No such thing happened before. Two of five movies nominated for the Best Pictures in the Academy Awards® dealt sympathetically with gay topics. Capote and Brokeback Mountain evoked a huge debate in the public about how homosexuality has been treated as a normalized and common theme in motion pictures. Brokeback Mountain had the most nominations in that year but lost to Crash for the best picture title. It again incurred the opposition between the open and the conservative group. Real movie lovers condemned the Oscars for being conservative and not accepting the homosexuality issues. However, looking back at the history, Midnight Cowboy meanwhile was selected the Best Picture in 1969, becoming the first and only X-rated film to win the title. So how exactly the homosexuality issues have been treated in Hollywood? How has been the progress of homosexuality movement in the society in the past 60 years? How does the gay rights social movement affect the film industry? What are the problems that the gay films always face? And the most importantly, this research paper tries to answer the question "Are gay movies taken just as other films?"


Gay films in different era represent different significance but they always bring much controversy. Midnight Cowboy was introduced during the 60’s where confusion and fear brought by the Vietnam War, the expansion and advocates of sexual freedom, and the social occurred in the changing American society. It was defined by “The new Hollywood movies” where the director used the tragic story of conservative and naïve cowboy going to the modern New York to represent the collapse of American conservative values. Same as Midnight Cowboy, Brokeback Mountain always brought controversy and huge impact on American values with the image of the cowboys. The huge visual and cultural shock is the relation between gay culture and the cowboys which are iconic image of muscularity. In Maurice, the movie ridiculed the conservatism of Britain for discriminating homosexuality where other European countries like France and Italy had already legalized homosexuality. From above, we can see that these three movies broke the stereotyping and brought social changes towards homosexuality for different societies. And also, these three movies daringly brought the sensitive issues that other movies did not dare bring the social movement of homosexuality.
