Kodiak Shows the Way Ahead

In case you've been living under a rock, there's an oil-rush on in North Dakota. Kodiak Oil & Gas (NYSE: KOG) is now reaping the benefits of its investment in the state -- specifically in the Bakken Shale Reserves.

Share prices of Kodiak have shot up an amazing 120% over the past six months. Compare that to the S&P 500, which has only risen 20% over the same period. And, believe it or not, there's good reason to believe the trend will continue; the company intends to expand its operations in 2011.

Making moves
From a humble start in 2008, producing 300 barrels of oil equivalent per day -- or BOE/d for short -- the company has come a long way. As of Dec. 31, 2010, Kodiak produces approximately 2700 BOE/d -- this with a two rig drilling program in the Williston Basin of North Dakota. Investing in Exploration and Production (E&P) companies is not an easy task, of course, where various speculative factors can come into play. So many companies have had to deal with dry wells and natural disasters. But on the flip side, a successful venture can set the share prices zooming -- as is clearly the case with Kodiak and its shares.

A growth strategy
Investors should be enticed by what's going on at Kodiak. The company plans to double its number of rigs in the Bakken and Three Forks region to four. In addition, the company holds a 50% working interest in a joint venture with ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM) in a drilling project in the nearby Dunn County.

With the company aiming for 5,500-6,500 BOE/d in 2011, things are definitely looking good. Naturally, risks abound, especially in this industry. But I don't believe there's significant cause for worry in the long run.

The oil rush in North Dakota is slowly turning the tide in favor of investors and companies like Kodiak. I'm slowly becoming a believer. Kodiak's good fortune appears to be a sign of better things to come

KAZ earnings power = strong buy

KAZ earned 70 cents per share in 2008, 37 cents in 2009 and 18 cents in fiscal year 2010.   KAZ earnings peaked at 70 cents in 2008 when oil went over $100 per barrel and their earnings fell with the price of oil.   Now that oil has been around $90 per barrel and is eventually headed back over $100 it is realistic for KAZ to earn 70 cents per share- possibly more due to the very large production increase that was just announced at their Kariman well.

Hi All,

I've had a few requests from SSN holders for me to have a bit of a closer look at the TA of the stock, so here goes. I don't have a way of doing up a youtube video like some of the other chartists on HotCopper, but I tried to give a fairly comprehensive overview of the various charts on my screen. A few weeks ago I made quite a bullish claim that $3.60 could be hit on the AMEX shares. Some might have called that a bit of an exhuberant prediction, and ultimately it was a bit of a lofty price for the shares to hit in the short term. Nevertheless, things are looking quite good for SSN.

Below is the all time weekly chart and what I've highlighted is the potential for a repeat of quite a big range from the past. This time the range is taking it's time, but I wouldn't rule out the chances of it being completed in 2011. The target is around 22.5cents. I'm also liking that the stock pushed through the 200EMA with ease. One concern is that the the 23.6% overall fibonacci level is around 14cents and so far the stock has struggled to crack that mark. Keep an eye on it, but I'm fairly certain that with the fundamentals behind the company, that level should be taken care of fairly easily with some news flow。

  

Onto the weekly indicators and I see signals that the stock could look to consolidate around current prices while. The stock has had a great run over the past few months, and with all great runs comes the urge for some holders to take their profits off the table. The stochastics look a bit overcooked but they will most likely diverge in the mid 30s. Keep an eye on it for another buy signal on the weekly chart. Volume looks good for what has recently happened。

  

Onto the daily chart and I've made note of what will most likely happen over the coming weeks. As the weekly indicators take some time off, you would expect the stock to consolidate. This claim is supported by the position of the bollinger bands which are suggesting a period of lower volatility in the stock is around the corner. The 161% fibonacci continuation target has been completed, and the next target in the series is at 19cents. You would expect this target to be hit over the coming months once the stock kicks into gear again。

   


Finally here are the daily indicators. Just like on the weekly chart, they will need some time off from the overbought mark, but I wouldn't be thinking there will be too much downwards pressure looking at the volume. The low volume in the past week or so shows that there isn't as much profit taking as one would be led to believe given the stock has run over 100% in around 6 weeks of trading。

  


Ultimately I reckon SSN is looking pretty good. You all know how fundamentally sound the company is, and I would be looking at some more significant upwards movement in the April/May period as the drilling in the Niobrara gets closer.
