Motormouth Dave Whelan says Fenway Sports Group have made an offer to Roberto Martinez to become Liverpool's new manager.
According to the Wigan chairman, Martinez is 'considering' the offer which will alarm the majority of Liverpool supporters who want to see someone with experience recruited.
While we've been expecting it, few actually wanted to accept it was possibly going to become reality.
"I have just spoken to Roberto," said Whelan. "He went yesterday to Miami and had a very constructive meeting with the owner of Liverpool.
"They're going to talk again on Tuesday. They've made Roberto an offer and he has agreed to consider it.
"He is also aware that I have said 'I'd love to keep you but I need a decision by Wednesday or Thursday of next week'.
"If we lose him we've got to move and appoint someone for Wigan Athletic.
"In the meeting I think they've made him an offer and he's said 'what are my responsibilities'.
"These are American owners and the rules and regulations are a bit different from what we English set down.
"Roberto is a seven days a week, 12 hours a day worker and I don't know whether they realise how hard he works.
"He has rules and regulations to be fully in charge of football and I know he won't move anywhere unless he is fully in charge of the football.
"I think he's considering it and I think he'll give it fair consideration."
If Martinez takes the job, we will of course be behind him. But we're not going to lie and say we're happy about it. While it is true that great managers have to start somewhere, the last thing Liverpool need right now is a student.
It's a huge gamble and the sacking of Dalglish makes no sense to us now. It would have been a gamble retaining the King but a like-for-like scenario swap is bizarre in our opinion and completely stinks.
What also concerns us is the amount of dialogue that Martinez is reporting back to Wigan. While he needs to keep his existing chairman informed of developments, he doesn't need to relay every bit of private and confidential information to him.
ANDRE VILLAS-BOA SNUBBED AFTER ANGRY LIVERPOOL FANS' REVOLT
ANDRE VILLAS-BOAS has told pals he has ‘no chance’ of getting the Liverpool job.
The Portuguese coach, sacked by Chelsea in March, held talks with the Reds earlier this month about replacing sacked Kenny Dalglish in the Anfield dugout.
But after being installed as the bookies’ favourite to assume the Kop reins, Villas-Boas, 34, has dropped down the pecking order in the last 24 hours.
And with Liverpool seemingly now intent on luring Roberto Martinez from Wigan instead, AVB is resigned to missing out on what he considered a great opportunity to repair his damaged reputation.
A source close to the ex-Porto boss said: “Andre doesn’t think he’s got a chance of being offered the Liverpool job any more. That’s what he is saying to friends.
“He really wanted it – so he’s very disappointed. But he will now look to find another club.”
Villas-Boas arrived at Stamford Bridge last summer hailed as one of the brightest, most forward-thinking coaches in Europe.
That stemmed from his remarkable success with Porto, where he won four trophies, including the Europa League, in his one and only season there.
But AVB found life at Chelsea a great deal tougher, especially when he fell out with a number of the club’s senior stars, including Frank Lampard.
And a disastrous run of league form, which ultimately cost the Blues a top-four place, led to Roman Abramovich firing him following a 1-0 defeat at West Brom.
Villas-Boas’ advisors later put his name forward to the Liverpool board as the best man to bring back the glory days to the club.
However, while initially convinced he would be asked to fill the vacancy, AVB has since realised that is not likely to happen. And that seems down to a backlash from fans strongly opposed to any suggestion of his appointment.
The Kop revolt seems to have been the final nail in the coffin for him in the thinking of the club’s American owners, Fenway Sports Group.
