SRC Statement on Parking Issue.
Assalamualaikum and good day to all
The recent and hotly debated parking issue in MMU is not a new issueto the management of Multimedia University (MMU). The Students’ RepresentativeCouncil (SRC) of MMU Melaka Campus has brought this up to the management andthe issue has been discussed for the past two years. SRC MMU Melaka had beenvoicing our concern over this issue for a long time. However, this year we canfinally see the new parking area which was provided by the management of MMU.Even though the condition of the parking area is still not as good as expected,we must acknowledge the effort of MMU’s management in trying to solve this‘unsolved’ issue.
We, from SRC would like to state our clear stand on this issue.Regardless of student or staff, we strongly disagree with anyone who parksalong the Dahlia Road and Ayer Keroh Lama Road .The safety of overall students and complaints by Taman Dahlia residents has beenseriously taken into consideration. It is estimated that almost 1000 studentsdrive their cars to campus and therefore the safety of the remaining 9000students are imperative in making us choose this stand. In addition, accidentshad been happening quite frequently to students in front of MMU Melaka Campus’smain gate.
What SRChave done so far?
The previous SRC (2008/2009) had sent a letter to MBMB requesting Ayer Keroh Lama Road to be made into an open parking area for MMUs’ community since the road israrely used by the public. Unfortunately, the authorities disagreed and hadrejected the application. The reason given by MBMB was that the particularstretch of road still needs to have a smooth traffic flow in case there of anemergency.
We, from SRC, then proposed to have a new car park, and this had beenobliged by the MMU management. However, the parking leaves much to be desiredas we can all see that it was not properly done.
Last week, we have been invited to attend a meeting organized by BahagianPelajar & Pekerja Antarabangsa. In the meeting we had been informed thatthe authority(s) is looking into this issue very seriously andwe believe that legal action will be taken against those who park theirvehicles illegally. We, the SRC, have been and arestill trying to spread the news to the students among students in order to notpark illegally.
Whatgoing to be fight?
The Student Representative Council, representing around 11 thousands students, believes that the MMU managementshould take immediate action to solve this problem. We have also suggested thatthe MMU president Square should be opened as a temporary car park.
At the same time, we would like to proposeto the MMU management to tar the path to the new car park and the new car park itself.
We also would like to suggest to the MMUmanagement to open the staff parking behind the ACR building to students sincethe car park is not fully occupied by staff most of the time.
We, SRC also will try to appeal for all students that have been issueda summons issued out in the last week by the JPJ, IPK Melaka and also MBMB.
Unless concrete and immediate action is taken, the tension between theMMU management and students will increase, obstructing both from reaching ourdistinct aims which is to solve this problem with the best solution.
Reminder
We also would like to remind all students to not attend any gatheringsthat do not have a permit by police. There have been rumors that there will bea press conference, or gathering(s) organized by the press or reporter in thiscoming week. We would like to suggest all students to ignore it since we arereally concerned that there is a possibility students will be arrest by thepolice and even charged by the MMU management.
(As being stated in both Malaysian law and MMU rules and regulation)
We also would like to ask all students to avoid parking along bothTaman Dahlia and Ayer Keroh Lama Road .Please do occupy all the parking slots provided by MMU management.
We are looking into this matter seriously and would welcome anyfeedback, comment, or better suggestions in solving this matter. Students cansubmit their views to the SRC president’s email: president.srcmlk@ gmail.com
