OIL FUTURES: Crude Falls On Profit-Taking; Lingering Unease

SINGAPORE (Dow Jones)--Crude oil futures fell Friday in Asia as traders opted to take profit amid lingering uncertainty if the recent price upswing can be sustained in the face of weak fundamentals.

Oil prices, up nearly 22% so far this year, have climbed steadily in the past week as market participants assumed the key U.S. economy could recover sooner than previously thought, potentially shoring up growth elsewhere and in turn lead to a rebound in global energy demand.

"Oil markets have become a little more optimistic - less pessimistic - about the outlook for the U.S. economy following the release of details of another U.S. government plan to support the financial industry and the release of some marginally better-than-expected U.S. economic data. U.S. equity markets have also risen," said David Moore, a commodity strategist at Commonwealth Bank of Australia.

"(However) we remain skeptical as to whether the current rally in oil prices will be sustained in the June quarter. U.S. oil consumption remains weak and U.S. oil inventories are at a high level."

On the New York Mercantile Exchange, light, sweet crude for delivery in May traded at $53.70 a barrel at 0640 GMT, down 64 cents, or 1.2%, in the Globex electronic session.

Nymex heating oil futures for April slipped 70 points to 147.43 cents a gallon, while April reformulated gasoline blendstock traded at 151.67 cents, 144 points lower.

Nymex crude Thursday spiked briefly to $54.66 a barrel, the highest intraday price in nearly four months, following another strong session on Wall Street that rekindled investors' confidence in the economic outlook.

Still, many oil analysts are urging caution, noting that supply-demand factors remained soft: global oil inventories are staying bloated with near-term fuel demand largely failing to pick up.

"(The past week's) rally was entirely back-end driven, as the focus shifted to future fundamentals following the quantitative easing efforts," analysts at Goldman Sachs, led by Jeffrey Currie, said late Thursday in a weekly report.

"Accordingly, given that this focus on future fundamentals was behind the move from $50 a barrel to $54 a barrel, as opposed to near-term fundamentals, we believe this leaves the market vulnerable to a near-term pullback."

Further evidence that demand may stay thin in coming weeks came from Nippon Oil Corp. (5001.TO), which Friday became the fifth Japanese refining company this week to announce plans to reduce throughput.

Japan's largest refiner by capacity will slash its crude processing volume next month by 23% on year to 3.65 million kiloliters, or just over 765,000 barrels a day.

"Passive investment money still appears to be flowing into the oil complex even as underlying fundamentals appear to be shifting further in a bearish direction," Jim Ritterbusch, president at trading advisory firm Ritterbusch and Associates, said in a note to clients.

"We still feel that rallies to above $55 will prove arduous without major assistance from a further weakening in the dollar or an additional 10%-20% advance in the stock market."

At 0640 GMT, oil prices on London's ICE Futures exchange were mixed.

Brent crude for May fell 51 cents to $52.95 a barrel while April gasoil changed hands at $466.50 a metric ton, chalking up $3.25 from Thursday's settlement.
