Top Glove to acquire rival, expand plants
(http://www.btimes.com.my/Current ... ptop-2.xml/Article/)
The rubber glove maker is talking to a few companies now, but it will most likely be one acquisition, says its chairman
THE world's biggest manufacturer of rubber gloves, Top Glove Corp Bhd, has set aside RM100 million this year to buy a rival and expand its factories.
"We're talking to a few companies now, but it will most likely be one acquisition," Top Glove chairman Tan Sri Lim Wee-Chai said.
Currently, Top Glove produces 29 billion pieces of gloves a year, which is about 24 per cent share of the global market. It aims to capture 35 per cent by December 2010. The estimated annual demand by then is 160 billion gloves.
Lim said the firm has no plans to buy latex concentrate manufacturer Titi Latex Sdn Bhd. Lim holds 4.85 per cent of Titi Latex.
"We already have two such plants in Thailand supplying two-thirds of our latex needs," he said.
Titi Latex is a unit of the Titi Latex Group of Companies, which has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Sarawak state government and China-based Guangdong Agribusiness Group Corp to develop large-scale rubber estates and set up rubber-processing factories, worth US$50 million (about RM164 million), in Sarawak.
Lim was speaking to reporters after the company's annual and extraordinary general meetings in Kuala Lumpur yesterday. Also present were executive directors Lim Hooi Sin, Lim Cheong Guan and Lee Kim Meow.
Cheong Guan, who is also the finance director, said that Top Glove expects to boost its net profit by 22 per cent to RM125 million for the fiscal year to August 31 2008.
Top Glove is also confident that a slowing US economy will not affect its business because rubber gloves are a necessity.
"Even though 30 per cent of our sales comes from the US, rubber gloves are a necessity and our clients will continue to place their orders."
Top Glove is also optimistic of winning a patent dispute.
On May 30 last year, the US-based Tillotson Corp filed a complaint against all nitrile glove manufacturers, distributors or importers worldwide, claiming to be the patent holder for nitrile gloves until 2010.
Eight glovemakers, through the Malaysian Rubber Glove Manufacturers Association (Margma), are contesting Tillotson's claim. Top Glove is part of the group.
"We stand a good chance because Malaysia is one of the earliest countries to make nitrile gloves. As a group via Margma, we're optimistic of a positive outcome from our action by year-end," Lim said.
However, Supermax Corp Bhd, which is not part of the group, has agreed to settle and pay royalty to Tillotson. - By Ooi Tee Ching |

Top Glove still on acquisition trail
Top Glove still on acquisition trail
http://biz.thestar.com.my/news/s ... 12&sec=business
KUALA LUMPUR: Top Glove Corp Bhd is still on an acquisition trail despite the challenging industry landscape.
Chairman Tan Sri Dr Lim Wee-Chai said the group was currently in talks with several local parties, including public-listed companies.
“There is a good chance that we would close one deal this year,” he told reporters after an analyst briefing yesterday.
But, he stressed that Top Glove would not rush into a deal. “We must invest at the right price and right time,” he added.
Besides Supermax Corp Bhd and Kossan Rubber Industries Bhd, among the smaller public-listed glove makers are Adventa Bhd, Latexx Partners Bhd, Rubberex Corp Bhd and Integrated Rubber Corp Bhd.
Rubberex and Integrated Rubber have sunken into losses as a result of the rising raw material costs and strengthening ringgit that had eroded the US dollar-denominated earnings plus intensive competition.
Lim said the glove manufacturing industry would consolidate further in the current tough operating environment and that would subsequently shake out the weaker players.
Being the world’s biggest glove producer, in terms of capacity, Top Glove actually saw the industry consolidation as an opportunity for asset acquisitions.
Besides, it was on the lookout for rubber plantations to realise its plan to venture upstream as well, Lim added.
Top Glove had allocated RM100mil for capital expenditure for the financial years ending Aug 31 (FY08) and FY09, and that included the budget for asset acquisitions, he added.
Commenting on rising raw material costs, Lim reiterated the group had managed to pass on 80% of its additional costs to customers by raising the selling prices.
Top Glove, which increased its average selling price by 8% to 10% last year, had raised it by 3% to 4% in the last three months.
According to Lim, the price of latex concentrate was currently at RM5.50 per kilo, which was relatively high compared with RM1 to RM2 before the commodity boom five years back.
Although some of its peers are striving for survival, the group actually expects its revenue in FY08 to grow at 26% and 23% in FY09. Its net profit in FY08 is expected to rise 21% to RM125mil and 24% in FY09 to RM155mil.
Based on a paid-up capital of 300.6 million shares, the net profit targets would translate into earnings per share of 41.6 sen in FY08 and 51.5 sen in FY09. |
