Giant to open stores in Sabah, Sarawak

FOOD retailer Dairy Farm Giant Retail Sdn Bhd will be setting up two Giant hypermarkets in Sabah and Sarawak in two years.

The hypermarkets would be opened in Kota Kinabalu and Kuching by the second quarter of 2007, said chief executive officer John Coyle.

There were 3.6 million people in Sabah and Sarawak, and yet there was no Giant hypermarket in the two states, he told reporters on the sidelines of a recent business matching session between 38 Malaysian small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and Hong Kong buyers.

Dairy Farm Giant Retail registered sales revenue of RM2.4bil last year, representing 15% of the total sales revenue of Hong Kong-based Dairy Farm Group, which operates the Wellcome supermarket chain, IKEA and 7-Eleven here.

Coyle said the company, which would operate 72 Giant hypermarkets nationwide by next week, would look to open a fresh food centre similar to its Hong Kong equivalent in Malaysia once it reached critical mass.

“We will open a long-term, centralised fresh food centre, probably by the end of next year, once we reach a retail mass,” he said.

A memorandum of understanding was signed between Dairy Farm Giant Retail and Malaysian SMEs to formalise the retailer's commitment to help the SMEs understand export requirements and expectations of the Hong Kong market, as well as to facilitate their exports to Wellcome supermarkets here.

Dairy Farm Group chief executive Ronald Floto said the company felt a great sense of obligation to support Malaysian SMEs in understanding the overseas market.

“Also, as a business, we are anxious to introduce new products, new tastes and new categories to our consumers,” he said.

Floto said the next market to promote SME food products to would naturally be Singapore, although it would be up to the country’s management to decide how to do so.

“Some items can be very successful in one country like Hong Kong, but don’t sell well in others, like Singapore,” he added.

叶金来：位交通枢纽策略地点 7哩迅速迈向城市化

　　（本报古晋11日讯）首长署助理部长兼城市发展部助理部长拿督叶金来指出，随着7哩至15哩道路将重新铺上沥青，而古晋通往西连的双程大道也已经完成，位于主要交通枢纽之策略性地点，可以预见七哩一带的城市化进程趋势将会加速。

    “7哩处于经济发展迅速的地区，比之古晋市与石角新市镇可谓比上不足，比下有余，是个新兴的市镇。”

    七哩从当初几十间店屋，发展至今日拥有超过500多个单位的店屋与住宅区，但这同时也带来负面的影响。七哩地区位处各道路必经之地，非常繁忙，人口集中，时常出现交通阻塞现象，每到交通尖峰时间，常见车龙出现。

处交通要道处

    “通过公共工程局，已经批准将七哩交通圈改为交通灯，希望这项工程能够尽快推行，纾缓当地交通。”

    他说，七哩民众联谊会在这趋势下，扮演重要的角色显得更为重要，在促进传统居民与新地区居民的情谊，与其他各大社团联系，举办活动方面，扮演更积极的角色。

    叶金来是昨晚出席七哩区民众联谊会庆祝成立25周年纪念，主办第三届首长署助理部长兼城市发展部助理部长拿督叶金来挑战杯兼晋汉省联谊团体华语卡啦OK歌唱赛大决赛联欢晚宴上致词时，发表上述演说。

促进居民情谊

    此歌唱赛获得11个联谊会及百多名歌手踊跃参加，叶金来希望以后多举办类似的活动，以促进各社团与地区人民的联谊，提倡康乐活动，争取福利和权益上更有凝聚力。

    回顾七哩民众联谊会在华总的号召下成立，于1980年成立时。当时七哩正处于城市与郊区地，会员300多名，不如今天般拥有完善的会所。经过漫长的岁月，在各社团的支持与合作下，随着时代成长，促进人民团结，地方发展、教育、慈善、福利、康乐等活动方面，作出积极贡献。

    此外，联谊会也协助筹办华校，筹措办学经费。七哩民众联谊会今日已经拥有本身的会所，成为自力更生的协会，有自己的会所和收入。他举例重建七哩三合兴小学校楼便是一个很好的例子，在大家众志成城下，克服一切困难，也使七哩地区的教育系统趋向完善，拥有幼稚园、小学与中学，为造就人才方面作出贡献。

进入三马连新市镇的新道路，今日起正式启用。



    （古晋12日讯）进入三马连新市镇的新道路，今日起正式启用。

    该段全长2.4公里，宽50公尺的新道路，耗资1千200多万令吉。首长署助理部长拿督道勿阿都接曼今日受邀为该大道主持开幕礼。

    由於三马连新市镇房屋的迅速发展和人口的急速增加，因此，建立新大道来缩短通往该市镇的路程也显得更加重要。

    如今，从苏丹登雅路使用该新道路通往三马连新市镇的中心，将可缩短2公里的路程。

?  三马连市镇计划私人有限公司主席丹斯里沙拉胡汀表示，三马连新市镇如今有1万8千多位居民，随著人口的急增，建新道路也显得更加重要。

    他说，新路直接通到三马连新市镇的中心，还有许多的发展还在进行当中，并为人们带来许多发展潜能，也必定让古晋市民对该新市镇刮目相看。

?  据了解，三马连市镇计划私人有限公司属於砂拉越日光公司和工积金局联营的一家公司，主要负责发展北市三马连一带的5千英亩土地。

    该公司目前的发展情况，第一阶段的发展工程是在1997年开始，如今，该公司已将一片沼泽地发展为今日的新市镇。

    整体上，第一阶段的发展包括2千500个廉价房屋单位，2千993个中高价房屋及273个商业单位。至今为止，已有2千500个廉价房屋已完成，并交到买主手中，另外还有800个中高价房屋也已经完成。

?  据了解，三马连新市镇所建立的商单层排屋售价介於15万2千888令吉至16万8千888令吉，双层排屋售价从20万9千388令吉起。

    另外，单层半独立屋的售价从24万9千888令吉起，新设计1层半的半独立屋售价从28万8千888令吉起，双层半独立屋售价从34万9千888令吉起。

    沙拉胡汀指出，三马连新市镇的房屋绝对是值得古晋市民投资的资产。如今，在该市镇已开设了两间学校，一个面积达16英亩的休闲中心也将开发，同时，英迪学院计划中的新学院也将在今年内动工。

PPES Works begins construction of new Pusat Islam in Kuching



Friday, 9 September 2005, Kuching – PPES Works (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd, a member of the Cahya Mata Sarawak Group of Companies, has started construction of the RM10.7 million Pusat Islam Complex in Kuching.

A “Doa Selamat” ceremony to mark the commencement of construction works was officiated by Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Islamic Affairs) and Assistant Minister for Industrial Development, YB Ir. Haji Daud Abdul Rahman, here this morning.

Construction of the new Pusat Islam complex, located on a 4-acre site in the undulating and serene area of Jalan Ong Tiang Swee, Kuching, is expected to be completed within 24 months.

The contract for construction of the complex by Majlis Islam Sarawak was awarded to PPES Works, one of Sarawak’s leading service providers in the construction industry. The project award was won on a competitive tender basis, and represents a breakthrough for PPES Works in pursuing more work from government agencies and its subsidiary companies.

PPES Works is a Malaysian Construction Industry Excellence Award (MCIEA) winner, having done over RM2 billion worth of civil works and various construction projects. The company is part of CMS Group’s Construction & Road Maintenance Strategic Business Unit which has a current order book in excess of  RM3 billion. This includes the new Dewan Undangan Negeri (DUN) complex, maintenance of State and Federal roads, several rural water projects and the Independent Oil Terminal at Senari in Kuching.

In the Pusat Islam project, the main Scope of Works will be construction of an auditorium, preparation area, administration office, library, hostels, surau, classrooms, an atrium and other facilities and amenities.

Such facilities are in line with the objectives of the new Pusat Islam complex which will be to provide an important resource facility for Muslims and non-Muslims alike to improve their knowledge on the religion. The centre also seeks to promote dialogue, interaction and understanding amongst the various faiths within Sarawak.

Educational needs of Muslim-converts will also be given special emphasis.

In keeping with the multi-ethnicity of Sarawak, the architectural concept of the new Pusat Islam complex will incorporate elements from the Iban, Bidayuh, Melanau, Malay, Chinese and Orang Ulu communities.

These include Iban motif carvings on the building facade, the Bidayuh ‘Barok’, tall Melanau main columns in the Auditorium, Malay house roofs gable ends, Chinese multi-level solid roofing, and Orang Ulu motives on the columns.

The combination of these unique design elements shall demonstrate the beauty and strength of “human diversity in unity”.

When completed, the new Pusat Islam complex is set to be another iconic architectural building in Kuching.

“2005砂拉越文化缤纷庆中秋”开幕
首长宣布·耗资30万，亚答街建永久牌楼

　　（古晋14日讯）首席部长丕显斯里阿都泰益玛目宣布在亚答街兴建一座永久牌楼，有关牌楼耗资30万令吉。

　　在最近为潮联大会开幕时，拿督沈瑞永向首长提出这要求，首长于今晚为“2005砂拉越文化缤纷庆中秋”主持开幕时作出宣布。

　　首长说，亚答街除了是华人早期建立具历史性的地方，更是两岸华巫两大民族建立起牢固联系的发源点。

　　他说，古晋从早期华巫两族交流的城市，随着时代的演变，达雅族也加入这大家庭，成为名符其实的多元种族、文化的大城市。

　　他指出，各族长期经营的良好密切联系，不但促进各族亲善，也维护和发扬彼此间文化，进一步拉近各族距离，形成砂州的多元种族与文化特色。

　　首长说，各种长久来的此种关系，不但使州民从中受惠良多，更对砂州未来在各领域的发展起着积极的作用。他希望看到这种情况能长久持续世代延续下去，确保各族和睦共处，共创更好明天。

　　他赞扬杨莉州议员和阿都拉曼朱奈迪州议员，合力成功创先河办此进一步拉近各族的文化活动，并一年比一年更出色及广受各族支持。

　　他指通过这活动，不但进一步拉近各族距离，让他族认识彼此间不同文化及进行交流，同时也有助于维护和发扬各族的丰富文化遗产。

首长：与联邦行政中心等连成一线，德玛拉勿具发展潜能

　　（古晋14日讯）德玛拉勿工业区具有重大的发展潜能，随着紧密联系巴哥和双溪巴哥，衔接到山都望以及诗巫拉勿的2020宏愿联邦行政中心，将各地区的基本设施便利连成一线，预料这原本沉寂的地区今后将大有作为。

　　首席部长兼财政部长及策划与资源管理部长丕显斯里泰益玛目指出，德玛拉勿工业区的交通四通八达，除陆路外，尚可透过海港服务通往与联系到巴哥和山都望周边地区，并且与诗巫拉勿的联邦行政中心地区衔接，形成紧密联系的系统。

　　首长表示，在愈来愈多的基本建设与工厂在这整个地区设立及启用之后，将进一步刺激德玛拉勿区域的发展，甚至成为本州的主要工业中心。

　　这是他今日下午为耗资4100万令吉建竣的德玛拉勿海关局房屋住宅区主持开幕启用仪式时，如此透露的消息。

　　首长也称，政府将在砂印边界的珍珠镇所设的内陆海港，设立工业中心，主要是将从邻国印尼西加里曼丹进口的半制成品加以增值，并推到外销市场。

　　他说，我国不能与其他国家在提供廉价劳工上相比及竞争，主要是所涉及的制成品成本较高，例如在家私业。因此，本州必须是着重在提升产品品质，透过为所进口的半制成品增值后出口。

　　首长表示，在全球化市场中，未来的共同市场关税将被废除。在这方面，海关局必须加紧研究取缔逃税的措施之可行性。

　　他称，在这全球化竞争的大势所趋下，本州处于共同市场的政策圈，有必要探讨所采取的政策，对未来的市场做好准备，以开拓更大的市场。

　　提及德玛拉勿海关局房屋住宅区，首长丕显斯里泰益玛目认为，这新颖住宅区的启用，将确保海关局人员享有完善的起居生活设备，甚至是可比美私人界首席执行员等所居住的房子类型。

　　他说，此地区也接近申纳里海港，对海关局官员而言是享有更大的便利。

　　昨由首长主持启用

　　（本报古晋14日讯）一项耗资4100万令吉的砂州德玛拉勿海关局房屋住宅区计划已经全面建竣，并于今日由首席部长丕显斯里泰益玛目主持开幕启用，官员们可以随时入伙。

　　于今日举行开幕启用的德玛拉勿房屋住宅区，是于2002年动工兴建，由于一些技术上的问题工程一度被停顿，使到工程必须在今年中才能全面完成。

　　这项占地14.97依甲的德玛拉勿海关房屋住宅区共有150间不同款式房子，这包括四间双层独立屋，供州级海关局长及副局长使用；34间双层半独立屋供海关高级官员使用，以及112间4层楼的步梯组屋供其他官员使用。

　　这项拥有全面及完善设备的海关房屋住宅区范围也设有各项基本设备、游乐园、康乐中心、足球场、保安亭、祈祷室、多用途民众中心等。

　　此间德玛拉勿海关房屋住宅区建设与国内其他州属的建设相同。

连贯石隆门到婆罗洲高原，政府决定兴建到罗港路

　　（古晋14日讯）政府决定兴建一条道路从石隆门到罗港连贯到婆罗洲高原，以缩短石隆门到婆罗洲高原的路程。

　　基本设施与交通部助理部长李景胜宣布，该道路将扮演内陆走廊的角色，进而带动石隆门与婆罗洲高原地带的发展。

　　他今天上午在文莪区州议员基勒苏修医生和多名公务局官员陪同下巡视了从巴达旺到石隆门到罗港的道路后，向报界宣布这项消息。

　　他欣慰的看到从石隆门到罗港通往斯罗拔路全长8公里的沥青道路已接近完成。该道路耗资860万令吉。

　　随着该段道路完成后，政府紧接将发展另一段从到罗港途经斯罗玛、斯基雅、斯玛当到达婆罗洲高原的路段。

　　明年初动工2008年完成

　　该路段目前正处在策划与准备标书阶段，预料可望在今年杪或明年初正式动工兴建。倘若一切顺利推行，将可在2008年竣工。

　　李景胜一行人今天上午从古晋出发，到巴达旺一带的登武甲、文莪和婆罗洲高原路一带巡视，后到石隆门的到罗港、斯达和新山等巡视当地的甘帮与乡村道路。

　　他表示对这些道路的保养感到满意，但同时也认为某些路段，特别是人口较稠密的地区的石子路需要优先的提升为沥青道路。

　　政府将会在明年开跑的第九个大马计划下策划，推动这些被鉴定需要优先发展的道路。

赛戈华称获策划单位批准，设三通讯塔合法！

　　（古晋14日讯）赛戈华有限公司(SACOFA Sdn Bhd)在实加玛路、宋路和朋岭酒店附近施工建立通讯塔是合法的，是获取砂州策划单位批准。

　　公用事业部部长拿督阿旺登雅今日在一篇文告作此表示时披露，迄今，州策划单位已原则上批准古晋65个地点，设立共用通讯塔，(古晋南北市和巴达旺市议会辖区)，以重新迁置现有约160个设在店屋顶楼的非法通讯塔，这些不合法的通讯塔是由各电讯公司在未获得州策划单位批准擅自竖立的。

　　政府此举是要迎合各电讯公司的技术需求以及解决公众对现有通讯塔构成安全与健康的威胁。为了迎合电讯公司技术上的需求，新的共用通讯塔也建在原有通讯塔附近，以确保通讯服务的素质。

　　他指示，将设立在店屋顶楼的非法通讯塔迁至新建共用通讯塔，将消除公众对电讯幅射影响健康的担忧。与此同时，重置160个非法通讯塔也符合州政府建立花园城市的宏愿。

　　拿督阿旺登雅说，政府是基于各私人电讯公司分别在市内店屋顶楼，在不安全和危险性的情况下设立通讯塔，及违反了政府建立花园城市的政策下，而决定采取共用通讯塔的政策。

　　在州政策的共用通讯塔政策下，所有可以合法化的现有非法的通讯塔必须获得州策划单位批准及由赛戈华有限公司接管、不能合法化的通讯塔将被拆除、委任赛戈华为建立通讯塔的州机构，不允许在4层楼或以下建筑物设通讯塔。

　　他补充，设立共用通讯塔的目的是让所有的电讯公司公平分享，以及受批准的通讯塔不会因地主或店拒绝让电通公司续用而受影响。

　　州政在2002年正式委任赛戈华有限公司全权负责兴建、拥有和管理共用通讯塔。州政府拥有赛戈华有限公司的绝大部份股权。

——耗资3亿1300万令——
NAIM CENDERA控股公司获承建砂警行动组总部工程

　　（古晋15日讯）NAIM CENDERA控股公司获得了耗资3亿1300万令吉的古晋石角路的砂拉越警察普通行动组总部的重建工程。

　　该公司主席拿督阿都哈密斯巴威今天在州警察总监拿督达立查玛的见证下，从公共工程局保安工程局长拉蒂花手中接过了有关的发展工程，并预计从即日起的30个月内竣工。

　　在该计划下的工程包括在该面积300余英亩的面积上建造州普通行动组的总部大夏、军火中心、训练中心、警察宿舍等等。

　　根据拿督阿都哈密斯巴威在致词中表示，这也是历来本州所展开最大型的保安工程计划。该公司是在今年正月获得该工程的授意书，以及在本月正式得到工程的发展书。

　　有鉴于该普通行动组警营仍全面的操作中，为了避免影响到警方的工作，因此工程必须分成五个阶段施工。

　　虽然如此，在引进高科技工艺建筑技术下，该公司有信心能够在2007年9月以前顺利完成有关的计划。

　　州警察总监拿督达立查玛按发言时表示，该普通行动组警营都是木版建筑物，许多也已破落不堪了，因此他感激联邦政府批准重建该警营。

　　砂劳越警察普通行动前身是警察野战部队，其总部最初于1878年是座落在武吉利萧的警察训练学校，后在1935年提升为野战部队总部。

　　2002年，州政府与联邦当局达致协议，征用该地段，兴建新的州立法议会大夏。因此普通行动组总部迁移到石角的警营。

本州最美最好马中友谊公园，10月完成年杪开放

　　（古晋19日讯）正在如火如荼兴建中的马中友谊公园预料在今年10月杪完成，并在年底开放予公众。

　　这标志马中建交30年及纪念郑和下西洋600年的公园，耗资2000万令吉，其中联邦政府通过旅游部拨款650万令吉，及中国和本地私人界捐献。

　　首长署助理部长兼城市发展部助理部长拿督叶金来昨晚在出席古晋永明枫岭居民联谊会乙酉年中秋联欢会上致词作此披露时相信，一旦这由田承凯市长发起的计划建成，马中友谊公园将是本州最美、最好的公园。

　　他说，永明枫岭和达万高原区是南市辖区内策划及环境最好，市民最响往的地区，交通完善，清洁，治安良好，给人与众不同之感受，这是市长与民众共同努力争取拨款得来的

　　在形容这两个地区居民是最幸运的一群时，拿督叶希望该区居民继续与市政局共同努力，把该区建设得更美好。

　　他欢迎居民们提出改善环境的建设性意见予市政局去研究，并保证只要建议是好的，政府肯定会接纳。

　　他过后宣布各拨款2000令吉予古晋永明枫岭居民联谊会和达闽高原居民联谊会，作为活动经费。并表示明年会考虑拨一万令吉予古晋永明枫岭居民联谊会作为增建雨盖活动中心基建用途。

　　较早，古晋永明枫岭居民联谊会主席甲必丹叶俊杰说，主办这联欢会，除了庆祝华人传统佳节，发扬中华文化，更重要是让居民相聚一堂，互相认识，建立友情，发扬左邻右舍守望相助精神。

　　他希望居民作好本身的防范工作，与警方保持密切合作及发挥高度的守望相助精神，建立更安宁的生活环境。

　　他赞扬该区居民积极响应市政局发起的清洁运动，并希望居民继续保持这种环保美德，建立清洁和健康生活环境。

叶金来：耗资450万零吉 七哩设交通灯下月动工

    （本报古晋19日讯 州城市发展与旅游部助理部长拿督叶金来表示，七哩交通圈改建交通灯系统及建3道路工程，预料会在10月1日开始动工。

    他说，这项耗资450万令吉的工程，预计会在1至2年内完。

他说，除了7哩以外，4哩半中公处的十字路口，也正在进行计划改善当地的交通繁忙状况。

    另一方面，巴达旺市议会主席陈如飞也称，为了配合工程的进行，该议会已经将交通圈的花草树木移开，以让工程可以顺利的进行。

    他们是昨晚出席7哩圣淘沙11社团中秋联欢晚会暨华语卡拉ok歌唱比赛，后接受访问时如此称。

    拿督叶金来表示，11社团举办的中秋联欢晚会是一个常年性质的活动，除了庆祝华人的传统节日外，也通过举办卡拉OK歌唱赛及提灯笼等活动，发扬及传承华人的传统习俗，并加强7哩地区社团之间的团结。

高速发展衍生问题

    他说，7哩地区10多年取得了迅速的发展，7哩圣淘沙镇的城市化、发展迅速，同时也带来了许多的高速发展后的棘手问题。

他指出，目前城市发展部正在着手处理繁荣背后带来的种种问题，最迫切解决的就是改善交通的问题。而公共工程局、巴达旺市议会、土地局及各有关部门正在收集资料，为解决及改善7哩交通问题而作准备。

    他称，巴都吉当道路工程完工后，便解决了部份的交通阻塞问题。而7哩这一带，尤其是交通圈的交通状况，在早上及傍晚的时份，是最为阻塞及高峰及时间，而城市发展部也在数月前成立了一个交通协调小组，已经开过3次会议。

    拿督叶表示，这交通协调小组处理的是一些交通技术上问题，但更大的交通问题，只能在会议提出讨论及提出解决的方案，需提呈予有关部才解决。

改建交通灯系统

    同时，他也重申，如何解决7哩交通圈的问题，就是将之改建成红绿灯的交通系统，这项计划已在第8大马计划下获得联邦的批准，而工程会在第9大马计划下继续进行。

    他说，工程已招标及开标，若是一切顺利，预计可以在下个月开始动工，450万零吉的交通圈改建工程，考虑到种种的问题，顺利的话可以在一两年内竣工。

    另一方面，拿督叶表示，从15哩至6哩这一段的道路，为了改善路面的情况，将会重新铺上沥青，而提升道路设备方面，在第9大马计划下，将向联邦争取拨款建造3大道双程道路工程，以解决3哩至5哩一带的日益严重的交通阻塞问题。

第九大马计划下争拨款改善3哩至5哩堵车问题

　　（古晋19日讯）鉴于3哩至5哩一带堵车问题日趋严重，首长署兼城市发展部助理部长拿督叶金来表示，在第9大马计划下，他们已向联邦争取拨款，以便把该处一段道路扩建为三线道路，以纾解交通阻塞的情况。

　　他说，由于该一带发展迅速，超市林立，间接使得交通阻塞问题出现，而目前现有的双线大道亦已经不能满足眼下的需求。

　　他同时亦指出，晋连路6哩至15哩一带的路段已呈败坏之势，因此有必要急须给予提升，重新将该路段铺上沥青。

　　他表示，以上有关的工程将以分阶段的方式给予进行，而第八大马计划的晋连路段工程部分已完成。

Ibraco plans RM268m project

Ibraco Bhd plans to undertake a RM268 million mixed residential and commercial property project in Kuching. Work is expected to start at the end of 2007 and completed by 2012.

"The expected gross profit to be derived from the proposed project is approximately RM97 million," it said on Sept 20. The development cost of the project would be from its own funds and bank borrowings.

Ibraco said that its unit Ibraco Shine Sdn Bhd had entered into a conditional sale and purchase agreement with a related party - Ibraco Properties Sdn Bhd -- to acquire 23.6ha of mixed-zone land in Kuching.

Five more Kanebo salons this year

COSMETICS Resources Sdn Bhd, Kanebo’s authorised agent in Malaysia, is setting up five more Kanebo international salons in Kuala Lumpur, Johor Baru and Kuching by the end of next year.

Its customer service director Julian Loh told StarBiz in a recent interview that the concept of an international salon was still new in Malaysia.

“The international salon is different from the conventional cosmetics store in that it provides privacy and six-star special services such as facial treatment and body massage.

“In Europe, Kanebo international salons are located in premier resorts and shopping malls.  

“In Malaysia, we have customised the international salon to meet the needs of not only the high-income group, but that also of the medium-income earners, as we want a wider section of the public to have access to and enjoy Kanebo’s products and services,” he added.

Loh said the first Kanebo international salon in the country was established in May in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur.

The second was recently opened at Gurney Plaza shopping mall in Penang while the third salon will be at Kuala Lumpur's Starhill Gallery before the year-end.

“Next year, we will open four more salons, of which two will be in Kuala Lumpur and one each in Johor Baru and Kuching,” he said.

推动文化艺术活动，首长：砂将建戏剧院

　　（美里21日讯）本州首席部长丕显斯里哈志泰益玛目透露，在第10个大马计划下，州内主要市镇将兴建戏剧院，以推动本州文化艺术活动。

　　他是在出席昨晚主持由美里师训学院举办的第6届首长杯师训学院戏剧比赛闭幕兼颁奖礼后接受媒体访问时，如此表示。

　　较早前，他在致词中指出旧的州立法议会大厦在2008年改建为州戏剧院，作为本州戏剧训练和比赛用途。

　　共有4间师训学院参加此项为期3天的第6届首长杯师训学院戏剧比赛，它们是三马拉汉阿都拉萨师训学院、古晋巴都林当师训学院、民丹莪拉浪师训学院及美里师训学院。

　　三马拉汉阿都拉萨师训学院在这次比赛中夺得冠军、亚军为美里师训学院、古晋巴都林当师训学院和民丹莪拉浪师训学院分别获得安慰奖。

KTMB plans railway line linking Kuching and KK

KOTA KINABALU: A railway line linking Kuching and Kota Kinabalu is among the long-term plans proposed by Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) for the establishment of a trans-Borneo railway service.

KTMB managing director Datuk Mohd Salleh Abdullah said it was also proposing that the sole railway line in Borneo from Tanjung Aru in the city to Tenom in the interior be extended to Lahad Datu and Tawau.

“We have submitted an initial proposal of these plans to the Government,” he said after the opening of the 26th annual KTMB-State Railway of Thailand senior officials meeting here.

He said KTMB, which was working with the Sabah Railway Department, had also come up with various short-term proposals to improve the 134km railway service from the city to Tenom.

Mohd Salleh said the company had so far spent RM10.6mil for a study on the upgrading of the rail line, particularly the safety aspects of the services.

About RM330mil would be spent upgrading the rail tracks as well as for spare parts and trolleys.  

Mohd Salleh said the Sabah Government was seeking a loan or grant of RM58mil from the Federal Government to buy locomotives and carriages, apart from building new workshops.

He said the new trains that the state railway department was likely to acquire would reduce travelling time from the city to Tenom from five hours to just two hours and 45 minutes.

Sarawak developer offers seaside condo in Kuching

AMONG the property showcased at The Star Property & Home Fair 2005 was the Santubong Suites in Kuching which is the only strata titled seaside condominium project in Sarawak.

The project, located 32km from Kuching, comprised 132 units in two 15-storey towers, known as the Santubong Tower and Sejinjang Tower.

Four penthouses, measuring more than 37sq m, are located on the top two levels of each block, he added.

“Every unit has a sea view and ownership is open to residents and foreigners alike,” Santubong Suites Sdn Bhd director Rewi Hamid Bugo said.

The facilities offered at the Santubong Suites include car park, a gymnasium, meeting rooms, a children's playroom and a clubroom.

He said the Santubong Tower, which was about 40% sold, was expected to obtain its certificate of fitness (CF) for occupation in November.

“We plan to retain the Sejin- jang Tower as service apartments,” he said, adding that the Sejinjang Tower was targeted for completion by the end of this year.

Participating in the fair for the first time, Rewi said this was the company’s first mar- keting activity in Peninsular Malaysia.

“We joined the fair to create more awareness about property that are available in Sarawak.

“We received good and positive response from visitors and other exhibitors,” he added.

奥地利一机构将研究和建议，山都望山设缆车可行性

　　（古晋26日讯）本地一家公司正与奥地利一机构合作，展开对山都望山设缆车的可行性调查，并将报告和建议书提呈州政府寻求批准。

　　副首长兼基本设施发展及交通部长拿督巴丁宜丹斯里查布今日在为砂公共工程局高级官员常年会议主持开幕后受询时说，这是一项需要进行详细评估的建议。虽然看来此建议合理，不过州政府要此建议进行经济和持续性、经费及环境等方面的评估和调查。

　　州政府还在研究这建议，他说，缆车这方面而技术需借助他国的专长，例如瑞士和奥地利。并披露有意在山都望山设缆车计划的公司是正发展兰交怡缆车工程的集团。

　　这个集团在展开评估和调查后将会提呈一份完整的建议书予州政府考虑。州政府没作出任何承诺。

　　另一方面，他也披露，州政府已取消，巴达里兴建小型机场的计划，这是因为巴达里和周边地区仅84户居民，建机场不经济实惠，最终将失败。

　　政府已决定将已批准的逾800万令吉拨款，改为扩建巴里奥机场用途。目前扩建计划已交由民航局与工程局深入研究，一旦研究完成随时可施工。

　　与此同时，为了不让巴达里居民失望，他说，州政府已在第9大马计划下向联邦政府申请拨款，从巴达里兴建一条路通往巴里奥。

巴达旺总图书馆料在明年料开放

    （古晋26日讯） 巴达旺市议会管辖区内最大的图书馆预料将在明年初正式开放！

    该市议会主席陈如飞说，该图书馆工程已经完工，而且也已装置水电供应，目前只是面对没有管理员的问题。

    此间座落在7哩哥打圣淘沙镇的巴达旺市议会总图书馆，负责监管该议会属下32间的乡区图书馆。

    据了解，该图书馆占地约3千平方公尺。目前巴达旺市议会购买了总值10万令吉的书籍，总图书馆收藏了3种语文的书籍，即国文、英文和华文。

    “我们已经向政府申请9位管理员，一旦聘请管理员获得批准后，将可以马上投入服务。”

    陈如飞预料，耗资350万令吉的图书馆可在明年初正式开放，同时也将与州图书馆进行连线系统。

Samsung aims for top position in mobile phones

SAMSUNG Malaysia Electronics Sdn Bhd has set a sales target of 1.5 million mobile phones next year in a bid to make Samsung the top selling brand in Malaysia.

Managing director Won Jong-Duk said with over one million units sold to-date this year, the company was on track to achieve the targeted 1.3 million units by the year-end.

“Our market position is number two in terms of quantity but we are first in terms of value because our mobile phones are in a higher price range.  

“We hope that next year, we can reach number one in market share,” he said at the opening of Samsung's customer service plaza in Kuching.

Samsung is reported to command a 25% share of the mobile phone market in Malaysia, and plans to launch 10 new models by December.

The Kuching customer service plaza is the fourth to be set up by Samsung Malaysia after those in Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Johor Baru.  

A fifth plaza will be opened in Kuantan at the end of next month.

Won said Sarawak was an important market for Samsung.

“The reason we set up a customer service plaza in Kuching is to have a strategic position to further develop our east Malaysian market.

“It will give confidence to our dealers and customers in Sarawak, and help increase our market share here,” he said.

He pointed out that the service plaza would also serve the Sabah market for the time being.

Meanwhile, Samsung senior manager of customer satisfaction Law Ah Tiong said the service plaza was a one-stop solution centre where customers could not only get their products serviced and repaired but also obtain information about products and promotional activities.

He also said Samsung would conduct a “Free Service Campaign” from Oct 10 to 16 at the service plaza.  

During the campaign, customers can get free servicing or repairs for their products whose warranty has expired, subject to terms and conditions.
