tun Jugah Wednesday night with several more planned for other parts of the state in the years to come.

Volkswagen Group Malaysia Sdn Bhd (VGM) deputy managing director Karen Cheng said the opening of the 3S Centre was a milestone for the company.

“Once ready, it will be the first in Malaysia to incorporate Volkswagen’s latest corporate identity design, depicting the values of the new Das Auto brand claim which was unveiled recently.”

Ismaco sees good market for VW cars in S’wak

KUCHING: Ismaco Automative Sdn Bhd strongly believes that the market potential for Volkswagen vehicles in Sarawak is very promising, said its Group managing director Datuk Ismail Salleh.

In showing its confidence in the brand, Ismail said Ismaco Group had invested an estimated RM6 million to set up a Volkswagen 3S Centre in Kuching.

“This is also the first full-fledged VW 3S (sales, service and spare parts) showroom in Asia to incorporate the latest corporate image of Volkswagen,” Ismail said at the earth-breaking ceremony of the centre at Jalan Batu Lintang yesterday.

He also unveiled the model of the centre.

“Sarawak consumers have become more discerning when it comes to buying cars and this is where Ismaco comes in, offering niche and high quality Volkswagen cars,” he said.

Ismail said the company would be introducing brand new Volkswagen cars in Sarawak and they would be backed with a two-year manufacturer’s warranty.

“The current model line is diverse, ranging from the Cross Polo which is selling at RM111,888 nett to the luxurious 4WD Touareg 3.6 V6 which is selling at RM436,888 nett,” he added.

Being a big fan of Volkswagen cars, Ismail said he was confident in their quality. He even owns an old Beetle and still maintains it in tip-top condition.

He urged Volkswagen owners in the state to register their details with Ismaco as it is now preparing the proposal of Volkswagen Club activities, which would include convoy events and exclusive test drive sessions for the new models.

Through this club, Ismail hoped that Ismaco could enhance Volkswagen ownership by allowing the members to exchange the latest news and experiences.

Meanwhile, Ismail told reporters that response to the company’s sales of the Volkswagen cars had been very encouraging.

“We have sold 12 units of Volkswagen cars at our showroom in Jalan Tun Jugah after four months of operations, and we are targeting to sell 30 units every month with the launching of the 3S Centre,” he said.

He expects the New Beetle 1.6 and 2.0 models to contribute about one third of the targeted sales as it was the most popular model here and also the Touareg, in the range of five units a month.

Other models include Passat, Jetta, Polo GTI 1.8, Cross Polo, Golf, Golf GTI 2.0, Golf R32 and Eos.

Asked on expansion plans, Ismail said Ismaco would set up showrooms in Sibu and Miri next year.

Meanwhile, Volkswagen Group Malaysia deputy managing director Karen Cheng said the company had plans to expand to Sabah after appointing Ismaco as its dealer in Sarawak.

“We are now having discussions with several parties in Sabah and will be setting up outlets there after matters are sorted out,” she said.

Cheng said the group presently had 12 outlets in the country, and they sold 750 units of Volkswagen cars last year.

“The fastest selling models are the GTIs which are very iconic models for Malaysians,” said Cheng, adding that all Volkswagen cars were fully imported CBU (complete built unit) from factories all over the world.
