The US Presidential elections are underway, with Mitt Romney and incumbent President Barack Obama having traded verbal punches in all three election debates.
Anyone who needs to send money to or from the US – or anywhere else in US dollars – in the coming months will face the impact of the election outcome, and since the US is the world’s biggest economy, any uncertainties there will resonate globally.
David Kerns, private client dealing manager at Moneycorp which provides the Telegraph International Money Transfer Service, said, “We may not see a massive buy or sell on the US dollar whether President Obama is re-elected or Mitt Romney takes power. The main problem for the US dollar at present is what is happening at the end of the year where they are talking about a ‘fiscal cliff’.”
This refers to a whole series of tax breaks that were brought in by President Bush in 2002 after the 9/11 attacks in 2001 to boost the US economy, and these tax breaks are due to finish at the end of this year. The concern is that if these tax breaks are not extended by the new president, the US economy in its current state would not be strong enough to withstand the pressure, and would fall back into recession.
Mr Kerns said, “Taxes would have to rise and spending cuts would be very deep and could take out a massive amount of growth in spending. Estimates suggest it could be as much as 5pc of the country’s entire GDP.
