Why Pep Guardiola should come to Manchester United: He is the man to reinvigorate the club's attacking flair and will relish the challenge set by history
One of the greatest aspects of Pep Guardiola as a coach is his ability to build squads that fit his vision and playing style. At Barcelona, he knew exactly who he didn't need, selling Ronaldinho, Deco and Gianluca Zambrotta. Then, when he succeeded Jupp Heynckes at Bayern Munich, despite inheriting a squad brimming with talent and title-winning quality, he added Thiago Alcantara, knowing that he was the type of player who could act as a creative hub in the centre of the pitch. Indeed, Thiago - after overcoming his injury woes - has established himself as one of the smoothest operators in the Bundesliga and a player us, as Manchester United fans, wish we could have signed in 2013 when he followed Guardiola to the Allianz Arena.
We need Guardiola at Old Trafford. It's not just that we want him - we do, obviously - it's that we need him. Louis van Gaal was always just the three-year overseer of transition, but unfortunately, it's been a less than smooth process. One can't help but think that, given ￡250million to spend, Guardiola would create and mould one of the greatest teams in living memory.
The war chest available to Van Gaal has not facilitated an era of thrilling, attacking football littered with world class stars readying to become Manchester United legends. With Guardiola's considerable tactical and player-management nous at the helm, United would ultimately return to the top of not only the Premier League, but European football in general. Guardiola has said that he has always wanted to manage in England and experience the football and culture of the country. We already know that Sir Alex Ferguson held tentative discussions with Guardiola about managing United while the latter was taking his sabbatical in New York, so he knows about the history and prestige of the club - he must know that, under him, Manchester United could be truly great again.
With Guardiola's brand of football, United can genuinely achieve the dominance craved by Van Gaal. The difference between Van Gaal and Pep is that, although both styles of play prioritise possession, Guardiola's teams thrill and excite the fans and most crucially, score goals. Although Guardiola isn't overly-attracted by money, he would have the funds and freedom to build a world-class United squad and write one of the most exhilarating chapters into this club's illustrious history. Manchester City is tempting, yes, but deep down, one feels that Guardiola is attracted to the idea of reinvigorating Sir Alex Ferguson's legacy. United is the right choice for him and the club.
