All Eyes on Discovery
May 30
At NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, technicians are putting the finishing touches on space shuttle Discovery one day before its scheduled liftoff on mission STS-124. Launch is set for May 31 at 5:02 p.m. EDT.
"After months of hard work and preparation, Discovery and its crew are ready to fly," said NASA Test Director Jeff Spaulding during a morning briefing on Discovery's countdown status. "All of our systems are in great shape, we're tracking no issues, and we're right on schedule for tomorrow's launch."
The weather is looking promising for launch day, according to Shuttle Weather Officer Kathy Winters. Isolated coastal showers may be in the area during the morning hours, but a sea breeze will develop in the afternoon, clearing the coast and causing any showers to move inland. There is an 80 percent chance of favorable weather at launch time.
This mission will carry the largest payload so far to the station and includes three spacewalks. It is the second of three missions that will launch components to complete the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's Kibo laboratory. The crew will install Kibo's large Japanese Pressurized Module and Kibo's robotic arm system. Discovery also will deliver new station crew member Greg Chamitoff and bring back Flight Engineer Garrett Reisman, who will end a three-month stay aboard the outpost. |

NASA's Phoenix Lander Robotic Arm Camera Sees Possible Ice
TUCSON, Ariz.-- Scientists have discovered what may be ice that was exposed when soil was blown away as NASA's Phoenix spacecraft landed on Mars last Sunday, May 25. The possible ice appears in an image the robotic arm camera took underneath the lander, near a footpad.
"We could very well be seeing rock, or we could be seeing exposed ice in the retrorocket blast zone," said Ray Arvidson of Washington University, St. Louis, Mo., co-investigator for the robotic arm. "We'll test the two ideas by getting more data, including color data, from the robotic arm camera. We think that if the hard features are ice, they will become brighter because atmospheric water vapor will collect as new frost on the ice.
"Full confirmation of what we're seeing will come when we excavate and analyze layers in the nearby workspace," Arvidson said.
Testing last night of a Phoenix instrument that bakes and sniffs samples to identify ingredients identified a possible short circuit. This prompted commands for diagnostic steps to be developed and sent to the lander in the next few days. The instrument is the Thermal and Evolved Gas Analyzer. It includes a calorimeter that tracks how much heat is needed to melt or vaporize substances in a sample, plus a mass spectrometer to examine vapors driven off by the heat. The Thursday, May 29, tests recorded electrical behavior consistent with an intermittent short circuit in the spectrometer portion.
"We have developed a strategy to gain a better understanding of this behavior, and we have identified workarounds for some of the possibilities," said William Boynton of the University of Arizona, Tucson, lead scientist for the instrument.
The latest data from the Canadian Space Agency's weather station shows another sunny day at the Phoenix landing site with temperatures holding at minus 30 degrees Celsius (minus 22 degrees Fahrenheit) as the sol's high, and a low of minus 80 degrees Celsius (minus 112 degrees Fahrenheit). The lidar instrument was activated for a 15-minute period just before noon local Mars time, and showed increasing dust in the atmosphere.
"This is the first time lidar technology has been used on the surface of another planet," said the meteorological station's chief engineer, Mike Daly, from MDA in Brampton, Canada. "The team is elated that we are getting such interesting data about the dust dynamics in the atmosphere."
The mission passed a "safe to proceed" review on Thursday evening, meeting criteria to proceed with evaluating and using the science instruments.
"We have evaluated the performance of the spacecraft on the surface and found we're ready to move forward. While we are still investigating instrument performance such as the anomaly on TEGA [Thermal and Evolved Gas Analyzer], the spacecraft's infrastructure has passed its tests and gets a clean bill of health," said David Spencer of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., deputy project manager for Phoenix.
"We're still in the process of checking out our instruments," Phoenix project scientist Leslie Tamppari of JPL said. "The process is designed to be very flexible, to respond to discoveries and issues that come up every day. We're in the process of taking images and getting color information that will help us understand soil properties. This will help us understand where best to first touch the soil and then where and how best to dig."
The Phoenix mission is led by Peter Smith at the University of Arizona with project management at JPL and development partnership at Lockheed Martin, Denver. International contributions come from the Canadian Space Agency; the University of Neuchatel, Switzerland; the universities of Copenhagen and Aarhus, Denmark; Max Planck Institute, Germany; and the Finnish Meteorological Institute.

http://tw.news.yahoo.com/article/url/d/a/080601/16/10dcv.html

http://tw.news.yahoo.com/article/url/d/a/080603/19/10gw1.html

http://tw.news.yahoo.com/article/url/d/a/080603/16/10i1k.html

Delta launch delayed until next week
The planned launch Saturday of a Delta 2 rocket with a NASA astronomical telescope is being pushed back to the middle of next week so engineers can swap out a faulty battery on a system that would be used to destroy the vehicle if it veered off course.
The rocket's Flight Termination System battery failed during routine prelaunch testing Wednesday.
NASA spokesman George Diller said the launch now is being targeted for next Wednesday. A firm date is expected later today. Thye launch window through early August will remain 11:45 a.m. EDT to 1:40 p.m. EDT.
A traditional prelaunch news briefing scheduled for 1 p.m. today is being delayed until Monday.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Largest Station Lab Open
The joined crews of shuttle Discovery and the International Space Station took a playful tour through the newly opened Japanese Kibo science laboratory at the orbital outpost.
Outgoing flight engineer Garrett Reisman rolled up into a human ball and repeatedly flipped through the weightless environment. Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko flew end-to-end through the 37-foot module just like Superman. Some 14 feet in diameter, the lab is so wide that Reisman and Kononenko demonstrated that one could get weightlessly stuck in the middle of the module if not careful.
"This is a great moment for the Japanese folks," said Akihiko Hoshide, a mission specialist with Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency.
Hoshide, 39, hung a sign in front of its hatch enscribed with the Japanese word Kibo, which means "hope." The grand opening comes after a two-decade effort to develop and launch the cornerstone of Japan's contribution to the station project.
"I'd just like to thank all the Japanese folks who have been working very, very hard. I know it's been like 20-plus years to get this module up in space," he added. "It's a beautiful module, and we have a new hope on the space station."
Hoshide floated into the lab around 5:09 p.m. EDT, holding up a sign that said "welcome" in both English and Japanese. Then he flipped it over and on the other side, there was a promotional come-on for JAXA's current astronaut recruiting program. He and mission specialist Karen Nyberg wore protective goggles, surgical masks and ear plugs until they could test the atmosphere inside the lab to make sure the pressure was at the proper level and there were no contaminants in the air.
The interior of the 16-ton cylinder looks empty. It weighs so much that experiment racks had to be hauled up inside a warehouse module that was launched aboard Endeavour in March.
"It looks pretty empty because we don't have a lot of racks inside it (yet)," Hoshide said. "But one engineer said down on Earth, 'It looks empty, but it's full of dreams,' and I really think that's what it is."
The astronauts over the next several days will transfer racks from the logistics module to the lab. Then the smaller logistics modules will be moved from the zenith port of the U.S. Harmony module to a port atop the lab, where it will serve as an attic.
The lab is the second of three major pieces of the Kibo science research lab. A pallet that will serve as a platform for experiments outside the lab will be hauled up aboard Endeavour next March.

Crew fixes station toilet
The International Space Station's primary potty is back up and operating after a Russian cosmonaut-turned-plumber finished an orbital fix-it job.
Station flight engineer Oleg Kononenko removed a faulty urine pump and replaced it with a spare hauled up aboard shuttle Discovery. Enviironmental control and life support system engineers at the Russian Mission Control Center then ran a trio of tests on the repaired potty. The work took about two hours to complete. good airflow quiet operation of pump..
"It's now up and running and available to the crew members on board," NASA flight commentator Rob Navias said from the U.S. Mission Control Center in Houston.
Located in the Russian Zvezda service module -- the core of the Russian segment of the station -- a pump used to collect urine broke aboaut 10 days ago, forcing the station crew to use a potty in the Russian Soyuz spacecraft that serves as an emergency lifeboat at the outpost. The new pump was rushed to Kennedy Space Center from Russia so it could be launched aboard the ongoing mission to deliver and install the Japanese Kibo science laboratory.
The toilet fix was not the only repair work on the station today. Station flight engineer Garrett Reisman and Gregory Chamitoff, the NASA astronaut who will replace him onboard the outpost, repaired a U.S. system that removes carbon dioxide from the station's cabin atmosphere.
Discovery mission specialist Karen Nyberg, meanwhile, has been outfitting the vestibule between the newly arrived Kibo module and its portside berthing port on the U.S. Harmony module. The outfitting work will set the stage for the grand opening of the Kibo module around 4:52 p.m. EDT today.

http://tw.news.yahoo.com/article/url/d/a/080607/19/10rrv.html

http://tw.news.yahoo.com/article/url/d/a/080607/78/10r5x.html

http://realtime.zaobao.com/2008/06/080608_28.shtml

http://news.xinhuanet.com/tech/2008-06/09/content_8328611.htm

http://news.bbc.co.uk/chinese/si ... 7441400/7441400.stm
(The Moon Lightweight Interior and Telecoms Experiment,简称 MoonLITE)的计划2013年实现。

http://www.zaobao.com/sp/sp080611_508.shtml
AeroCareer.sg举行推介仪式。

STS-124 Landing Ground Tracks, 1st Opportunity

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Missing rudder clip no problem; Discovery plans 11:15 AM landing
After an unnecessary metal clip floated loose and provided a brief Friday the 13th fright, Discovery was cleared for an 11:15 a.m. EDT Saturday landing at Kennedy Space Center.
"We have determined the vehicle is completely safe," Mission Management Team Chairman LeRoy Cain said.
The 2.5-inch by 1-inch, V-shaped metal clip protects the rudder from the heat of the engines only during ascent. The metal clips are routinely lost and have even been found on the runway after landing, said Cain. Another perceived problem with an insulation blanket vanished when engineers on the ground realized Discovery's crew was viewing the blanket from an odd angle. Cain added that Discovery's thermal protection system was cleared for re-entry.
With a favorable weather forecast, NASA hopes Discovery will fire its engines at 10:10 a.m. EDT to begin re-entry for an 11:15 a.m. landing at Kennedy Space Center.
Discovery comes home with flight engineer Garrett Reisman, a scientist and baseball fan who has spent three months at the International Space Station.
"I'm looking forward to sleeping in my own bed and using my own toilet," said Reisman, who added that he hoped his stature would help him re-adjust to being in gravity. "I've been waiting my whole life and, finally, being short is going to come in handy."
Performing three successful spacewalks, the crew delivered a 35-pound toilet pump and a 32,500-pound Japanese laboratory module to the station.
"We have a big lab of our own," said proud Japanese astronaut Akihiko Hoshide, the first to enter the 37-foot Kibo module. "This is just the beginning."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Missing clip no danger to crew
The object floating away from Discovery was identified as a spring clip used to hold the rudder insulation during ascent.
An apparent rudder insulation protrusion is simply a "trailing edge splitline barrier."
"Its function is for ascent heating only," said capsule communicator Terry Virts. "We're confident there is no impact for entry."
Shuttles since STS-1 have been coming back without the clips, said Virts.
Discovery's steering jets and wing and rudder steering surfaces passed a checkout this morning in preparation for Saturday's 11:15 a.m. landing at Kennedy Space Center, where the weather looks good.
The object that floated away from Discovery was apparently one of three thermal clips inside the rudder speed brake and holds insulation on the rudder. The protrusion is not in an area that gets extremely hot during re-entry.
On their last day in space, Discovery's crew will stow equipment and prepare Garrett Reisman's recumbent seat for re-entry. Reisman has spent three months at the International Space Station.
Including the 37-foot Japanese Kibo laboratory and a 35-pound Russian toilet pump, Discovery left 34,914 pounds of cargo at the station and returns with just 2,258 pounds of cargo and trash. The space station now has the volume of a 747 jet and weighs 612,000 pounds.
NASA plans to launch ten more shuttles before the program ends in 2010. The next launch is scheduled for October.

NASA names new spacesuit builder
NASA today gave a contract to a Houston company to build the spacesuits that the agency would use when astronauts return to the moon.
After the financial markets closed for the day, the space agency announced Oceaneering International Inc. of Houston would be responsible for designing, developing and manufacturing the suits for the Constellation program. The deal is worth at least $183 million and extends from this year through 2014, with options to extend and expand contract.
They are the first new suits in decades for the space agency. In the image above, you can see two configurations for the prototype suit. The first (white) is for launch, entry and intravehicular activity and the second (blue) is for spacewalking work on the lunar surface. Below is an image of astronauts, engineers and scientists testing prototype suits during an exercise at Lake Moses in Washington.

Tile looks safe; Pad 39A to be fixed
Mission Management Team Chairman LeRoy Cain said preliminary reports indicate Discovery's thermal protection system is safe for re-entry.
"The team's not worried about anything as it relates to the (thermal protection system)," said Cain at a press briefing today.
A final assessment will be made Friday. Cain also said NASA was making a plan to fix the damaged area in the flame trench at Pad 39A. Analysis showed that the bricks will not fly up and damage the shuttle.
"We don't have a debris risk," Cain said.
About 5,300 bricks were blown out of a wall in the flame trench during the May 31 launch of Discovery. Cain said NASA managers feel that part of the epoxy might not have adhered. A spray-on repair is being considered.
NASA managers will approve the final repair plan at a meeting on June 26. An Oct. 8 launch will not be delayed.
"We believe we've got more than ample time," said Cain.
Today, the crew stowed the inspection boom and the shuttle robot arm and enjoyed off time. Friday, the crew will stow equipment for an 11:15 a.m. EDT landing at Kennedy Space Center, where the weather is looking promising.
"Our Japanese partners are very happy and proud, as they should be," said Cain.
NASA plans to launch ten more shuttles before the program ends in 2010. The next launch is scheduled for October.

Liftoff! Delta 2 rockets away from Cape
Liftoff!
The Delta 2 Heavy and NASA's newest space telescope are on their way.
Liftoff came at 12:05 p.m. The space telescope is slated to be deployed 75 minutes after launch.

NASA's new scope now on orbit

A $690 million mission to explore the most extreme environments in the universe is getting under way in earnest.
NASA's Gamma-ray Large Area Telescope -- GLAST -- is now circling Earth in its intended orbit 301 miles above the planet after a successful launch aboard a United Launch Alliance Delta 2 rocket.
The 13-story Delta 2 Heavy blasted off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station at 12:05 p.m. -- 20 minutes later than planned because of some minor trouble at an Atlantic Ocean tracking station. The 10,000-pound spacecraft separated from the second stage of the Delta 2 after a 75-minute ride into orbit.
"It's on its way," said NASA launch commentator George Diller.
The observatory will explore a violent universe where stars explode, galaxies collide and supermassive black holes spew brilliant jets of gas at light speeds. Equipped with advanced electronics and super-sensitive detectors, the spacecraft wsill be the most powerful to probe cosmic phenomena that create almost inconceivable amounts of energy invisible to the naked eye.

http://tw.news.yahoo.com/article/url/d/a/080614/19/1186o.html
