Consumers to benefit from greater competition in 4G space

Written by Daniel Khoo

http://www.theedgemalaysia.com/h ... on-in-4g-space.html

KUALA LUMPUR: Competition among wireless Internet service providers in Malaysia is set to intensify, especially with the entry of YTL Communications Sdn Bhd and its offering of YES 4G Internet services, but consumers will benefit from greater product offerings and lower prices.

YTL Communications, a subsidiary of YTL Power International Bhd, launched its YES 4G mobile Internet service with voice last Friday.

The 4G technology, which is three to four times the speed of 3G, will further spur innovation in the internet space especially among wireless Internet service providers according to Edzard Overbeek, the Asia Pacific and Japan president of Cisco Systems Inc, the technology provider to YTL’s YES.

“For already established content and Internet service providers (like Astro and TM), competition will definitely intensify in this space and there will be some pressure for those companies. But these are very solid organisations as well and the way they will respond is that they will find new services,” Overbeek tells The Edge Financial Daily.

“They will find new ways to attract new customers and they will find new ways to outcompete some of the entrants that are entering the game. But in the bigger picture, this will bring the industry to a higher level because as competition intensifies, people will get more creative,” he added.

Anne Abraham, Cisco System Sdn Bhd Malaysia managing director, said, the entry of new players would see healthy competition and extend the reach of extra content and Internet offerings across the nation. This would have taken a longer time if the country only depended on one operator.

Overbeek said that with 4G, consumers would be able to access rich media like high-definition (HD) content without wired Internet connections, where rising demand is seen today.

The predecessor to 4G technology, 3G is also able to provide video feeds but not in HD quality because of the latter’s smaller bandwidth. 4G technology via WiMAX is able to provide theoretical bandwidth speeds of up to 100Mbps.

“Applications are moving from traditional static ones to full HD feeds. And that is what’s happening where the Generation Y in Malaysia say they are very comfortable using video.

“If that population gets into both business and now into this new 4G environment, I would say you would want to provide solutions for this new upcoming Generation Y.

Sometimes companies only focus on what happens today, but you need to be prepared for what eventually comes tomorrow,” Overbeek said.

“If they are in their minds attached to all these social media, they are very used to video and all that then you better step up to that because the attractiveness of you as a company will start to decrease if you don’t have those features,” he added.

Overbeek said that despite the increasing mobility of data consumers today, wired and wireless connectivity to the Internet would continue to coexist.

“We don’t think that mobile will be the sole access technology, but fibre will also be an access technology as well. Until today, when governments build cities they are still putting fibre beneath the ground.

“Fibre has an ‘unlimited’ bandwidth and it depends how much light you put in it. Both of them are absolutely vital in this industry,” he explained.

Currently, the only other company offering mobile Internet connectivity with 4G WiMAX is Bursa Malaysia-listed Green Packet Bhd, which started out as a small outfit and subsequently grew.

Green Packet, which is still loss-making, said it expects to be profitable by 1QFY2011 ending Dec 31.

The company last week announced that its net loss shrank by more than half to RM13.7 million against RM31.8 million in the previous corresponding period. Revenues improved to RM100.9 million from RM63 million in 3QFY2009. Basic loss per share was at 2.1 sen from a loss of eight sen per share.

The company which had said that it “welcomes” competition from newcomer YTL Power into the industry, stressed that it offers a differentiated product offering from YTL. This would still enable it to compete healthily in the expanded industry, it added.

Green Packet has also focused its product expansion overseas in emerging markets to counter rising competition at home.

However, technology analysts said they do not discount steep competition in future, which will eventually lead to a decline in profitability for WiMAX.

Analysts said that the entry of “heavyweight” YTL would heat up the competition which would be good for consumers. They will eventually benefit in terms of lower prices and enhanced product offerings.

YTL hoping Malaysians will say YES to new converged 4G mobile Internet service

The latest 4G service in Malaysia, Yes by YTL Communications, is hoping to entice Malaysians with a pay-as-you-go converged 4G mobile Internet service that includes data, voice and SMS, and doesn´t come with a contract or data throttling in place.

Yes will be based on the utility model, where consumers will pay just for what they use, like water or electricity, said Tan Sri Francis Yeoh, Executive Chairman of YTL Communciations.

Consumers will simply pay 9 sen for either every 3MB of data or for every one minute of calls or for each SMS. According to YTL Communications, the data speeds will be three to five times faster than regular 3G speeds.

"Every Yes account comes with high speed Internet access and a mobile phone number, making the convergence of data and voice seamless. Our subscribers will not only have high speed mobile data access but will also enjoy voice, online chat and SMS services," he said.

Consumers will have to buy credit to use the services but there is no expiration date for the credit. Users will only have to reload when they run out of credit.

Additionally, instead of enforcing a data cap or reducing speeds for heavy data users, Yes will also offer rebates to users who consume at high amounts of data. There´s a RM9 rebate for 2.5GB of data usage, a RM23 rebate for 3GB of data usage and for 4GB of data usage or more, Yes is offering a 30 percent rebate for every GB used.

Besides the service, YTL Communications and Samsung also announced the introduction of a 4G mobile phone called Yes Buzz. The SIM-less phone that has a keypad and slide-out keyboard can also be used as a modem for your laptop and all contact details are synchronised with the 4G network. It is expected to be available in December 2010 and priced at RM499.

Other Yes 4G devices include the Yes Huddle, a 4G mobile wireless router that can connect up to five devices simultaneously, Yes Go, a 4G USB dongle and Yes Zoom, a 4G WiFi router designed for home and office use.

The Yes Go 4G dongle is available for RM99 and includes the device, RM100 worth of Yes credit and access to Yes Life and Yes Mail.

Meanwhile, the Yes Huddle 4G mobile hotspot is available for RM399 for the device only. Alternatively, a package that includes RM1,200 of Yes credit, Yes Life and Yes Mail is available for RM1,199.

However, like the Yes Buzz phone, the Yes Zoom 4G gateway is also expected to be available in December.

Besides the 4G devices, data and voice services, Yes will also offer Yes Life, a unified communications application that turns any Internet device into a phone.

Yes Life can be accessed via phone or computer and synchronises your contacts into one address book anywhere you sign in. It also synchronises your Yes email account and can be used for instant messaging.

The application also enables you to make voice calls and SMS, as well as video calls at local Malaysian rates.

And starting next month, the new release of Yes Life will be able to support six-way audio calls and four-way video calls.

YTL Comms’ YES 4G gets a big ‘Aye’ to widen services nationwide

Yeoh says the number of pre-registered 'Yes' subscribers had exceeded the group's expectations by three times

The Malaysian Reserve, November 22, 2010

By Siti Radziah Hamzah

YTL Communications Sdn Bhd expects to increase its Yes 4G Internet service with voice coverage in Peninsular Malaysia by another 15% to 80% by the end of next year, said its executive chairman Tan Sri Francis Yeoh.

To date, YTL Communications has a coverage of 65% and some RM2.5 billion in the Yes 4G infrastructure.

“We will extend it to Sabah and Sarawak at the right time,” he told a media conference before the launch of the service by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin last Friday.

The official launch was also attended by the Minister of Information, Communication and Culture, Datuk Seri Utama Dr Rais Yatim.

It was the biggest single launch with 1,500 base stations nationwide and Yes will be increased to another 1,000 base stations to be deployed next year.

Offering the industry’s lowest rates - up to three times lower than current prepaid mobile internet and voice packages - Yes does away with separate, siloed plans with voice, mobile internet and mobile broadband.

Yes subscribers get an integrated plan, namely pay-as-you-go at just nine sen for 3MB of data and one minute of calls or one SMS.

Yes also offers up to 30% rebate to power users who consume high amounts of data, which effectively reduce the rates to as low as two sen per MB or RM20 per GB.

Asked on pre-registered subscribers for the service, Yeoh declined to give a specific target. He said the numbers were healthy and the response to the pre-registration had exceeded the group’s expectations by three times.

At the launch, YTL Communications and Samsung also introduced the world’s first all 4G mobile phone called the “Yes Buzz”.

YTL Communications has also successfully interconnected its network with other mobile phone service providers in the country beginning last Friday.

Yeoh said the company was keen to cooperate with China and the rest of Asia’s telecommunication service providers to provide the 4G services.

YTL Communications chief executive officer Wing K Lee said “Yes ID” comes with the 4G internet with a 018 mobile number that enables connectivity via multiple devices. He also said that the internet users with “Yes Network” would enjoy speeds up to five times faster than 3G.

YTL: No, YES won't spark price war
http://www.btimes.com.my/Current ... /Article/index_html

YTL Communications Sdn Bhd, a unit of YTL Power International Bhd (6742), does not think its latest 4G (fourth generation) mobile Internet service with voice will spark any price war in the market because it believes its service is a completely new offering.

"There is no comparison because we're the only one providing a total convergence of services - all in one plan," said Tan Sri Francis Yeoh, managing director of YTL Corp Bhd and executive chairman of YTL Comms.

Speaking to reporters prior to the launch of its 4G mobile Internet service, "YES", yesterday, Yeoh is confident that the new service will build a "blue-ocean of people who've never experienced such service".

The company claims that its offering is the cheapest in the industry - at just 9 sen for three megabytes (MB) of data, a one-minute voice call or one SMS.

Calling it a "pay-as-you-go" service, which works like a prepaid service, YTL Comms' chief executive Wing Lee said YES would provide consumers the flexibility and freedom to choose how they want to spend their money.
But unlike other prepaid services, one's credits would never expire.

Attractive rebates of up to 30 per cent are also given to customers who use more than four gigabytes (GB) of data, which can effectively reduce the rate to as low as 2 sen per MB or RM20 per GB.

"For the same amount that is currently paid for a voice-only service, YES provides everyone with access to the Internet too ... (It's) a utility model - just pay for what you use, like water or electricity," said Yeoh.

Every YES account comes with a user ID and high-speed Internet access, with a telephone number that works across all devices.

"Our subscribers will not only have high speed mobile data access but will also enjoy voice, online chat and SMS services that can be accessed from anywhere in the world through the Internet," said Yeoh.

Malaysians travelling abroad can also call home through YES at local rates without having to worry about roaming charges.

The YES network currently covers 65 per cent of the populated areas in Peninsular Malaysia. YTL aims to increase this to 80 per cent by the end of next year.

"We have 1,500 base stations. We plan to add another 1,000 next year," said Yeoh.

However, the company was reluctant to commit on any specific figure when asked on the minimum speed of the service.

"Because of various factors, it's hard to guarantee on speed. If it's super crowded, it will (still) degrade ... but we will stand behind our promise to deliver three to five times faster the speed you currently have on 3G," said Wing.

He also gave the assurance that he has a team of people monitoring the stations and would allocate extra capacity when necessary.

The company's pre-registration campaign started early this month and the take-up rate has exceeded initial forecasts by threefold.

"We're talking about tens of thousands here," said Yeoh.

At the launch later, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said he was confident YES would help increase broadband penetration from 54 to 95 per cent of the population by 2020.

YES was unveiled together with a range of 4G devices - a slim 4G USB dongle for mobile connectivity, a wifi router for home or office, and a "hotspot" mobile router that can connect up to five devices to its 4G network simultaneously.

A "world's first all-4G mobile phone" by Samsung was also introduced.

Guests were given a live demonstration of the new 4G service when Muhyiddin chatted with two Malaysian students in London through a video call via YES.
