Blake: 'Kind of glad' he didn't win
American Idol runner-up Blake Lewis isn't one for regrets, says LuzElena Avitia. He told reporters on Friday’s conference call that he’s completely satisfied with his Idol experience even though he didn't win the title.
“I always felt that my art wasn’t as mainstream as [the other contestants on the show],” he said. Being more of an “eclectic artist,” with tastes including independent and underground music, he says, “I just gave it my all, and I wound up at No. 2. That’s huge.”
He walks away from the experience with a blue Ford Mustang in tow, not to mention almost the same contract as winner Jordin Sparks. He gets to record and release an album, but isn’t contractually obligated to return to the show, citing that as a reason he’s “kind of glad” he didn’t win.
Not to mention the fact that he was not as gung-ho about the first single the winner would have to release, This Is My Now.
<More on Blake follows.>
“This Is My Now is definitely not my style. A song I would never sing if I didn’t have to.” He goes on to say, “I think they should have had two songs, one tailored to both of us.”
Does he feel like he "sold out" by going on Idol?
“I never had a huge fan base, so I don’t think you can sell out until you have a fan base,” he said. “I don’t think you can sell out until you start going off in directions that you wouldn’t normally do and sacrificing some of your integrity as an artist. As soon as you hear me singing more songs like This Is My Now, then you can say I sold out.”
He also told reporters his smartest move might have been singing Keane’s Somewhere Only We Know during Top 12 week, when he was still only known for his beatboxing, saying, “It was the only time where I was ‘using my strategery,’ as George Bush would say.”
Blake hopes to move to L.A. and record his album. And with the help of stylist friend Ashton Michael, he’d also like to learn to create his first pair of pants.
Maybe he’ll wear them during this summer’s Idol tour.
