MoBif Bhd is investing RM500m to roll out its wireless broadband solution, iBurst, in the country over the next four years. Its group chief executive officer Kevin Leong said the company intended to fund the investment through a combination of bank borrowings and equity participation from venture capitalists (VCs) and private investors. “We don’t want to have too much borrowings as that would be a liability for MoBif. We are looking at bringing in VCs and private equity investors who can take up a stake either at a group level or at our subsidiary MoBif Wireless Broadband Sdn Bhd,” he said on April 12. Leong said iBurst would be deployed in the Klang Valley, Penang, Johor Bahru and Kuching by year-end and would cover the whole country within the next four years. iBurst is an alternative technology used for wireless broadband that can provide coverage in a 13km radius and has speeds of 1mbps. Its runs on a 1.7GHz band and has full support for Internet protocol mobility of up to 100 miles per hour and has adaptive antennae technology that provides excellent indoor coverage. Leong said MoBif had signed a five-year partnership agreement with Japan-based Kyocera Corporation for technical expertise as well as the purchase of base stations and terminals. Speaking to reporters at the launch of the iBurst forum in Kuala Lumpur, he said MoBif had already purchased a few base stations from Kyocera for RM20.33 million for installation in the Klang Valley. Leong said the company intended to price its wireless broadband services to consumers at RM88 per month for unlimited access. Commercial launch is planned for the second half of the year. Meanwhile, Water, Energy and Communications Minister Datuk Seri Dr Lim Keng Yaik said he might consider retracting the 3.5GHz spectrum from the current holders, as there were interferences on the band wave with the MEASAT (Malaysia East Asia Satellite) 2 satellite. However, he said no decision had been made yet and he was considering all options. The 3.5GHz band is being used for wireless broadband and the spectrum holders include Nasioncom Holdings Bhd. He said he was also exploring the possibility of utilising the 2.5GHz spectrum for WiMax (wireless interoperability for microwave access). WiMax allows high-speed Internet access and file downloads from personal computers, laptops, telephones or other mobile devices over greater distances than the Wi-Fi (wireless fidelity) technology. Both Telekom Malaysia Bhd and Maxis Communications Bhd have announced their intentions to deploy WiMax using 2.5GHz band.
