Silk Airline

No sign of life where Brazilian jet crashed
No sign of life where Brazilian jet crashed
By Cesar Bianconi
BRASILIA, Brazil (Reuters) - Military searchers parachuted down on Saturday to the wreckage of a Brazilian passenger plane that crashed a day earlier in remote Amazon jungle with 155 people on board.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said there was no sign of survivors.
If the death toll is confirmed, it will be the worst aviation accident in Brazil's history.
Brazil's military suspended the search and rescue mission as dusk set in the thick forested area and will resume it Sunday morning.
"At night in the Amazon you can't see beyond a foot in front of you," said Brigadier Antonio Gomes Leite Filho of Brazil's air force at a news conference.
Earlier in the day, the two soldiers who rappelled from a helicopter into the area were cutting down dense jungle to make a helicopter landing area and authorities had recruited Indian trackers to find a path to the remote jungle crash site for relief teams. Previously, a statement by authorities implied that the soldiers had parachuted into the area.
"All rational logic shows there is a high probability that a collision occurred," Infraero head Brigadier Jose Carlos Pereira told reporters.
The small size of the wreckage area indicated that the chances of survivors among the 149 passengers and six crew members on board were slim.
Gol officials said there were 113 men and 42 women on board, including an 11-month-old boy and four children. The airline said there were only about half a dozen foreigners on the flight, though the company didn't disclose their nationalities.
"Imagine the velocity at which it hit the ground coming from an altitude of 36,000 feet (11,000 meters)," Pereira told reporters. "It's very unlikely that there will be survivors."
Authorities lost radar contact with Gol flight 1907 on Friday afternoon during its journey from the principal Amazon city of Manaus to the capital Brasilia, the airline said.
Search planes found the crash site in Mato Grosso state, about 1,000 km northwest of Brasilia.
DISTRAUGHT FAMILIES
Friends and relatives, many wearing dark sunglasses and hugging and crying, gathered on the patio of a hotel in Brasilia waiting for details. Most could not utter more than one word before bursting into tears.
"Gol ... would not say if there might be any survivors," Robson Barreto said as he waited for news on his 29-year-old nephew Rafael who was a passenger.
Denise Abreu, director of civil aviation authority ANAC, said signs indicated there had been a mid-air collision with a smaller jet, which landed safely.
Embraer aircraft manufacturer said one of its executive jets, a Legacy 600 owned and operated by a client, had been involved in a collision and made an emergency landing at Cachimbo air force base with five passengers on board. No injuries were reported.
The Gol plane had been received new from Boeing on Sept. 12 and had only 234 flight hours, the company said.
Until now, the worst air disaster in Brazilian history was the June 1982 crash of a Vasp flight which hit a mountain near Fortaleza in northeastern Brazil, killing 137 people.

Airbus chief resigns, successor named
PARIS (AP): Airbus chief executive Christian Streiff resigned after a little more than three months as head of the troubled European plane maker, and parent company EADS named one of its own co-CEOs to replace him.
European Aeronautic Defence and Space Co. said in a statement Monday that Louis Gallois will succeed Streiff in the top job at Airbus while continuing in his current role as joint head of the Franco-German defense group.
Streiff's departure deals a fresh blow to crisis-hit Airbus. The plane maker, which stunned investors in June by doubling the A380 superjumbo's production delay to one year, doubled it again this month to two years and said the holdups would wipe a total of euro4.8 billion (US$6.1 billion) off EADS profits over four years.
Streiff took over as Airbus CEO just over three months ago, replacing Gustav Humbert, who was ousted along with EADS co-CEO Noel Forgeard as a result of the A380 production crisis.
The 52-year-old former Saint-Gobain executive drew up a cost-cutting turnaround plan for Airbus that enjoyed strong support from EADS directors, but he clashed repeatedly with the board over how the plan should be implemented and how much control he would personally exercise, according to three officials familiar with the discussions.
Streiff wanted to report to the parent company every quarter and have final say on Airbus appointments, while senior EADS executives demanded closer oversight, according to the officials, who asked not to be named because the discussions were confidential.
In an interview for Tuesday's edition of the French daily Le Figaro, Streiff said he had not been allowed the "necessary operational powers'' to do the job effectively and welcomed as "a step in the right direction'' the combination of the Airbus and EADS roles for Gallois.
Since the creation of EADS in 2000, Airbus managers have answered to a separate chief executive at the parent company as well as their own. The A380 production delays, which came to management's attention only belatedly, have been blamed in part on the blurred reporting lines between EADS and its civil jet unit.
Those lines should be clearer as a result of the changes announced Monday. EADS' German co-CEO Tom Enders will no longer have direct managerial responsibility for Airbus, the statement said -- leaving Gallois as sole boss. EADS owns 80 percent of Airbus and is tightening up supervision of the civil jet unit as it acquires the remaining 20 percent from Britain's BAE Systems PLC.
"If my successor doesn't have enough elbow room, and if the governance of Airbus doesn't evolve, then yes, the company's future is worrying,'' Streiff warned.
Streiff upset the delicate political balance underpinning EADS and unnerved German politicians and trade unions by suggesting that work on the A380 could be transferred to France from Germany and the A350 XWB -- a planned rival to Boeing's 787 -- could also be built in France.
The German government has suggested it may take a stake in EADS if carmaker DaimlerChrysler AG pares its own 22.5 percent holding. "We must prevent everything from going the way of the French,'' German Defense Minister Franz Josef Jung was quoted as saying Monday by weekly Der Spiegel.
After concentrating massive resources on the superjumbo, Airbus was taken by surprise by Boeing's two-engine 787, which delivers better fuel economy than older four-engined Airbus jets in the same size category -- a sales argument that has grown more persuasive with higher fuel prices.
The gap is widening fast. Airbus took orders for 226 jets through Sept. 30, the Toulouse, France-based aircraft maker said Monday, compared with the 723 net orders announced by Boeing for the year to Oct. 3.
Earlier Monday, Gallois met with French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin and Finance Minister Thierry Breton, and a spokesman for President Jacques Chirac said the head of state was following the situation closely. Restructuring at Airbus is on the agenda for Thursday's Franco-German summit, when Chirac and Chancellor Angela Merkel are to meet in Paris.
Shares in European Aeronautic Defence and Space Co. closed 1.3 percent lower at euro20.16 (US$25.41) in Paris ahead of the announcement.

STEREO Solar Observatories Launching Aboard Delta II on Oct. 25
Launch of NASA's STEREO spacecraft is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 25, aboard a Boeing Delta II rocket from Pad 17-B at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla. The launch window is 8:38 to 8:53 p.m. EDT. Should the launch be postponed for 24 hours for any reason, the launch window is 8:26 to 8:41 p.m. EDT, or for a 48-hour postponement, 8:32 to 8:47 p.m. EDT.
STEREO consists of two spacecraft that together comprise the first mission to take measurements of the sun and solar wind in 3-D. This new view will improve our understanding of space weather and its impact on the Earth.
During the two-year mission, the nearly identical spacecraft will explore the origin, evolution and interplanetary consequences of coronal mass ejections, the most violent explosions in our solar system. When directed at Earth, these billion-ton eruptions can disrupt satellites, radio communications and power systems. In addition, energetic particles associated with these solar eruptions are hazardous to scientific spacecraft and astronauts.
Truly an international effort, many portions of the STEREO instruments were provided by the United States, the United Kingdom and several European countries. The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, in Laurel, Md., designed and built the spacecraft and will operate the twin observatories for NASA during the mission. NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., is responsible for the project management. The NASA Launch Services Program at Kennedy Space Center and Boeing Expendable Launch Systems are responsible for the launch.

Pilot project to stimulate minds of young children
Pilot project to stimulate minds of young children
PUTRAJAYA: A pilot project to enhance young children’s skills and mental development will be launched next year with a RM20mil government allocation.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the Cabinet approved the concept, billed the Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC), that stimulates the creativity, imagination and interests of children up to six years old.
“The concept has proven successful in several countries; and the children there were also found to be more emotionally mature,” he told reporters yesterday after chairing a meeting with mentris besar and chief ministers.
“We will set up the centres in all states and different environment, such as rural areas, estates, towns and cities with children from different socio-economic backgrounds to test the programme’s effectiveness.”
Najib said a committee chaired by him would implement the programme, and the panel members would include prominent women such as Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia vice chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Sharifah Hapsah Syed Hasan Shahabudin and Universiti Malaya vice-chancellor Datuk Rafiah Salim.
“The idea to introduce the ECEC came from my wife (Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor) who had discussed the matter at length with a group which expressed their concern over current social problems,” he added.
On another matter, Najib said he had relayed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s reminder to all state governments to give full cooperation towards the implementation of projects.
“The Federal Government has asked the state governments to provide appropriate land in terms of quality and location so that additional expenditure need not be incurred,” he added.
The Deputy Prime Minister also said that telecommunications companies must widen their coverage and not just concentrate on places with high usage.
“We want the Energy, Water and Communications Ministry to direct telcos to improve their services and increase their coverage to make mobile phone network service available throughout the country,” he said, adding that there were still blind spots in rural areas and Felda.

"Silent Aircraft" Designed By Scientists
AP) A U.S.-British team of researchers from academia and the aerospace industry believes the passenger aircraft of the distant future will not only be fuel-efficient, but virtually silent.
Leaders of a long-range research venture called the "Silent Aircraft Initiative" were scheduled Monday to release a conceptual design for a plane they say could cut through the air with practically no sound bothering those below, thanks to its unique shape and design features to limit engine noise.
The design adds a new twist to aviation's long history of mixed success developing flying wings designed to be more fuel- and space-efficient than conventional aircraft with long, narrow fuselages.
The design, to be announced in a news conference at the Royal Aeronautical Society in London, would blend fuselage and wings together so that the entire airframe provides lift - an approach that to date has been confined largely to payload-carrying military aircraft such as long-range bombers.
The body shape of the "silent aircraft" would allow for a slower landing approach and takeoff to cut airport noise - a form of environmental pollution that makes it politically unpopular to expand airports and flight schedules.
"The 'silent aircraft' can help address this concern and thus aid in meeting the increasing passenger demand for air transport," said Edward Greitzer, and professor of aeronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Even if he's right, don't expect to see - or hear - such a plane anytime soon. The project is aimed at establishing research knowledge that could lead to development of an aircraft by 2030. And whether such a plane could become a commercial success is anybody's guess.
But the project, led by researchers at Cambridge, Mass.-based MIT and Cambridge University in England, has plenty of commercial interest so far. The two universities say more than 30 aviation companies from around the world participated in the design, including aircraft maker Boeing Co. and engine maker Rolls-Royce PLC.
Rolls-Royce wouldn't participate if the project didn't have potential to help shape future aircraft design, said Martin Brodie, a spokesman for the London-based company.
"We have a very strong record of involvement in environmental programs anyway, so this is just a logical thing for us to get involved in," Brodie said. "This is really a clear-blue-sky thing for the moment, and we'll have to wait to see what develops."
More than 40 researchers from MIT and Cambridge as well as engineers from the 30 companies have been collaborating on the design since the project's launch three years ago. Funding has come largely from the British government's Department of Trade and Industry, which committed money seven years ago to establish the Cambridge-MIT Institute, a joint venture between the schools that also has worked on other projects.
For now, the aviation project's goal is not to produce a marketable aircraft.
"The goal was to find out what technologies would be required, and what an aircraft would look like if a step-change in noise reduction was one of the key drivers for design," said Zoltan Spakovszky, an MIT aeronautics professor and a chief engineer on the project.
One aspect of the plane's sound-reducing design eliminates flaps - hinged sections on the rear of each wing - to reduce a major source of noise as the plane cuts through the air at takeoff and landing.
To reduce sound reaching the ground, the jet engines would be embedded into the plane's body, rather than hung from the wings as on conventional airliners. The engines would have variable-size jet nozzles, allowing slower jet propulsion during takeoff and landing but efficient cruising at higher speeds.
The proposed plane is designed to carry 215 passengers and achieve fuel efficiency of 124 passenger-miles per gallon.
By comparison, Boeing's 787 Dreamliner, a fuel-efficient airliner due for delivery in 2008, is expected to achieve 100 passenger-miles per gallon on a typical flight, Boeing spokesman Adam Morgan said.

Question: Above "Silent Aircraft / ( SA )" wasn't gonna built by Boeing as B787? b4 now the new plane replaced it bcos cost saving & technology advanced until most airport can't fit 2 this SA size?

Death of a Spacecraft: The Unknown Fate of Cassini
By David Powell

The Cassini spacecraft is roughly halfway through its looping voyage of the Saturn system and is continuing to return a bounty of data on the ringed planet and its moons. Yet all journeys must have an end and Cassini's eventual fate is now being discussed.
"Current planning is for a two year mission extension that ends on July 1, 2010," said Robert Mitchell, NASA's Cassini mission program manager. "However, presuming that the spacecraft continues to function well, it's reasonable to expect that one or more further extensions will be supported."
Sometime around 2012, Cassini, like the ocean-going ships of old, will need to be decommissioned. However, the spacecraft cannot be towed to some nearby shore to be dismantled; she must either drop anchor, be scuttled, or cast off her gravitational moorings altogether.
"Perhaps the most likely option is to leave Cassini in a long-lived orbit that would have little to no risk of ever hitting anything," Mitchell said. "Another is to impact Saturn like Galileo did at Jupiter, although there are some complications with this one."
The complications arise from the beautiful wafer-thin rings that girdle the planet and the fact that in order to dive into Saturn, Cassini would have to pass through them—a risky maneuver that could render the spacecraft uncontrollable.
Crash landing?
"Another option is to identify one of Saturn's icy moons as an acceptable candidate and impact the spacecraft onto it," Mitchell said.
Yet this option also holds an inherent risk arising from the three plutonium bearing Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators (RTGs) Cassini uses as a power source.
"The issue is the heat that would be generated by the RTGs and the environment that would be created (melted ice) that could be conducive to the viability of any Earth organisms that might have survived on the spacecraft to that point," says Mitchell.
Mission planners make great effort not to contaminate alien worlds with terrestrial life.
The third option: raise anchor and escape the Saturn system altogether. Such a maneuver would require numerous flybys of Saturn's largest moon Titan to sling the spacecraft free of the ringed planet's environs.
If Cassini were to be cut adrift in this manner, her controllers have two further choices: either bring her sunward or let her escape deeper into the outer solar system.
Many options
Should Cassini be directed back toward the inner solar system it is likely her final port of call would be Jupiter, Mitchell explained, "One possibility is to escape Saturn and then most likely put the spacecraft on an impacting trajectory with Jupiter. This appears to be feasible, but the flight times get to be rather long."
Cassini's leisurely final journey need not end at Jupiter; rather the giant planet's gravity could fling Cassini into position for an impact on Mercury. Such an impact would provide valuable data on the composition of Mercury's surface and could feasibly occur around 2021 to be observed by the BepiColombo spacecraft.
Alternatively, if Cassini were cast into the solar system's outer depths there is a small chance she may provide further scientific reward in the form of a flyby of an outer planet or Kuiper Belt object.
"Some very preliminary analysis indicates that this might be possible. However, the flight times involved and the status of spacecraft consumables at that time make anything like this quite an unlikely option," says Mitchell.
NASA is to make the final decision on Cassini's eventual fate later in the mission.
