No plan to build LRT system in Kuching

KUALA LUMPUR: The government has no plans to build a Light Rail Transit (LRT) system in Kuching, the Dewan Negara was told yesterday.
Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Liew Vui Keong, said the construction of the urban rail public transportation system was only suitable for a city with a population of at least 1.5 million people.
“The government is determined to improve the public transportation service in the country, such as the trains, buses and taxis, for the convenience of the people.
“However, it is important for the government to identify the suitable public transportation system to be used in the city first, based on its population density and development planning.
“So far, the government has no plan to provide LRT service in Kuching,” he said in reply to Senator Doris Brodie during question time.
Liew noted that for a city or a town with a moderate population or having less than 1.4 million people, an efficient bus service would be provided for the convenience of the residents.
Kuching, despite being the fourth largest city in the country, currently has a population of 630,000 people.
However, Liew said, the proposal to build an LRT system in Sarawak might be reviewed when the Public Land Transport Commission (SPAD) offices are opened in Sabah and Sarawak next year.
At present, all aspects of public transportation in Sabah and Sarawak are supervised and monitored by the Commercial Vehicles Licencing Board (CVLB), even though the CVLB has been abolished on the peninsula following the establishment of SPAD after the SPAD Act 2010 came into force early this year.
“I’m confident that SPAD’s presence in Sabah and Sarawak will solve many public transportation-related issues, including the proposed LRT system in Kuching,” he added. — Bernama 電車，像香港的那樣？
