Peggy Whitson is welcomed to earth after a mission duringwhich she conducted five spacewalks and set a new record in Americanspaceflight.
After a one-hour re-entry, outgoingspace station Commander Peggy Whitson (in AP photo above), cosmonautYuri Malenchenko and Korean spaceflight participant, So-Yeon Yi, havereturned to Earth, landing in Kazakhstan far off target.
"The good news is that the crew is OK," NASA commentator Rob Navias said.
"Crew members are reported in good spirits as well as in good health," added NASA commentator John Ira Petty.
The steeper than normal landing path subjected the crew to up the 10 times the force of gravity. U.S.flight surgeons are on the scene examining the crew. Russian spaceagency officials said the cause of the off-target landing would beinvestigated.
TheSoyuz landed about 295 miles short of its landing zone, delaying therecovery by about 45 minutes. The cause of the missed target was asteeper than anticipated re-entry angle, called a ballistic re-entry.Malenchenko called mission control with a satellite phone to saythe crew was well.
There had been at least two similar landings, Expedition 6 and Expedition 15.
One of the helicopters stationed along the projected landing zone quickly found the capsule. (Seen in the AP photo below).
Whitsonand Malenchenko, who spent 190 days in space, must begin physicalrehabilitation. Yi returns after a nine-day stay and will not feelserious effects of prolonged microgravity.
Aparachute deployed to slow the final descent, and rockets fired whenthe capsule was just a few feet above ground, cushioning the contactwith the ground.
Afterher latest six-month stay, Whitson has a total of 377 days in space, arecord for U.S. astronauts. On four flights, Malenchenko has more than500 days in orbit. Malenchenko and Whitson blasted off Oct. 10, 2007.

http://tw.news.yahoo.com/article/url/d/a/080419/19/xl12.html

http://tw.news.yahoo.com/article/url/d/a/080420/2/xmx7.html

No more funds for space programme
By IZATUN SHARI
KUALA LUMPUR: The Government will have to look for money if it wants to proceed with the next phase of the space programme, said Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Maximus J. Ongkili.
He said in principle the Government wanted to pursue the next phase of the programme subject to funds available.
"Under the midterm review, I can say that there is zero money. If we want to proceed with the second phase we have to look for money," he told reporters Monday after the launch of the Creativity and Innovation Day 2008 celebrations at KL Tower here.
"So far, I am waiting for the results of an analysis report from the International Space Station on its costs and benefits before I go to my Cabinet colleagues for guidance and we can consider looking for money for the programme."
He reiterated that the space programme should not be viewed only in terms of sending angkasawan into space but also in terms of research undertaken involving other sciences besides astronomy.
He said the ministry would also have to consider other competing priorities particularly social development needs.
Asked when he expected to obtain the findings of the analysis report, Ongkili said: "I should be able to answer questions relating to the matter in Parliament by next week.
"We have to get fair views on the matter. I will use the opportunity to get views from MPs to see what they think of the programme," he added.
The first phase of the programme where angkasawan Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Sheikh Shukor and two other astronauts blasted into space in a Russian Soyuz 11 rocket from Baikonour, Kazakhstan, on Oct 10 last year was partly funded by the offset purchase of Sukhoi SU30MKM fighter jets from the Russian Government.
Ongkili also said the National Science Centre would be corporatised before the end of the year to give the division autonomy to make its own decisions.
"Under the midterm review, we want to look at this. Within the next six months we should be ready with the blueprint." |

No cause has yet been determined for a second off-target, ballistic Soyuz landing in a row.
Teams from NASA and the Russian space agency will shortly begin investigating the cause of the apparent re-entry system failure.
"It's going to take several days for them to get (the capsule) back to Moscow," said NASA spokesman Nicole Cloutier. "It does have a flight recorder."
On Saturday, a Soyuz capsule carrying U.S. astronaut Peggy Whitson, cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko and South Korea spaceflight participant, So-Yeon Yi, had a technical problem and fell to Earth like a rock, landing some 260 miles off course. The landing came after a steeper-than normal re-entry caused the crew to endure dangerous forces 10 times that of gravity and twice the normal re-entry pressure.
A Soyuz spacecraft automatically makes a ballistic re-entry if its guidance systems fails. Cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko confirmed that the craft automatically made the switch to the emergency re-entry system, but he could not say why.
"There was no action of the crew that led to this," Malenchenko
said. "Time will tell what went wrong."
Though tough on the crew, a ballistic re-entry is relatively safe, said U.S. space station program manager Mike Suffredini. A similar
re-entry affected the last Soyuz return in October 2007, which carried two cosmonauts and a Malaysian space tourist.
There has been no talk of grounding the Soyuz fleet.
"It's still a functional spacecraft. The incidents don't rise to
the level of requiring a stand down," said James Oberg, an authority on the Russian and Chinese launch systems and consultant for NBC News.
The Russians are preparing to increase their launch rate from two
per year to four per year to provide for a six-person crew on the expanded space station in 2009. Oberg questioned whether the production increase is responsible.
"Has doubling the production overstressed their production safety
and quality?" he asked. |

Work to mate the external tank and the solid rocket boosters went well last week.
Processing work is ahead of schedule, so space shuttle Discovery's rollover to the Vehicle Assembly Building will be moved up a second day to Saturday at 8 a.m.
The rollover had been scheduled for April 28. After a launch delay of nearly a week because bad weather delayed the arrival of the external tank, Discovery is scheduled to launch May 31 on a mission to the International Space Station.
The shuttle will deliver a 35,000-pound laboratory module, the second section of a Japanese laboratory complex. |

NASA: one to three months for Soyuz answer
NASA expects to wait one to three months for an answer to why a Soyuz space capsule dropped to Earth like a rock in an emergency landing, which might have been a repeat of a problem experienced during the last Soyuz re-entry.
The Soyuz that landed early Saturday had at least three problems: a possible repeat of a shorted hand controller cable that caused the capsule to go into emergency landing mode, a separation problem - perhaps a failed explosive bolt - with the final stages of the capsule and smoke in the cabin, which cleared when cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko turned off the display lights.
NASA associate administrator Bill Gerstenmaier said the Russians have appointed a commission to investigate the incident. He expressed confidence the commission would learn why the Soyuz landed 260 miles off target after causing the crew to experience twice the normal forces of re-entry. However, U.S. astronaut Peggy Whitson, cosmonaut Malenchenko and South Korea spaceflight participant, So-Yeon Yi, have been reported in good condition.
"They are doing everything we would do. We will get good results from this," said Gerstenmaier. "We share data back and forth."
He would not speculate on what the troubling second emergency landing in a row could mean for the U.S. space program, which will rely on Soyuz capsules to transport crews to and from the space station when the shuttle stops flying in 2010.
"We need to just get through this investigation, and see what it implies about the future." |

http://www.chinapress.com.my/con ... mp;art=0424wf35.txt

Did a short circuit cause spacecraft's steep descent?
http://space.newscientist.com/ar ... -steep-descent.html
The cause of a Russian spacecraft's fiery descent back to Earth on Saturday is still unknown, but investigators suspect an electrical short circuit or the delayed detachment of a propulsion module might be to blame, NASA's space operations director Bill Gerstenmaier said on Tuesday.
On 19 April, the Soyuz TMA-11 automatically switched to a "ballistic" re-entry mode while returning to Earth. This is a backup mode involving a steeper than normal trajectory; it exposes the crew to up to 10 times the force of gravity on Earth during descent.
On board the spacecraft were South Korea's first astronaut, So-yeon Yi, and space veterans Yuri Malenchenko and Peggy Whitson.
Mission controllers in Moscow lost radio contact with the capsule for about an hour during the descent and as a result were initially unaware that the ballistic re-entry mode had been triggered, or that the capsule had landed some 475 kilometres (295 miles) short of its target.
Saturday's ballistic re-entry is the second in a row for the Soyuz spacecraft and the third since 2003.
In a teleconference with reporters on Tuesday, Gerstenmaier downplayed reports of danger to the crew and urged patience as a commission set up by the Russian Federal Space Agency investigated the issue. "We don't see this as a major problem, but it's clearly something that should not have occurred," Gerstenmaier said. "We don't like to see things repeat on two flights."
Electrical short
Russia's Interfax news agency quoted an unidentified Russian space official as saying that the Soyuz capsule suffered significant heat damage and that the crew was in serious danger during descent. But Gerstenmaier said he was unaware of any such statements being made. "The Russian folks have not told me any of that," he said. "They're concerned about the event, but the relative danger to the crew – we've had no discussion on that at all."
The initial suspect for the problem is a cable that connects the control panel in the crew capsule to descent hardware on the Soyuz. An electrical short in the cable can automatically trigger the ballistic re-entry mode.
Such a short is suspected to have caused the ballistic re-entry experienced by a Soyuz spacecraft in October 2007.
Wrong orientation
Investigators of the earlier Soyuz TMA-10 mishap also found evidence of a delay in the detachment of a propulsion module from the capsule. If the module does not detach from the crew capsule as planned before hitting the Earth's atmosphere, it changes the weight distribution of the spacecraft, potentially causing the crew capsule to descend to Earth in the wrong orientation.
Initial reports from the crew of Soyuz TMA-11 suggests a similar detachment delay occurred during Saturday's re-entry. Russian investigators are exploring the possibility that the two events are linked, but Gerstenmaier cautioned against jumping to conclusions.
"That's not the right leap to make yet," he said. "Let the Russians go ahead and get the data, analyse and understand what they've got and then we can talk about where we are."
Critical time
The Soyuz mishaps come at a particularly crucial time for NASA. The agency is preparing to retire its shuttle fleet in 2010 and the replacement Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV) will not be ready until 2015.
During the five-year gap, the Russian Soyuz will be the primary vehicle for shuttling crew to and from the International Space Station.
Gerstenmaier said it is too early to speculate how the recent accidents will affect NASA's future, but hinted that the agency would consider commercial launch options if necessary.
"We don't have the luxury or the funding to go ahead and continue multiple launch systems," Gerstenmaier said. "We'll work as hard as we can to get our CEV or get a commercial crew transportation capability online as soon as we can." |

Whitson's parents describe landing-day tension

http://www.floridatoday.com/apps/pbcs.dll/section?category=news02
The Des Moines Register has a nice story today detailing Peggy Whitson's parents' experience when the Soyuz spacecraft bringing the astronaut back to Earth went off course and could not be found for almost an hour. Here's the introduction to the piece, which you can read in full by clicking the link at the end of the post.
Beth and Keith Whitson were up at 3 in the morning to watch their daughter's return from space.
They put on the coffee, turned on NASA's television station and waited. Way too long.
Peggy Whitson (pictured above above after recovery, courtesy NASA) had been living and working on the International Space Station nearly six months, but the last half hour was the toughest for this Ringgold County farm couple.
"She was supposed to land at 3:37, and it was after 4 before they confirmed that they had landed in Kazakhstan and we knew they were OK," said Beth. |
