Speed up cable car project, says MP

Junaidi banks on project for future job opportunities

KUCHING: Member of Parliament for Santubong Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar would like the cable car project up the legendary Gunung Santubong to be expedited.

THINKING BIG: Junaidi gestures during a live radio interview with CatsFM.

He said he would be setting up an appointment with the company undertaking the project to discuss, amongst other things, the progress of the project and employment of people from the Santubong area and to improve the socio-economy of the area.

This is because both human capital and economic development will be part of his five-year plan, if he is nominated again for Santubong in the coming general elections.

“I would like to have my input as the Member of Parliament into this project as I do not want the project to be delayed, and I also want the people of Santubong to be employed such as manning the station,” he told reporters after a live radio interview with CatsFM at its headquarters in Jalan Bako here.

The proposed RM50 million cable car project was announced last May, and would be undertaken by Santubong Cable Car Sdn Bhd. The detachable mono-cable system will have 8-seater gondolas that could climb to a height of 769 metres from the base station located at the foothill of the mountain near the Sarawak Cultural Village.

Upon completion, the Santubong cable car system will be the third in the country after Genting and Langkawi.

Junaidi also said that he had plan for a large-scale entrepreneurship workshop for the youths in his constituency; in a quest to develop 2,000 entrepreneurs if he were re-nominated and re-elected as the MP.

“The Bumiputeras in my constituency need to realise the vast potential and business opportunities of this area, where we can indulge in new economic activities such as sport-fishing, tourism and food-processing industry,” he said.

He added that the paradigm shift needed to take place among the constituents, who were still having “rural mentality” despite living in an increasingly urban setting, especially the Bako and Pantai Damai areas under the jurisdiction of Kuching City North Commission (DBKU).

“The farmers and fishermen in the constituency need to diversify their activities, and they cannot totally depend on money made from belacan (prawn paste) and ikan masin (salted fish).

“If everybody is to market and produce the same products, how are they able to make more money,” he asked.

Earlier, during the radio interview with CatsFM presenter Mohd Kamarulzaman Bakeri, he said he would leave it to the Barisan Nasional’s top leadership to decide whether to nominate him again for Santubong.

He nonetheless told listeners to vote BN, no matter who was chosen for Santubong.

“Whoever the BN chooses to be the candidate for Santubong, vote that person because only BN is the right choice for the people. BN has a proven track record in administrating Malaysia and Sarawak, and our economic vibrancy and stability have put us in a respectable position in the region,” he said.

He also talked about his achievements and challenges as the MP for Santubong since switching from Batang Lupar in the 2004 general elections.

He singled out winning the Santubong seat with the biggest majority of more than 10,000 votes as “the sweetest and historic moment”.

“Since then, I feel indebted to the massive support given by the people here, and I pledge to do my very best in serving the constituency,” he said, adding that he had managed to get nine community halls and four surau completed within two years.

He also said that he was not the type of politician who liked to make promises during elections for the sake of political mileage.

“I even told the people who campaigned for me not to make promises of this and that. I rather let actions speak louder than words,” he said.

He said Santubong was “a very unique constituency”, and different from his former constituency, Batang Lupar, which is largely a rural-based area.

“There are two main industries taking place here. In the beach lines of Santubong, Pantai Damai, Sematan and Pandan, we have the tourism industry, and in the Sama Jaya Industrial Area we have the high-tech industries,” he said.
