Goldman cuts U.S. growth forecast
Friday November 21, 10:52 am ET

(Reuters) - Goldman Sachs on Friday lowered its U.S. growth forecast citing a fiscal policy stagnation, record increase in unemployment and a sharp decline in profits, deepening and extending the expected recession.

Goldman said it now expects U.S. GDP to fall 5 percent in the current quarter, with unemployment rate reaching 9 percent in the fourth quarter of 2009.

It also forecast the 10-year yield to fall to 2.75 percent by the end of the first quarter of 2009, as compared to previously estimated 3.5 percent.

"The combination of weaker real activity and slower inflation means that profits of U.S. companies will fall even more sharply than we had previously expected," Goldman said in a note to clients.

Goldman now sees economic profits falling 25 percent in 2009 on an annual average basis, the biggest drop since 1938. It had earlier expected a fall of 20 percent.

Goldman expects unemployment rates to further go up in 2010 as well, as there is little chance of the economy returning to trend growth by that year.

The GDP growth is expected to fall 3 percent and 1 percent in the next two quarters, bringing the drop in GDP close to the decline seen in 1982, economists at Goldman Sachs said.

"We have marked down our forecasts for US real GDP in response to continuing signs of falling domestic and foreign demand, labor market deterioration, renewed tightening in financial conditions, and an apparent impasse in fiscal policy pending the transfer of power to the Obama administration in late January," economists led by Jan Hatzius said.

Goldman had earlier expected a 3.5 percent fall in GDP for the current quarter and a 2 percent fall and zero growth for the subsequent two quarters.

Although a worsening economy is a major driver of the estimate cuts, the U.S. government's financial policy, which led to the tightening in financial conditions was the main reason for the adjustments, the economists said.

As the economy contracts, inflation pressure has started to ease. "However, we do not expect a broad-based, sustained pattern of significant price decline that would normally be associated with the term 'deflation' over the forecast horizon," they said.

Goldman analysts also said the next round of bailout plan will exceed their earlier estimate of $200 billion.

GM to extend holiday shutdown, may cut production
Friday November 21, 10:35 am ET
By Tom Krisher, AP Auto Writer
General Motors tells workers of more factory cuts, will extend holiday shutdown to Jan. 20

DETROIT (AP) -- General Motors Corp. will extend its holiday shutdown or make other production cuts at up to 10 factories as it deals with a continued U.S. auto sales slump and fights to stay solvent.

The cash-strapped automaker told workers about the cuts on Friday morning, according to local union officials.

Dave Green, president of a United Auto Workers local in Lordstown, Ohio, said workers were told that the normal holiday shutdown will be extended until Jan. 20 at the sprawling factory complex, which stamps parts for and assembles the Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 small cars.

The last scheduled workday will be Dec. 23, although production will start to wind down before that, he said.

Details of the other cuts were not available. GM spokesman Chris Lee would not comment on the announcements.

Green said that after Jan. 20, the Lordstown complex will keep operating around the clock, but assembly line speed will be reduced from the current 62 vehicles per hour to 46.5 vehicles. The Lordstown complex, located about 50 miles southeast of Cleveland, employs about 4,200 production workers.

Earlier this year the company added workers to the plant as demand for its small, fuel-efficient cars increased. But since then the bottom has fallen out of sales industrywide, and GM later announced it would lay off up to 1,100 of the plant's workers starting Jan. 20.

Green said he's optimistic that GM will resume production as scheduled on Jan. 20, although at the slower assembly line speed.

"I think we'll come back, and then if production warrants, or demand wanes, maybe there will be a little more downtime," he said. "It's all driven by the market, so it's really out of our hands."

GM and its Detroit counterparts are seeking billions of dollars in loans from the federal government. Congress is requiring the automakers to come up with plans to become viable before it will decide on the loans.

GM has announced thousands of factory layoffs so far this year and is cutting its salaried staff in order to pare expenses and conserve cash. The company has said it could run out of cash by the end of this year.

In morning trading, shares dipped 7 cents to $2.81.
