is   hurt not hurts?因为my THUMB not my THUMBS?

hurt 的其中两个定义是
（1）【及物/transitive】伤害（某人）
（2）【不及物/intransitive】感到疼痛，
明显是两个不同的含义。

这句子里的 they 不可能指的是单数的thumb，所以指的是 thorns；而句子里的 hurt 没有【宾语/object】，是个不及物动词，所以很明显是感到疼痛的意思。刺/thorns 怎么会感到疼痛呢？所以不可能是 they really hurt。我们学习词汇都是“大概，大概”地英中对照（如hurt-伤害）死背，所以可能会难以分辨这些定义上的差异，这题主要是针对这个弱点而出的，并提醒大家学习词汇时应该辨别同一个词的不同定义，也必须注意动词是及物或不及物动词......

哈哈，题目似乎有些杂乱，如果让我从新出题，我会简化一点：
I pricked my thumb on some thorns and they really hurt.
正确答案为：
I pricked my thumb on some thorns and it really hurt.
（这里的 hurt 是过去式）

还在纠结这个问题啊
hurt 的意思是：（身体某部位）感觉疼痛/to feel pain (in part of your body)
事件没有感觉，怎么会感到疼痛，那个例子里感到疼痛的是拇指。
这个句子里没用到“伤害”这个定义的 hurt  (那么严重，被戳一下就受到伤害了？当然 hurt 还有另一个定义，就是令人感到疼痛......）

如果人家弄疼你，可以说：It hurts.
本地人大概会说：So bainful！

为什么规定thorn必须是单数或复数？
在这个假设题中我选择复数的刺，那样才能误导人以为they hurt 是指那些刺伤害了我。如果我用单数，那可能有人会想，如果是一根刺，那不是应该改为 it hurt 吗？那不是误打误撞，改对了但理解还是错误的？

关于这个，我找不到解说这种句型的资料，但我认为应该避免用被动式的表达方式：My thumb was pricked by some thorns. 如果你换回主动式的句子：Some thorns pricked my thumb. 似乎在说主动致伤我的是那些刺，但事实上是我自己的疏忽造成拇指被刺伤。我才是主动弄伤我自己的人，所以此类人为造成伤害的动词，如 cut, hurt, burn, broke, pricked 都是以致伤者作为主语来表达，如：
• I broke my arm.
• He cut his hand.
• She burned her fingers.
• I hurt my back.

我们再来参考Longman词典如何处理这类动词的定义：
cut
6 [transitive] to injure yourself on something sharp that breaks the skin and makes you bleed
