Judges Thoughts : (R) It was pretty good man. You are an old fashioned singer so you have to remember to make it fresh. (P) You have come a long way. You look great. I loved the singing. (S) I hated the whole performance. The suit is hideous. The wink was hideous. It was all old fashioned and corny. This could have been something we filmed 30 years ago.

Judges Thoughts : (R) It was a little wierd when you started but you worked it out. (P) It was a bit worthy. You rocked it. you made it original. (S) I thought it was good. I thought you shouted a little in the middle. You almost made it believable.

Judges Thoughts : (R) Tough song to sing but you did a good job. You had a couple of pitch problems. Stay in it. (P) Stay on track. I have sentimental value to that song. (S) You came over much older. I think it was very cruise ship. A lot of people will watch this with a huge question mark over their heads. It was middle of the road.

Judges Thoughts : (R) Nice one. You had me rocking out. (P) I think you picked the perfect song. You look fantastic. The vocals were right in the pocket (S) The only performance tonight the makes sense. I thought it was a good performance. I am not quite sure if you are a rock singer.

Judges Thoughts : (R) I thought that was brilliant. You were born with a gift. I loved it. (P) I feel it was a brave and bold song choice. I forget about how old you are and see this confident older soul. You did a great job. (S) When you got it you got it. By a comfortable mile the best performance of the night.

Judges Thoughts : (R) You know how to have a good time. I actually thought it was good. Vocals were ok. That was cool. Kind of hot. (P) It was very warm, almost scalding. I love hearing how your voice goes in and out of these colors. This was a safe song. (S) I thought the performance was verging on grotesque. The whole performance was hideous.

Judges Thoughts : (R) That song was pitchy all the way through. It was sharp. It wasn’t great. (P) I don’t feel this was the best song choice from you. (S) Your problem was is that it was forgettable. No one is going to remember you. You have to stand out and you didn’t

Judges Thoughts : (R) You had a good time. You did a pretty good job. Started rough but all in all it was pretty good. (P) It was nice, you were having fun out there. Not your best performance. (S) It was ok. Not quite as bad as the other Elvis song but what did I get from that performance? Nothing. It was just a young kid singing an Elvis song quite well.

Song Title : Breaking Up Is Hard To Do
Judges Thoughts : (R) Love the song but you didn’t do anything with it. Make these things your own. Bring something to it. A couple of pitch problems. (P) That slow tempo brings the performance down. (S) It was boring, you look terrified and it looks like you have been shut up in your bedroom for a month. You need some fresh air and you need to make yourself young.

Judges Thoughts : (R) I liked the accent with the guitar. Little pitch problem at the end. Didn’t blow me away but it was alright. (P) You did blow me away. You picked a song that was perfect for you. (S) I thought it was in the Top 2 performances of the night. You have just got it. You made it sound current. It was effortless.

Song Title : Light My Fire
Judges Thoughts : (R) What a way to end a great night. You just throw all caution to the wind. That was hot. (P) It was an excellent way to end the night. You are a great part of this show. (S) You are the most consistent contestant we have had. You have the natural charisma of a lead singer.

American Idol lip-syncing : The new iTunes business model
It appears that at least one American Idol 7 contestant, Michael Johns, lip synced his performance on the Top 12 boys performance Tuesday night.
But why? The answer could be very simple: iTunes downloads.
But first, the video of Michael Johns’ lip-sync:

Start watching at 1:40.
Around 1:50, Johns’ mouth is turned away from the mic, yet the vocals remain at a steady level.
And around 2:04 his mouth again isn’t anywhere near the mic.
Then look again at the editing during these segments.
At 1:50 the camera pulls back, making it hard, but not impossible to see the lip-sync.
And at 2:04, the lip-sync is cleverly edited out of frame.
Remember: Tuesday’s show was pre-taped, giving producers the ability to edit or mask obvious lip-sync moments such as these.
But why have the Idol contestants lip-sync?
How about iTunes agreement to sell songs and videos of the Idol contestants the day after the show airs?
The pressure to have a product online and available only hours being recorded is immense.
If the vocal tracks are pre-taped, the performance can be tweaked to correct mistakes, pitchyness and rough spots.
If you don’t think stuido editing has been done with every song in the top 100 right now, think again.
Pre-recorded performances help streamline the process of iTunes making the audio available for download only hours after the performance.
While the end result is artistically and aesthetically lame, American Idol’s and iTunes’ digital download business model is a sensible one.
It replaces the existing broken one, in which Idol winners and runners-up release CDs months after the competition, only to be met with slumping sales and indifference.

Judges Thoughts : (R) It wasn’t your best performance. You had some pitch problems. (P) Being sick and the first one is a double whammy. You are a good performer. (S) We didn’t get a lot from that. The song didn’t suit you. Thought the performance was robotic.

Judges Thoughts : (R) The start was a little weird but you got it off at the end. (P) You got to pull it together. (S) I didn’t like it at all. There was no confidence and it was sub standard.

Judges Thoughts : (R) The beginning was rough but you sang it with conviction. (P) You nailed it. You had the best ending on that song. (S) I think you are very good. Hated the song but it was the first time tonight we didn’t see any nerves. You are sailing through to the next round.

Song Title :Baby Please Don’t Go
Judges Thoughts : (R) I loved that. I like the trousers. (P) I love everything you do. You are authentic. You are the real deal. (S) I really like you. You standout. It’s not the best performance, did you forget the words halfway through. I hope you stay around.

Judges Thoughts : (R) I didn’t think it was great. You have to hit that note. A lot of pitch problems. (P) The camera loves you. Once again I feel the nerves got to you. I felt it was lack luster. (S) It was what it was. You look great but you didn’t sound great. The arrangement was boring.

Judges Thoughts : (R) You can sing. There were a couple of pitchy things but I liked it. (P) Joyful, fun, big. Way to go. (S) Wasn’t your best performance but you are probably one of the most talented girls in this competition. It was terrific.
